With over four million units of the original game (Guild Wars: Prophecies) sold in stores, there's no denying the popularity of this free-to-play game.

Set in a medieval fantasy world, Guild Wars allows players to choose from ten different total professions. In the original release of the game, players could choose from six of these professions, with the Nightfall and Factions expansions adding two more professions each. While there is a player versus environment (PvE) portion of the game, most players play Guild Wars to engage in player versus player combat (PvP). With a level cap of only 20 levels, players can quickly become a top-tiered character in PvE, yet the main drive to hit level 20 is to earn skills that can be used in the PvP arena.

Finally, the PvP competitions are separated into seven different areas of competition, each with its own nuances and goals. Players are urged to continually play Guild Wars because large cash payouts are available to the best players of the game. The money on top of the fun of PvP continues to keep Guild Wars an incredibly popular game.

  • Wasn't Oni the mean boss punched out in that Johnny Cash song?

Kinda, though that boss (and song) were dubbed "Oney" - that Oney was a jerk, and this Oni kicks ass! This strategy highlight was designed by Oni, a player with extensive experience. He shares with us one of his prefered monk builds along with suggestions for equipment and attributes.

Use Orison of Healing as your primary healing spell, supplimented by Dwayna's Kiss and Healing Seed. Save Heal Other for the times when an ally is losing health quickly, and Heal Party for multiple team mates. Between Mend Ailment and Holy Veil, you can strip any hex or condition.

  • Hot Feets!

Samyel on the TTH Guild Wars site looks at a ranger that does a little bit of everything. Poison, crippling, interrupts, traps and energy management. The only thing this versatile build doesn't do is heavy damage, but really, with such a big bag of tricks, damage is something you can leave to your team mates. Read the details here.

When you engage the enemy, cast Apply Poison and start liberally dishing out arrows. Switch targets depending on who is being the biggest nuisance: Crippling Shot goes on warriors, while Distracting Shot and Savage Shot are excellent for harassing casters. If the fight focuses on one area (say, a Flag Stand or on a flight of stairs) take the time to plant traps under your enemy’s feet.

  • Let the previewing begin! IGN previews this newly announced expansion pack for Guild Wars.

Guild Wars was a great success. And with great success comes great expansions and eventually sequels. ArenaNet, developer of Guild Wars, has done things a bit different from the very beginning and are continuing the trend. Instead of offering the basic expansion pack that most were expecting, they're offering up Guild Wars: Factions, a stand-along (yes along) that allows players to purchase and play the title without needing the original Guild Wars. Those that have the original Guild Wars that purchase Factions can adventure on the new continent. Those that buy Factions first can then go back and experience the original content at a later time. Interesting? We think so.

If you love Guild Wars, you'll love our TTH Guild Wars site!
