Hero's Journey

More on Ten Ton Hammer

Hero's Journey is a fantasy-based 3D MMORPG from the developers of Simutronics, the same folks that delivered the award-winning text-based games Dragon Realms and Gemstone IV. While the developers at Simutronics may not have previously had any experience in 3D realms, they've certainly not used that as an excuse to slow their development. By creating the HeroEngine, the developers at Simutronics are paying for the development of Hero's Journey by selling the engine to other developers.

One of the most unique features behind Hero's Journey is the oft-mentioned quest system (called the "Journey System"). The Journey System is a system that adapts quests and gameplay based on the player's decisions, potentially leading to such things as the evolution of a specific creature as a player's nemesis, as well as reappearing characters and themes. Other notable features include deep character customization and mandatory multi-classing (having two character classes) from the beginning. Like many of Simutronics's other fantasy games, Hero's Journey is set in the world of Elanthia.

In development since 1999, Hero's Journey has been delayed several times in the past few years for various reasons. While many believe that the release of HJ is inevitable since the HeroEngine is already being licensed to so many other developers, it still remains a mystery as to when a solid release date will be scheduled.

    Preview: Hero's Journey & HeroEngine

WarCry has updated thier site today with this look at Hero's Journey and the HeroEngine.

In their live development environment, two World Builders - for example - can be at work on the same part of one area and see what the others does in real time. Thus, one guy can decorate a house in a town, while the other guy places cows in the yard. In some engines, two developers working in a square mile of each other, let alone the same village is enough to make a producer's hair turn a shade more grey. That's not an issue for HeroEngine.

First of all, they assured me that their unique GM system currently has over 50 Game Masters waiting for the chance to get their hands on the technology. This will help so they can get their quests into the game. As pretty as this game is, like any, it will likely be the content that keeps players involved.

The community behind the long-in-development title Hero's Journey is among the most resilient in the industry. And now, yon heroes, there's reason to rejoice. "With five announced licensees (four were announced just last week), the game-builders responsible for some of the best known MUDs in the industry found themselves increasingly in a middleware-maker's role. "Wyr Would You Like to Go Today?"

MMORPG.com has the latest developer journal for Hero's Journey. In this one Jay Miller takes a look at Wyr.

When I think of Wyr, my mind doesn't immediately lock onto the mechanics of the things. I don't think about sockets or customization, buffs or abilities, or how awesome it'll be to walk around guttin' Ukar with a sword that has little chunks of fallen heroes socketed to it. No, when I hear the word Wyr, I get all misty-eyed because I know they came as blood payment for all those poor, unfortunate souls who died during the Sundering.

Y'see, Wyr are far more than just wicked-cool trinkets you carry around with you to make you stronger, faster, and glowier than ever. They’re living history, magically-infused kernels of Elanthia’s past and the embodiment of Elanthia herself. They take on the voice of a planet so riddled with tragic history that you'd be hard pressed to take a single step in any direction without stepping all over the bones of somebody's ancestors. Wyr are the voice of the planet, and they scream bloody murder.

Read the rest of this journal and then head over to the forums and let us know what you think!

Once considered an outsider by the world's great power centers, Quillmore is now the last of the Old Blood cities, and finds itself as the keystone of Elanthia's restorative efforts. The remnant citizenry of hundreds of communities call Quillmore home and look to its ruling House to provide sanctuary in the wake of the Sundering.

Simutronics introduces Lorstra, a deity outside the trinity of Nature, Magic and Gear, whose agenda is reconciliation

Rakshaal are not native to the world of Elanthia. Rather, they come from Eisa, the Plane of Darkness. Before the Sundering, they arrived only as summoned servants of the Arcanum. Accountings describe them as handsome, with solid-colored eyes and leathery skin. However, those that visit now come on their own, and are twisted into monsters in transit. Among the three most familiar types, both the Vaklash and Gorrog possess supernatural powers, and enough intelligence to act as war-animals or independently, while the clever Ilorax are natural leaders that love battle, preferring to lead from the front, not the back.

You can read the rest here.
