  • DDO Artwork Welcomed!
Maya, our Dungeons & Dragons Online: Stormreach Community Manager, announces a new feature designed to bring DDO fan art into the limelight:

"This is a newly planned feature to showcase artwork and screenshots of DDO or DnD submitted by community members. I will regularly select new pieces to be featured. Each time a new piece is selected, there will be a newspost with descriptions of the picture and a mention of the artist/photographer. In addition to this, a picture block on the right-margin for the site will display a thumbnail which would link to the full picture.

If you want to get more exposure, this is a good way to go about it... everyone visiting will see it!"

Check out the announcement in the TTH DDO forums for more details on how to participate!

  • Foolish Biomek, You Shall Not Ensconce My Pinto in Flames!
Auto Assault begins its series of beta diaries: "Transmissions from the Central Wasteland." Real stories from real people just like you and me, except that they're driving around trying to blow each other up.

"Don't you listen to those that talk about the "lost technology" of the Old World , young Mutant. We Shamans know that the only tech that's lost is what we haven't gone out and dug out of the wastelands yet. No, we won't be needing a shovel. I'll show you how to get what you need to fix this heap with just a Vindicator, some fancy driving, and an unwitting pack o' Scavs. Hop in!"

  • New Deskpaper from Guild Wars
We call it "Deskpaper" around here, because it goes on your desktop, of course, silly mortal. Featured deskpaper this week is a smear of light. But not just any smear of light...

"The wallpaper image for this week offers one of several early concept images of the Hall of Heroes."

  • DDO Dev Diary Discovered.
The official Dungeons and Dragons Online site has posted a developer's diary featuring Zyrca. The diary is titled, 'Things I've Seen That Made Me Smile'. Strangely absent from the list was coming to work without pants on. That's always a real hoot around here:

"I'm Zyrca, I've been here at Turbine a couple of years now. When I got here, I started out working on the live team on Asheron's Call. If you played Asheron's Call, you may remember me from such things as the "Violet Ball" and for setting up the code that would set my monitor on fire should a 100% crafting interaction fail. Now I'm a game systems engineer helping build Dungeons & Dragons Online. Today, I want to share some of the things I've seen and heard while working on DDO that brought a smile to my lips."

  • The Ad Driven Model: the WTG for Elderly MMOGs?
Gamer God weighs in on Anarchy Online's recent announcement that the 4-year old MMOG will now be cost-free to gamers worldwide. SOE executives reportedly had a good belly laugh at the announcement, as they continue to reap steady, substantive profits from comparatively ancient 6-year-old EQLive subscriptions.

" Funcom announced that the advertisements will now expand to something that resembles a 15 second commercial spot on television. We will have streaming audio and video in the game as well as the billboards in exchange for a free client, which is a step in the direction of a game supported entirely by advertisements.

Will this cause a trend in the MMOG industry toward games offering free play at the long end of their shelf life to keep people playing and money coming in? Will a company attempt a fully free game supported by advertising? Should someone try this? "

  • Clan Bro Makes an Impact in Guild Wars
NC Soft chose the European-based Clan Brotherhood as its Guild of the Week this week. Twitch gamers might recognize the title from other online tactical and shooter titles, and yes, it's the same guys. It's rumored that Clan Bro once challenged Clan Ya-Ya Sisterhood to a Team Arena, but Ya-Ya backed out for reasons that remain a secret.

"Clan Brotherhood members follow four guiding principles and rules. Firstly, all members must work to foster harmony and an enjoyable atmosphere at all times. Secondly, it is important to seek out fun in the game; the guild believes that losing a closely fought match against a difficult opponent yields more enjoyment than seeking to win at all costs. Thirdly, any form of cheating or exploiting is strictly prohibited. Finally, members are expected to act in a mature and respectful way at all times. Along with these principles, the guild feels that experience playing together as a team is more valuable than the skill of any individual member.
The Bro guild is active in the European PvP community, where they participate in the Erste deutsche Guild Wars Liga and will be fielding a team for the Electronic Sports League's 8on8 Guild-versus-Guild Opening Cup. While many Bro members seek competitive gameplay in Guild Wars, others prefer to pursue cooperative play, completing missions and quests, and exploring the world of Tyria. Members do not trade internally; instead they "gift" appropriate items freely, knowing the favor will be returned at a later date."

  • Super Hero Paparazzi.
Boomtown has posted some new City of Heroes screenshots showing off the new powers. Super powers can be so bland. It's great that they made them look fancier:

"The upcoming fifth, free City of Heroes expansion titled Issue 5: Forest of Dread is hotly debated amongst the CoH gamers, since it's going to be the largest collective nerf (ie. downgrading) of powers ever seen in the history of the game. However, there is also good news: The expansion will add new power sets for blasters, controllers and defenders such as sonic blast and trick arrow."

  • I have super powers, and I've decided to wear tights.
IGN has posted a hands-on preview of City of Villains. Dr. Evil had this to say about the new City game:

"One of the nice things about this latest incarnation of character creation are the amount of sliders available to players. Now heads can be adjusted in quite a few ways along with the body. Wide or narrow shoulders, hips, waist, can make two villains look pretty different along with the sallow or bulky chest, long or short legs, and basic physique. Villains can also be about a foot taller than heroes at this point as well ranging up to 8' for some gargantuan sized baddies. Even better is that all of these slides can be used now within the costume creator so it's easy to see immediately what the costume will look like on a different sized body."

  • VW Beetles with Buzzsaws.
Eurogamer has posted an Auto Assault interview featuring Scott "Scorch" Brown, the president of NetDevil. Unsure if Mad Max would get reception on his cell phone the Cingular folks sent out this message:

"We have built Auto Assault from the ground up to allow for solo and group play. That being said there are many aspects of Auto Assault that can be more fun with a group of players, or a convoy as we refer to it. While in a convoy, for example, the killing spree bonus is convoy-wide so any convoy member can keep this bonus high. People are already trading items for crafting and vehicle customisation in towns as well. We also have a complete clan system allowing players to compete as a clan and win fame through the arena system."
