World of Warcraft + Star Legends: The Blackstar Chronicles News

  • Sony haXX0rs WoW.
SecurityFocus is reporting that the Sony BMG content protection software is making it possible for people to hack World of Warcraft and not get caught.

" World of Warcraft hackers have confirmed that the hiding capabilities of Sony BMG's content protection software can make tools made for cheating in the online world impossible to detect. The software--deemed a "rootkit" by many security experts--is shipped with tens of thousands of the record company's music titles.
Blizzard Entertainment, the maker of World of Warcraft, has created a controversial program that detects cheaters by scanning the processes that are running at the time the game is played. Called the Warden, the anti-cheating program cannot detect any files that are hidden with Sony BMG's content protection, which only requires that the hacker add the prefix "$sys$" to file names."

  • Wow! A free day of WoW.
Blizzard announced via their forums that they have given all World of Warcraft subscribers a free day of service.

" There were a variety of issues with the authentication server yesterday and today that caused players to have issues logging in to the game and forums. Several realms came down for unscheduled maintenance yesterday to resolve a few continent crashes. The extended maintenance today also caused a great deal of inconvenience to many. As a result, we are giving all accounts a 24-hour credit on their subscription. This credit should show up on your account by the end of the week.

As of this post, things are back to normal, but we will continue to closely monitor the realms and be prepared to take action should any other issues arise. We regret that the game was unavailable for a number of players both before and after the regularly scheduled maintenance period, and we would like to thank you all for your patience during this time.
    "

  • The not-so-secret secrets.
GamingGuides.com has posted a lengthy article titled, "Secrets of Massively Multiplayer Farming". I'm not sure these were secrets to anyone who has played World of Warcraft, but the article was an interesting read.

    "
In the past several months, I’ve become friendly with a number of the professional farmers on my server. I had no special motive in doing so; I certainly didn’t befriend them so that I could study them. Nonetheless, during the course of our teaming and chatting together, I gained glimpses into their lifestyles and learned things that I’ve found to be interesting and that I would like to share. The odds are that if you have access to the venue where this document is being published, you’ll find them interesting too. "

  • The new patch is here, and with it the moans and cries of 4 million players.
The new World of Warcraft Patch is out and about, weighing in at a mere 252 MB and calling itself version 1.8. Most notable of the many changes are the revamped Silithus zone for 60+ players, the Four Dragons outdoor raid zone and the talent revamp for druids. We asked Jet Li if he had ever met the Four Dragons, or even stayed at a four seasons, but he abruptly chopped us in the windpipe and mumbled:

" The arid sands of Silithus are shifting. Something is awakening beyond the wall to the south... Aid the Druids of the Cenarion Circle as they delve into the mysteries of the desert. Seek answers behind the Twilight Hammer's presence. Discover more about the alien creatures known as the Silithid as you explore their hives. Many new endeavors await the high-level adventurer! "

  • "We got spirit, yes we do... we got spirit, we'll gank you!"
The "spirit" of World of Warcraft PvP is the topic of this Op/Ed piece. If you've ever wanted to know more about how player vs. player action works in the worlds most popular first-person MMO, and get a tour of PvP efforts in MMOs to date, take a looksee.

" In conclusion, is the World of Warcraft PvP system perfect? No, there are plenty of loop holes to exploit. Is the game fun? Yes, like any other online game you get out what you put in. If you are disappointed in the Battlegrounds, try going to an area and starting trouble, create your own fights, or join a guild that randomly PvPs all the time. I hope we see more improvements from Blizzard in the future with respect to rankings and Battleground availability. "

  • Not one, not two, not three, but FOUR DRAGONS.
The next World of Warcraft Patch will include an outdoor raid zone that features four dragons. They're green. They're mean. They'll make you scream.

"There is a disturbance at the Great Trees. A new threat menaces these
secluded areas found in Ashenvale, Duskwood, Feralas, and Hinterlands.
Four great guardians of the Green Dragonflight have arrived from the
Dream, but these once-proud protectors now seek only destruction and
death. Take arms with your fellows and march to these hidden groves --
only you can defend Azeroth from the corruption they bring."

  • Patch Notes - Go Druids.
Blizzard has put the 1.8 patch for World of Warcraft live on their public Test Server. This is your opportunity to check it out first-hand and then rush to the official forums to complain and moan about it. Druids get a huge revamp that is sure to have 50% of the community screaming that they need a nerf and the other 50% screaming that they need to get buffed. Hey, at least druids can shapeshift into a giant chicken now. I await the KFC instance where they are dipped in a secret recipe of spices and fried for the rest of the raid.

" The test realm patch notes only apply to features that exist on the public test realms. We provide these patch notes to players who wish to know what features and changes exist in the test environment in order to more effectively test these features. "
