With over four million units of the original game (Guild Wars: Prophecies) sold in stores, there's no denying the popularity of this free-to-play game.

Set in a medieval fantasy world, Guild Wars allows players to choose from ten different total professions. In the original release of the game, players could choose from six of these professions, with the Nightfall and Factions expansions adding two more professions each. While there is a player versus environment (PvE) portion of the game, most players play Guild Wars to engage in player versus player combat (PvP). With a level cap of only 20 levels, players can quickly become a top-tiered character in PvE, yet the main drive to hit level 20 is to earn skills that can be used in the PvP arena.

Finally, the PvP competitions are separated into seven different areas of competition, each with its own nuances and goals. Players are urged to continually play Guild Wars because large cash payouts are available to the best players of the game. The money on top of the fun of PvP continues to keep Guild Wars an incredibly popular game.

  • Three times better than Toe of the South.

MMORPG has a new preview of the upcoming Guild Wars expansion, Eye of the North.

Publisher NCSoft holds a meeting session each year at E3, moving media through all the games they are showing in twenty minute sessions. Not a whole lot of time for developers to show a game preview as well as answer questions. This year was no different. Jeff Strain, Co-Founder and Programmer did the presentation while Elijah Miller of Quality Assurance drove the playable preview.

  • Radical changes incoming

Games Radar has posted a preview of the upcoming expansion to Guild Wars. Keep reading to see what they think of Eye of the North.

Whereas Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall were separate, yet linked, chapters where anyone could start off a new character, Eye of the North is designed solely for max-level characters. It’s being built as a stepping stone for both the existing community and the GW storyline in the lead up to the all-guns-blazing sequel. It introduces villains and big bad evils, bigging up the Human and Charr races, while introducing the Asura and the Norn (all of whom shall be playable come the advent of the sequel), and giving its famed instanced gameplay an almighty send off.

  • See What GameDaily Has to Say

GameDaily has posted their preview of the upcoming expansion to Guild Wars. See what they think of Nightfall.

Players then step into the sandals of a Sunspear soldier who works to rise up the ranks to gain recognition. Anyone who played previous Guild War games will be able to jump right into Nightfall. In fact, characters can travel across to different campaigns as long as the player owns them. The core game mechanics are identical. Characters can select one primary and secondary profession. They go out into instanced worlds, where the entire landscape is dedicated to the player's party without anyone else intruding, When venturing out, they are only allowing to bring eight skills with them, making this as much a game of strategy as it is role playing. What sets Nightfall apart, other than its story and setting, are the two unique classes and the hero.

  • Make yourself a date with the night

Games Radar has posted their impressions of the upcoming Guild Wars Expansion, Nightfall.

As you may remember, the original plan for the massively multiplayer role-player Guild Wars was that rather than charging a subscription fee, they'd release full-priced expansions every six months for people who wanted further adventures. When Guild Wars Factions took a full year to appear, that plan was presumed to be abandoned. With Nightfall arriving almost six months to the day later, it seemingly hasn't.

  • Boomtown Brings Us an Hands-On Preview of Nightfall

Boomtown has posted their latest look at the upcoming Guild Wars expansion. They had a chance to play Nightfall. Keep reading to find out what they thought...

So here we are again, logging on for God knows which time, this time preparing to get into the next chapter of the saga, Nightfall. The title screen now has a sort of African-Arabian from-the-desert-to-the-seas thing going, and as usual, Jeremy Soule's music fits the mood. It feels like I'm about to date an old flame again, and she's changed ever so subtly, but somehow significantly. The thing is, though, that she's still the same, my Guild Wars. She may now have even more to do, this time focusing on single-player content rather than the multiplayer-fest that is Factions, she may have two new classes, the Dervish and the Paragon, lots of new items, quests, et cetera up her sleeve, but really, folks, she is the same.

  • Guild Wars Nightfall Updated Impressions - Heroes, Quests, and Setting

GameSpot posted some updated impressions for the upcoming expansion to Guild Wars. They had a chance to speak with ArenaNet co-founder Jeff Strain about Nightfall.

The appeal of online games is that they let you have your adventures alongside other players from around the globe. And one of the hallmarks of ArenaNet's online role-playing game Guild Wars is that it has evolved over time, adding new features and gameplay ever since its launch last year. Thanks to excellent gameplay and the fact that there's no subscription fee required to play, Guild Wars has established itself as a hit. ArenaNet claims more than 2 million copies of the game sold to date, and with the release of further chapters, we can expect that number to grow.
