The seas are deadly in the year 1720, as control for the Caribbean fluctuates. France, Spain and England all have forces out on the waters and pirates are not making it easy for anyone to make any headway. In Pirates of the Burning Sea, in development by Flying Lab Software, you can choose to join any of the three nations in the battle for the Caribbean, or you may decide to sail under no colors as a pirate.

Combat includes the tactical mastery of ship combat, where you must use cunning moves and defensive strategies to battle others on the water, or the land-based swashbuckling. Choose from three distinct fighting styles to best your opponent and make a name for yourself as a swordsman.

Pirates of the Burning Sea allows you to adjust your character to your playstyle. You are not locked into a set role. You can be the captain of the most feared ship on the sea, or you can be a humble merchant looking to make the most money around. The choice is yours, but be warned...the Caribbean is cruel, and others will be out to make sure you fail.

  • Staying the Course

Burning Sea Producer John Tynes gets us lubbers ready to hand, reef, and steer as the game begins to emerge from the internal beta mist. Tynes spoke with our very own John "Boomjack" Hoskin about a variety of seaworthy topics in what turned out to be a very entertaining and informative interview.

"Ten Ton Hammer: Pacing is an aspect of most MMOGs that the players take for granted. How would you compare the gameplay pace in Pirates of the Burning Sea to the current crop of MMOGs on the market?

John Tynes: 75% less tedium! We've made travel swift without making it safe. We've turned crafting on its ear by skipping dagger-grinding and going straight to large-scale resource production. We've made combat exciting and involving instead of repetitious and macro-worthy. And we've done it all in a game with real style."

Sadly, our most pressing question went unanswered: how do you sail a wooden ship on a burning sea? Maybe next time. For now, check out the Pirates of the Burning Sea - John Tynes interview right here at Ten Ton Hammer!

  • In addition to telling you about this great developer log, I'd like to remind you that Beta Signups are a go. If you're interested in testing Pirates of the Burning Sea (and you should be) You can sign up here. Now.. for the log!

Introducing Kevin "MasterGuns" Loza, FLS UI Artist
Hi, dev log readers! I’m Kevin Loza one of the new members of the Flying Lab team. Specifically, I'm the artist that is creating the user interface for Pirates of the Burning Sea.

To give you some background on my work, I am trained in both traditional and digital art. My schooling spans sketching, painting, sculpture, and photography. The digital arena started through my own animation at home on the Amiga computer and, later, graphic design classes on the Macintosh. I studied 3D modeling, texturing, and animation, as well.

I love painting particularly on the computer. Recently, I created a digital portrait for a friend. Part of the my passion comes from self expression and pushing the medium.

I, also, work on a high resolution model in my spare time. It’s a personal project that I started to take one character from concept to fully realized 3d animation. First, the concept sketching and various sketches were made. Second phase was digital painting. Third phase is modeling and that’s what I’m doing at the moment. So far, it’s my favorite personal challenge of all my personal studies.

My first job in the games industry working for SEGA, back in the day when the Genesis lived and breathed. I worked as an animator, and during my first game, NHL All-Star Hockey ’95, they promoted me to the position of Lead Animator midway through the project.

    Read more about Kevin here.

  • MOPGL has an interview with Flying Lab's Taylor 'Augustus' Daynes. This lead designer shares info on their upcoming game Pirates of the Burning Sea.

Since ships will be single-player operated, I'm wondering how smart the NPCs are. Will there be any NPC controlled ships?pirates of the burning sea

In addition to a world full of NPC enemies, many of the missions in our game involve NPC allies. One thing we’ve learned from other games, it’s that if you are going to have NPC allies, they’d better be worth something. NPCs that just wander off and get killed, or worse, wander off and get you killed are a recipe for frustration. So we firmly believe that NPCs need to be competent. This is a tricky problem for us though, because unlike other MMOs, where NPCs can pretty much just run straight up to you and auto-attack, our NPCs need to know how to use the wind, how to present their broadside to you in order to attack, and how to stay out of your firing arcs. Brady “Jigmasta” Houck – our AI guru – has worked on our AI over the last year, and I’m happy to report that our NPCs are very smart. Surprisingly smart. They often startle me with actions or tactics that we didn’t program into them. For instance, one NPC in a fast ship planted himself right in front of me, waited for me to come to a stop after colliding with it, and then it boarded me now that I was an easy grappling target. Stuff like that makes your day!

  • You may know him as Rev. He's a developer at Flying Labs. His column at the Stranger made me laugh right out loud.

The booth babe up on stage at E3, the big video-game expo in Los Angeles, finally lost it. The throng of gamers with their cameras snapping pictures of her in a revealing fantasy costume, grabbing from the floor below at the T-shirts she was giving away, was just too much. "Vultures, VULTURES!" she yelled at them. "You're all a bunch of vultures!"

You should absolutely read the rest.

  • It's always interesting to get a Developer's point of view from E3. Is it as crazy for them as it is for us? Absolutely! Read it in the latest Dev Diary to come from Pirates of the Burning Sea.

E3 is a beast. 60,000 sweaty gamers descend on Los Angeles to compete for swag, face time with devs, and the glory of seeing new stuff first. Over in the NVIDIA booth, six of us from Flying Lab -- myself, Rusty, Isildur, Aether, BSharp, and Heidi -- demoed Pirates of the Burning Sea to everyone who walked up, including press and business contacts.

    Get it right here.

  • John Tynes gives us a new milestone update on the official site.

Pirates of the Burning Sea is an ever-growing world. To build it we structure our work in milestones, which are blocks of work six to eight weeks long. Each milestone focuses on specific objectives in development, art, and world-building. As we create the game, we’ll tell you what we’re working on in the current milestone and what we’ve got planned for the next, so you can see all the cool new features that are coming down the pipeline and get an inside look at the creation of a new MMORPG.

  • His name is Brandon Walker he's the new guy. He's got a new Devlog on the official site.

Since I've started here I've been fortunate enough to work on some cool projects. One of the first was to add flags to the ships. I was excited to add flags because they add some character to the ships AND more importantly they show what the current wind direction is (which is very important when in the middle of a battle). Originally, I thought this was going to be a trivial task that would only have minor implications in the game. I soon discovered this was not the case. Everytime I thought I had the flags working perfectly I discovered I had forgotten something: flags not falling with the masts, main mast flag not matching player nationality, flag scale not appropriate on all ships, etc. Most of the bugs are fixed now, but I'll be doing small tweaks here and there over the next couple of weeks. I also look forward to setting up a content import system that will let the community import new flag patterns into the game. I'm excited to see what people come up with.

  • His name is Andrew Binder and his mission? To Annihilate all coding bugs in existence! This new test lead for Flying Lab Software makes his Developer's Log Debut with .. er... flying colors?

I suppose an introduction is in order. My name is Andrew Binder and I am the test lead here at Flying Lab Software. I have been testing, test-leading, test-managing, games for a little over 12-years now. I cut my QA teeth at Dynamix in Eugene, Oregon (Aces of the Pacific, Red Baron, Trophy Bass, Starsiege, Tribes, etc), took a turn at Tiburon (Madden 00), swung through Microsoft (Zoo Tycoon franchise), and now I have come to hang my tricorn here at FLS. I have likely been a geek and a technophile from the day I opened my eyes and could recognize the beauty that is a blinking LED. My mother humored my need and through her and the rest of my family I got the original Atari PONG, a Magnavox Odyssey, the Atari 2600, a VIC-20, and a 386-DX25 as my first "modern" computer while I was in college. My contributions (via paper routes and other odd jobs) to this mess were a Colecovision, a Vectrex, and my pride-and-joy Apple IIe. I won’t even try to list the various and sundry blinking, building, battery operated, toys that used to lie around our house in various states of dismantlement (I was *that* kid who would get a $100 toy for Christmas, spend one day playing with it, and months taking it apart and then trying to put it back together- usually unsuccessfully. Personality clue – I’ve been in test for 12-years). Now that I am older and “wiser” I try to reserve my destructive tendencies for software, and the odd home repair job (sorry honey...).

He's an entertaining guy. You should read the rest.
