  • You Can Walk the Walk...But Can You Talk the Talk?

When it comes to games, Dungeons & Dragons is arguably one of the more jargon-loaded. It's time to demystify some of those terms...at least the ones that apply to Dungeons & Dragons Online (DDO).

“Give me a DC25 UMD check.”

    “Make an opposed grapple check.”

I asked Zed, one of DDO @ Ten Ton Hammer’s resident D&D aficionados, for some examples of D&D jargon. Those were the examples he gave me. My response was a slack-jawed, “Huh?”

I learned that “Give me a DC25 UMD check” is something a dungeon master might say to ask a player to make a Use Magic Device roll versus a Difficulty Class of 25. (I don’t know about you, but I’m still saying, “Huh?”) An “opposed grapple check” is, according to Zed, “A combat option. Essentially a creature/player is attempting to grapple and pin another creature. Opposed checks are made. Each character/creature has a basic grapple score (BAB + Str +Other) and they add that to a d20.”

Yeah, that makes sense. (I think.)

Our handy reference at Ten Ton Hammer's Dungeons & Dragons Online: Stormreach community site will have you talking like a DDO pro!

  • Will unsupervised ankle-biters make it into your MMOG?

Will an Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) rating of "Mature" help keep kids out of Lord of the Rings Online and other MMOGs? And, perhaps more to the point, should it?

I’ve found that gamers come in all varieties, and age has nothing to do with maturity. I’d much rather deal with 10 pre-teen kids who accidentally KS my giant bats in the newbie zone than one 23-year-old griefer who repeatedly trains my group for kicks. I’ve grouped with very young gamers who play with skill and wisdom. Then again, I’ve grouped with 20-something gamers whose antics could’ve easily landed them a spot on MTV’s Jackass.

  • Wasn't Oni the mean boss punched out in that Johnny Cash song?

Kinda, though that boss (and song) were dubbed "Oney" - that Oney was a jerk, and this Oni kicks ass! This strategy highlight was designed by Oni, a player with extensive experience. He shares with us one of his prefered monk builds along with suggestions for equipment and attributes.

Use Orison of Healing as your primary healing spell, supplimented by Dwayna's Kiss and Healing Seed. Save Heal Other for the times when an ally is losing health quickly, and Heal Party for multiple team mates. Between Mend Ailment and Holy Veil, you can strip any hex or condition.

  • The masses have spoken and they're horked off about the changes to Star Wars Galaxies. It wasn't a minor change. It was a HUGE change. John Smedley, President of the Sony Online division gives his explanation on what is going on.

    Why?

Many of you ask "Why did you have to make such a sweeping change rather than just fixing the things that were wrong?" - well, to put it bluntly - everyone had different ideas of what we needed to fix. Trying to balance 34 professions, and add compelling content to make everyone happy proved to be a very large challenge. Many design decisions made early on in the game's creation were boxing the team in to the point that we were never going to be able to really make this game rise to the level it needs to as both a great experience AND as a business. We have consistently kept the SWG team as one of the largest teams within SOE (around 70 people). Even with a team that size getting new content done along with maintaining the live game, along with developing new systems for SWG just proved to be tougher than it should have been. We've got a lot of experience doing MMO's, and SWG has always proven to be the game that was the toughest for us to make changes to. So, along with our partners at LucasArts we did a very lengthy look at just what the fundamental issues with SWG were. We spoke to many of you, read the forums and conducted numerous focus group tests with both existing players, people who have played MMO's before (but not SWG) and people that haven't ever tried MMO's before.

So there you go. You'll have to read the entire post to get the entire story.

  • What happens when you get so big that your servers become a muck of stinky mud where nobody has a good connection and it's a miserable mess? Well you open new servers and you say "Ok I'll let you move!". This is what Blizzard is doing.

Select Character Transfers to New Realm! - Eyonix on 1/26/06
We will be opening character transfers for the 8 realms listed below tomorrow, Thursday, January 26 at 3:00 AM. Characters on these realms will be able to transfer to a new PvP realm, Mug'thol. This round of transfers will be open Monday through Friday from 3:00 AM to 3:00 PM PST until Wednesday, February 1 at 3:00 PM PST. Please be aware that until the transfer window is closed, standard character creation will be unavailable for Mug'thol.

    Archimonde
    Mannoroth
    Warsong
    Bleeding Hollow
    Skullcrusher
    Azgalor
    Burning Blade
    Burning Legion

Character transfers are available Monday thru Friday from 3AM to 3PM.

Interesting to see Skullcrusher back on the list. Our guild of over one-hundred just moved from there. I wonder if this is going to help actually. The room left after the mass vacate just fills up faster than you can push sand into an ant hole. Are there any permanent solutions? Let me know!

  • Batwing crunchies? Um...

We, like you, don't put much thought into the tasty delicacies our characters devour after a tough fight. Nevermind that (arguably) the best dish in World of Warcraft contains more than a snort o' "goblin rocket fuel." And no, Booty Bay revelers, we're not talking about the "volatile rum" they serve down there.

But for those of you that want an inside look at the horrors of the World of Warcraft "Cooking" profession, we offer a new guide that Upton Sinclair would be proud of.

If you can stomach it, check out our Cooking Guide. You've been warned!

(No mechanical war-chickens were harmed in the creation of this guide.)

  • Jump start your WoW secondary skills.

Maybe you thought the "Cooking" and "Fishing" professions in World of Warcraft are gimp, too complex, too time-consuming, too boring, or too expensive to get into. Not so. At least, not anymore.

We have a couple secrets to share with you, secrets that will catapult your skills from 1 to 150 in both the Cooking and Fishing professions for a handful of silver, and in less time than it takes to watch another late-night "B" movie. It's not an exploit, it won't get you banned. It's just a taste of the old-school massively-multiplayer "grind smarter, not harder" approach.

Two hours, no gold, no auction house transactions, 300 skill points.

Interested? Check out Ten Ton Hammer's Two Hours to 150: Cooking & Fishing guide on our World of Warcraft Community Site.
