Hero's Journey is a fantasy-based 3D MMORPG from the developers of Simutronics, the same folks that delivered the award-winning text-based games
Dragon Realms and
Gemstone IV. While the developers at Simutronics may not have previously had any experience in 3D realms, they've certainly not used that as an excuse to slow their development. By creating the HeroEngine, the developers at Simutronics are paying for the development of Hero's Journey by selling the engine to other developers.
One of the most unique features behind
Hero's Journey is the oft-mentioned quest system (called the "Journey System"). The Journey System is a system that adapts quests and gameplay based on the player's decisions, potentially leading to such things as the evolution of a specific creature as a player's nemesis, as well as reappearing characters and themes. Other notable features include deep character customization and mandatory multi-classing (having two character classes) from the beginning. Like many of Simutronics's other fantasy games, Hero's Journey is set in the world of Elanthia.
In development since 1999,
Hero's Journey has been delayed several times in the past few years for various reasons. While many believe that the release of HJ is inevitable since the HeroEngine is already being licensed to so many other developers, it still remains a mystery as to when a solid release date will be scheduled.
