  • His name is Brandon Walker he's the new guy. He's got a new Devlog on the official site.

Since I've started here I've been fortunate enough to work on some cool projects. One of the first was to add flags to the ships. I was excited to add flags because they add some character to the ships AND more importantly they show what the current wind direction is (which is very important when in the middle of a battle). Originally, I thought this was going to be a trivial task that would only have minor implications in the game. I soon discovered this was not the case. Everytime I thought I had the flags working perfectly I discovered I had forgotten something: flags not falling with the masts, main mast flag not matching player nationality, flag scale not appropriate on all ships, etc. Most of the bugs are fixed now, but I'll be doing small tweaks here and there over the next couple of weeks. I also look forward to setting up a content import system that will let the community import new flag patterns into the game. I'm excited to see what people come up with.

  • His name is Andrew Binder and his mission? To Annihilate all coding bugs in existence! This new test lead for Flying Lab Software makes his Developer's Log Debut with .. er... flying colors?

I suppose an introduction is in order. My name is Andrew Binder and I am the test lead here at Flying Lab Software. I have been testing, test-leading, test-managing, games for a little over 12-years now. I cut my QA teeth at Dynamix in Eugene, Oregon (Aces of the Pacific, Red Baron, Trophy Bass, Starsiege, Tribes, etc), took a turn at Tiburon (Madden 00), swung through Microsoft (Zoo Tycoon franchise), and now I have come to hang my tricorn here at FLS. I have likely been a geek and a technophile from the day I opened my eyes and could recognize the beauty that is a blinking LED. My mother humored my need and through her and the rest of my family I got the original Atari PONG, a Magnavox Odyssey, the Atari 2600, a VIC-20, and a 386-DX25 as my first "modern" computer while I was in college. My contributions (via paper routes and other odd jobs) to this mess were a Colecovision, a Vectrex, and my pride-and-joy Apple IIe. I won’t even try to list the various and sundry blinking, building, battery operated, toys that used to lie around our house in various states of dismantlement (I was *that* kid who would get a $100 toy for Christmas, spend one day playing with it, and months taking it apart and then trying to put it back together- usually unsuccessfully. Personality clue – I’ve been in test for 12-years). Now that I am older and “wiser” I try to reserve my destructive tendencies for software, and the odd home repair job (sorry honey...).

He's an entertaining guy. You should read the rest.

  • The best part of playing MMOs are the emotes. Top 3? /rude , /fart, /point... In that order.

Mat's Creating Emotes for PotBS is up.

I've done some number crunching in order to give you an idea of how important emotes can be in our game. Currently we have 240 animations in the game. Of those 240 animations, 90 of them are emotes – and this number will grow as we get closer to launch. While emotes are a great way to help people communicate in the game world, it is interesting to note that once we make an emote animation, ConCo is then able to spread them around and make our NPC’s more lively in the world. If you look closely at the crew members on the ships, you can even see some of the emotes there!

    240.. that's alot! All he needs though is 3. /fart, /rude and /point.

  • Journal #7 deals with cartography in the game Pirates of the Burning Sea.

A Historic Cartographer is the name given to the very few of us in the industry that specializes in the creation of researched maps that represent a specific location at a particular point in time (mine specialization being 15th through 18th centuries). The term "Portolan" is used to identify hand-made maps that are observed as having a specific set of characteristics used by early Cartographers (Cartouche, Scale, Windrose, Rhumblines, and Misc uses of Hand-Created Art in the Map itself). A "Portolan Artist" is someone who follows the same design principles and technique as early Cartographers.

  • The Official Site has a new devlog up. This time it's joramh's Revamping the Ship Guide.

One of my primary responsibilities at FLS is coordinating the introduction of these historical vessels into our game world. This can be a lengthy process when you consider that ships not only require the structure, but placement of the crew, the cannons, the sails, and ensuring damage is displayed accurately. Prior to coming to the Flying Lab team I had a life as a web developer, so naturally the revamped ship guide was a good fit for me to spearhead.

Go take a look at the rest of it. It's pretty interesting.

  • Misha is back with a report on the ups and downs of the Pirates of the Burning Sea Beta Test.

The beta testers know that most of the available missions have changed since the build they have, the navigation zone has changed dramatically, and some of the UI has changed. That leaves them not a huge number of things to test except various PvP lineups. Which they did...

"It was a very good fight, If Mojo had just stayed in range 4 seconds longer on that initial encounter I would have sunk him and I believe I could have taken the other two. It was the constant bombardment of 3 ships rolling in and out that kept me completely on defense. That and I forgot to buy [repair consumables].

You can read the entire log here on the official website.

  • Yar Radio, the official station for Pirates of the Burning Sea has a series going on now about custom content for the game.

Pirates of the Burning Sea is a unique MMO, in that we allow and encourage players to have their very own custom flags, sail patterns and even ships, incorporated into the game world. Many of our fans have already begun work on their creations, and some have even seen their work through our unique peer review program and accepted into the game as a lasting and permanent game play resource. We’ve been pleased to see the response to our User Content program, but it is important to us that everyone has a chance to participate in this exciting opportunity.

With that said, this is what I want. Give me a Rainbow Monkey swinging three semi lucid squirrels while doing the macarena. I shall stand at the bow of my ship, wind blooowing in my hair, proudly sporting my flag.
