Durham, USA — June 27, 2006 – Funcom is proud to announce that Anarchy Online celebrates its 5th anniversary today! To mark this considerable milestone Funcom will be hosting numerous in-game events and activities this coming weekend. In addition Funcom will give away all the released Anarchy Online expansion packs for free! This means that all past and present players of Anarchy Online, including everyone who has ever registered for the game, can get to experience all the exciting expansion packs without any costs other than the monthly fee!*

“We are extremely proud of all we have learned and achieved with Anarchy Online, and even today the game keeps on attracting new gamers in their hundreds of thousands,” said Trond Arne Aas, CEO of Funcom. “New doesn’t equate to better, and the continued success of the free and ultimate sci-fi MMORPG is a testament to how an online game can be honed and improved on an ongoing basis. As we look into the sixth year of Anarchy Online and beyond, we are continuously dedicated to keep on improving the game.”

    Anarchy Online timeline:

Anarchy Online (2001) – With the world’s first science fiction MMORPG Funcom introduced MMO innovations like the mission system, the Auto-Content Generation system, instancing, drag and drop chat interface and numerous other technical improvements which have been widely copied. Shortly after launch Funcom introduced the free seven day trial and digital downloads into the MMO scene. Anarchy Online won “Best MMO of the year 2001” in PC gamer US.

Anarchy Online Special Edition (2002) - The special edition of Anarchy Online included a brand new player experience and an updated and improved game client. With a focus on stability and a smooth introduction into the game, AO had turned into a MMO powerhouse.

Anarchy Online - Notum Wars (2002) - For the first time in a MMO Funcom introduced land control areas, organization vs. organization PvP and voice commands, and Notum Wars meant another great step forward for the exciting PvP action found in the game. It won the “Expansion pack of the year” in Computer Gaming World.

Anarchy Online – Shadowlands (2003) - The massive Shadowlands expansion pack was widely heralded as a benchmark for MMO expansions, and the game won numerous awards and netted an 88% review score average. Introducing massive amounts of new content, new playfields and two new professions, the expansion pack opened up a new universe for the AO players. Shadowlands won ‘Expansion pack of the year’ at IGN.

Anarchy Online – Alien Invasion (2004) - The Alien Invasion expansion pack meant an exciting new chapter for the ongoing storyline in Anarchy as the planet of Rubi-Ka was invaded by a ferocious alien race. With additions like player-made cities and guild based content on demand attacks, the expansion pack took AO yet another step forward. Alien Invasion was the first game to be available in digital retail on launch day.

Anarchy Online – Classic for free (2004) - Anarchy Online became the first major MMO to switch to no subscription fees as the classic version of the game became free in November 2004. In the spring of 2005 Funcom and Massive Incorporated introduced, for the first time in a game, dynamic in-game advertising billboards allowing Funcom to further experiment with exciting new business models and free gameplay.

Anarchy Online – Lost Eden (2006) - In Q4 2006 Funcom will launch Lost Eden, the latest addition to the ongoing Anarchy Online saga. Introducing massive orbital battle-stations, new vehicles, battle Mechs, advanced research opportunities, new PvP approaches on Rubi-Ka and access to vast alien motherships is but a few of the exciting new things the players of Anarchy Online can look forward to.

  • Morton Byom, Anarchy Online's Game Director gave an update on the progress of AO's expansion Lost Eden.

I bring you good news and ‘not-so-good’ news depending on your point of view. Let’s get the ‘not–so-good’ out of the way first. We have decided to change the release date for Lost Eden. Whilst initially we planned to release early this year we have decided to push it back into later this year. We are not going to give an exact date, that will come later but today I wanted to address why we have decided to do this, because I firmly believe it’s the right decision for the game.

Read the rest of it here

Am I surprised by this announcement? Yeah.. I kind of am. I would think that they'd want to keep AO content fresh. It's a good game if a bit difficult.

  • Is that a boss in your pocket, or are you glad to see me? (that never gets old... or does it?)
Funcom's Craig Morrison describes the unique "pocket boss" system found in the "Shadowlands" expansion of Anarchy Online. Really, who doesn't want a boss mob they can spawn anywhere?

The new Shadowlands quests grant faction as rewards for their successful completion as well as pattern parts for our unique 'pocket boss' system, so that players can collect the parts to be able to spawn a special boss mob at their own convenience. Spawning and defeating this boss mob grants further faction rewards allowing players to gain Shadowknowledge (exp) and faction at the same time, something they previously had to do separately.

  • Where you online when the anarchy broke out?
RPGVault has posted an entertaining, albeit short interview with Anarchy Online's own Craig Morrison. The interview takes a quick look at what older MMOs have to do to stay competitive. AO is probably one of the best MMOGs that you have never played. I enjoyed it and I'm not a Sci-Fi fanatic. Here is a brief look at what RPGVault had to say, briefly:

"Set almost 30,000 years in the future, Funcom's Anarchy Online takes place in an age when humanity has reached deep into space to find, explore and colonize huge numbers of worlds spanning the length and breadth of the Milky Way. One of these is Rubi-Ka. A small, rather inhospitable planet in a distant sector of the galaxy, it would be little more than just another insignificant dot on a star map were it not for the fact it holds deposits of notum. This material is both rare and essential in nano-technology. As a result, its discovery many thousands of years ago led the enormous Omni-Tek Corporation to begin terraforming and extraction operations. Since that time, the company has established a city, Omni-1, which is Rubi-Ka's capital, its largest population center and the primary focal point for the authorized export trade. "

  • Funcom For Free.
Funcom has announced that Anarchy Online will remain free to play into 2007. Thinking that Funcom was a store for naughty toys, Charlie Sheen rushed to check out the inventory and exclaimed:

" Funcom announces that the free Anarchy Online offer has been a tremendous success and will be extended throughout all of 2006 and into 2007*. It’s the long-term goal for Funcom to make sure that the removal of subscription fees, client costs and the need to have a credit card when registering for Anarchy Online remains a permanent offering. Now, and for the year to come, anyone curious about the heralded qualities of the ultimate sci-fi MMORPG can play without any financial commitments. "

  • "Anarchy Online" Doesn't Just Describe the WoW PvP Servers!

Third in our series of MMOG profiles, we examine the 2001 Sci-Fi blockbuster MMO Anarchy Online this week. AO introduced a slew of revolutionary changes to the genre after a turgid, buggy start; ideas such as instancing and player housing that soon became staple additions to any rising star.

Who said MMORPGs had to have a fantasy backdrop of orcs, elves, gnomes, and magic? When Anarchy Online busted onto the scene in mid-2001 with its massive 50,000 player-per-server approach, the initial enthusiasm in a true Sci-Fi themed MMOG was tempered by a period of crippling bugs and technical glitches. Funcom was quick to make good on its first MMO, and by the time Dark Age of Camelot was released in November 2001, AO was releasing its first expansion ("Notum Wars") to compliment a polished, unique, and fun-to-play package.

AO's differences aren't purely thematic or technical. When I first logged onto AO and was muddling through the fairly-steep learning curve of a combat and advancement system (steep, despite a brutal assault by popup tips), I realized I was being followed by a player character. Being fairly used to other MMOGs, where newbie zones are sort of a terrorist playground, I didn't pay much attention at first. When I turned around, I realized this player, "Greeter Mitzuharu" was trying desperately to get my attention. Wait a sec..."Greeter"? This was an actual, true-to-life person, welcoming me to the game, and asking me if I had any questions. I was almost too surprised to reply!

Far from eulogizing games like AO or boxing them up as "past their prime", we honor them as "going concerns" in the only genre for whom constant improvement is a way of life for the developers. MMOGs are truly gamers' games.

  • The Ad Driven Model: the WTG for Elderly MMOGs?
Gamer God weighs in on Anarchy Online's recent announcement that the 4-year old MMOG will now be cost-free to gamers worldwide. SOE executives reportedly had a good belly laugh at the announcement, as they continue to reap steady, substantive profits from comparatively ancient 6-year-old EQLive subscriptions.

" Funcom announced that the advertisements will now expand to something that resembles a 15 second commercial spot on television. We will have streaming audio and video in the game as well as the billboards in exchange for a free client, which is a step in the direction of a game supported entirely by advertisements.

Will this cause a trend in the MMOG industry toward games offering free play at the long end of their shelf life to keep people playing and money coming in? Will a company attempt a fully free game supported by advertising? Should someone try this? "
