The seas are deadly in the year 1720, as control for the Caribbean fluctuates. France, Spain and England all have forces out on the waters and pirates are not making it easy for anyone to make any headway. In Pirates of the Burning Sea, in development by Flying Lab Software, you can choose to join any of the three nations in the battle for the Caribbean, or you may decide to sail under no colors as a pirate.

Combat includes the tactical mastery of ship combat, where you must use cunning moves and defensive strategies to battle others on the water, or the land-based swashbuckling. Choose from three distinct fighting styles to best your opponent and make a name for yourself as a swordsman.

Pirates of the Burning Sea allows you to adjust your character to your playstyle. You are not locked into a set role. You can be the captain of the most feared ship on the sea, or you can be a humble merchant looking to make the most money around. The choice is yours, but be warned...the Caribbean is cruel, and others will be out to make sure you fail.

  • Summer Plans Revealed

John Scott Tynes, Producer of Pirates of the Burning Sea, adds an entry to the dev journal at MMORPG.com.

ConCo, our content creation team, is busy working on missions for ranks 16-30. New missions and characters are going in all the time and it’s great stuff. We recently added the ability for NPCs to react to a player emote, so that if you use “/emote bow” before a noble we can have him acknowledge your action.

Read the entire entry and then let us know what you think in our forums. Stay tuned to Ten Ton Hammer for all the latest news on Pirates of the Burning Sea and all your favorite MMOs.

  • Game Code Updated

Pirates of the Burning Sea developer logs have been updated. You can read about "Get Rid of Lua Day", a mass push by developers to change the game code...

Last Tuesday we celebrated the first official Flying Lab Programmer Holiday, "Get Rid of Lua Day."

Lua is a scripting language that we have been using for the past several years. It has served in a wide variety of ways on the PotBS client, but mostly we have used it for game UI and console commands (like /tell or /toad.)

We've been gradually moving game functionality from Lua into C++ over the past year and a half, but significant chunks of the game were still in Lua, so I took a day out of the schedule for every programmer and we made a single big push to get as much of the lingering Lua out of the game as possible. I would have to call the day a complete success.

  • MMOz Online Gaming Talks With Taylor 'Augustus' Daynes

Lead Designer, Taylor 'Augustus' Daynes answers a few questions about
Flying Lab Software's upcoming Pirate-themed MMORPG.

"Your [NPC] supporting cast is assembled based on your nation and
gender, although gender is an optional element we use only on occasion.
We can also assign a specific character to your cast in response to
player actions, so if you flirt with someone in a tavern during a
mission, we can then assign that character to be your romantic interest.

In general, we use the cast within specific storylines that are often
solo-only, so that your experience is unique. Many other storylines do
not use your cast, so when they turn up you know something really cool
    is going on."

  • In perhaps the funniest piece I've read in a long time, Woodrodius explains why you should chew your steak.

Now locked in the gaze of both my CEO, some attentive restaurant patrons, and the interns, (who were watching an art position open up before their very eyes) Bruce and I rose, and our heroic art director positioned himself to administer his first Heimlich maneuver. The first thrust was unsuccessful. I heaved forward, and felt sickening pressure on my abdomen, pretty much the worst imaginable stimuli one can receive after a large meal. With this initial motion failing to dislodge the tasty globe from gullet, I began to have some genuine concern. Was this it? Was I going to die choking on steak and not making-out to death with supermodels as had been my previous guess? Would Greg be able to tastefully wait two months before he started making jokes about the manner of my demise, whilst validating it as “part of the healing process”? What of my bug list? Would they all go unresolved?

Was this to be the end of Woody?

You have to read the rest of this devlog. Don't eat or drink anything first. My monitor and keyboard are giving me baleful glares as I type this.
