For those of you looking for a true blend between an MMOG and a first person shooter, you may have received your wish in the form of the upcoming MMOFPS, Huxley. Developed by Webzen (famous for making the perenially popular MU Online), Huxley takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where human beings have mutated and are divided into two opposing races, Sapiens and Alternative. At the center of the battle for survival is Lunarites, a promising new energy source that both sides seek to obtain. Forced to battle against one another for the continuance of each race, Sapiens and Alternatives are willing to do whatever it takes to wipe out the conflicting race and gain control of the world and its resources.

With this conflict in mind, players choose between one of the two races (Sapiens or Alternatives) and create a customizable character avatar to use in the game. Once a character has been created, they can then go into the world and interact with their compatriots at certain "social hubs" that are typically centralized cities of the race in question. In these cities, players choose to group with characters and enter a PvE or PvP arena.

While the game may sound like an FPS, there are dozens of elements that make it an MMOG. These features include levels (where the cap will be set at 50), skills, unique armors, and various rarities of weapons. Quests and licenses are also available, and you can shop, trade, join a clan, and group together with your friends. Players can also hire NPCs to join in a group and help fight missions.

Huxley is scheduled to launch on the PC in the 4th Quarter of 2009. An Xbox 360 version is scheduled to be released 6 months after the PC version.

  • Huxley goes viral... more.

There's a new "Making of Huxley" video up on YouTube. You won't get much out of it if you don't speak the language, but it's got some cool shots of the game in action.

Check it out here, and props to VirginWorlds for the tip.

  • GDC Preview: Huxley

MMORPG.com has updated their site this morning with a look at Huxley from GDC.

At this year's Game Developers Conference, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Huxley Producer, Kijong Kang to watch a demo of the game and its progress thus far. Now, I should probably say that, for me, the entire design premise is about combining my two favorite genres into one, single game. This being my first up-close look at Huxley, I was extremely interested to see what this game had to offer.

  • New Huxley Screenshots from GDC 2007

These four screenshots serve as dramatic examples of the effort that the developers of Huxley are putting into their upcoming MMOFPS. Jason Wonacott at Webzen sent these images our direction to give Ten Ton Hammer readers an example of the gameplay that was described in yesterday's preview of Huxley. Simply browsing through these screenshots really gives you a feel for the frantic and terrifying nature of this game. Don't wait any longer and take a look!

  • Blending Genres - A GDC Preview of Huxley

While other titles have attempted to integrate MMOs with first-person shooters, the developers behind Huxley are trying to be the first to truly blend the two elements harmoniously. At GDC 2007, Ten Ton Hammer was able to grab a sneak peek of the game and has put together a preview of the intricate workings of the game. Vehicles, starting races, skills, and more are all covered in this preview!

Huxley follows a very similar pattern that has already been established in other FPS-RPGs like System Shock and Deus Ex; instead of giving players the ability to use every weapon and ability from the outset, players must earn various skills (like double-jump, health monitors, and more) before they can actually use the devices that employ them. There will be skills that are race-specific, but the developers were tight-lipped on this particular ruleset.

  • Our First Look Inside the MMOFPS World of Huxley

If you can get past the English boarding school-sounding name to take a look at Huxley, this game might satisfy that white-knuckle gaming urge like the RPG in MMORPG titles can't. Here's our first in-game look at Webzen's MMOFPS (FPS meaning first-person shooter), and here's hoping Huxley has the online framework and character development depth to match its refreshing rapid pace and good looks.

WEBZEN Inc. (NASDAQ: WZEN), a leading global online entertainment company, today released a brand new game play trailer featuring in-game footage for its highly anticipated massively multiplayer online first-person shooter Huxley. Produced for and shown at the G-Star trade show in Korea, the new trailer showcases intense FPS action, a variety of locations including the hub city, vehicles, monsters and much more.

Huxley utilizes the Unreal 3.0 engine and WEBZEN's proprietary networking technology to create an enriched game play experience with up to 5,000 players in the same world. Huxley takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where human beings have mutated and divided into two opposing races – the Sapiens and the Alternatives. Key to their battle for survival is Lunarites, a promising new energy source highly coveted by each race. Forced to fight against one another for the continuance of their races, the Sapiens and Alternatives must accomplish the unthinkable as they work to eliminate the opposition and gain control of the world and its resources.

  • New Huxley Visuals from Webzen

Korean developer Webzen hopes to bust onto the western MMO scene in a big way with Huxley, a PC-Xbox 360 cross-platform first-person shooter MMO due out in Q4 2006. Team Xboxis sports some new screenshots of this persistent-world plinker:

These latest screenshots are from the PC version of the game but considering the game uses the Unreal Engine 3 and with the visuals Epic has already achieved for Gears of Wars, we have no doubt WEBZEN will use those additional six months to make the Xbox 360 version look as good as its PC counterpart.

Check out the new Huxley screens at Team Xbox.

  • Bill Cosby need not apply.
GameSpot threw a Q&A at Kijong Kang and Kijong Kang threw it right back, chock full of Huxley information.

"Online role-playing games are easily the rage right now, especially considering that a game like World of Warcraft has more than 6 million subscribers. However, online first-person shooters are an entirely different story. We're not talking about conventional shooters that can be played online with 16, or even 64, players. Rather, we're talking about online shooters that allow thousands of players to interact online and potentially hundreds to battle it out among one another. While there have been a handful of attempts to date to make an online first-person shooter, none have taken off. However, there's a new game on the horizon from South Korea's Webzen that has captured a lot of attention. Huxley is an online first-person shooter that has an unusual name, as well as some amazing visuals, judging from the early screens released thus far. Based on Unreal Engine 3 technology, Huxley looks to meld first-person shooter gameplay with the scale and scope of an online game. For details, we turned to Kijong Kang, the producer in charge of the Huxley team at Webzen."
