  • Kiara Gets Geeky?

Back to school, to prove to dad that I'm not a fool. I got my lunch packed up, my boots tied tight, hope I don't get in a fight! The lower end game is a crucial point in any MMO. Kiara shares with us her thoughts and feelings by singing Grease 2, and somehow managing to tie in shinies again.

Spending my vacation in the summer sun... Oops! Didn't realize you were there... No, I wasn't singing a song from Grease 2. * shifty * Cause that would make me really totally beyond acceptably geeky.

    * embarassed silence *

Anyway!! It's about that time of year when the kids go back to school. Yay, for more grown up time. Boo, for more traffic in the morning. School buses are slow! But, as we all know, school is a very necessary thing. Learning is important and something we do through our whole lives.

Read more and see what all this has to do with EQ2. When you're done let us know what your thoughts are in the forums at EQ2 Ten Ton Hammer!

  • Thoughts on the Newbie Experience...

Today across the Ten Ton Hammer network we're going back to school and talking about the newbie experiences in our favorite games. Since our favorite game here at Vanguard Ten Ton Hammer hasn't launched yet (and we don't know much about how the game will treat the average newb), Medeor opted to take a humorous look at how Vanguard might treat newcomers (and that means all of us who weren't lucky enough to beta test the game) at launch. Are you ready, class? Let's begin.

"I have very basic expectations for your first days here at the Vanguard Academy. During this very exciting time we will focus on the three Rs: Realms, Reputation and Recuperation. You need to make choices with your life; you may as well start with these."

Get clicking to see what else Medeor has in store of us. What do you think the newbie experience will be like in Vanguard? Head over to the forums at Vanguard Ten Ton Hammer and let us know! Don't forget to find out how you can win a beta spot by reading our forums while you are there!

  • Turbine Gives DDO Players a Solid Primer

As we prepare to enter DDO Quest Week here at Ten Ton Hammer, we take a look at the outstanding job Turbine does in preparing adventurers for the intricacies of DDO. From the starting area called Smuggler's Rest to the completion of Lord Gerald Goodblade's quests, Turbine has tweaked difficulty until they got it right. And they don't overload new players with information that may not pertain to their chosen class.

"The player behind Clubthor the barbarian just wants to smash things; he doesn’t care how to prepare arcane spells, but the arcane training room will be there in Smuggler’s Keep for him when he rolls Boomguy the sorcerer later. Turbine did a terrific job with this area."

Keep reading to see more ways that Turbine prepares it's players for the challenges of the game. Do you think they got it right? Let us know in the forums at DDO Ten Ton Hammer!

  • The Instance Guides Keep Coming!

Our latest instance guide covers the sprawling instance of Dire Maul currently under control by scary demons, a wacky Orge gang, and magic thirsty Elves. We've got a complete walkthrough of each of the three wings containing plenty of information to slay your enemies and get through this instance quickly and efficiently!

"Dire Maul is located in the middle of Feralas, along the northern border. The entrance is guarded by the fierce Gordok Orges. This isn't a problem as most of them are low level and easily avoidable. As for the entrances to each wing, the west and north entrances are all the way at the very northern tip of the courtyard while the east entrance is toward the eastern side. The north and west wing are locked, requiring a key from the eastern wing to open (only one person needs to open it, the doors can be opened from the inside via a torch on the wall)."

Ready to learn more? Get clicking and head over to WoW Ten Ton Hammer. Share your impressions of this guide with us in the forums. Tell us your tips for successfully doing this instance.

  • My Internet connection woes seem to be behind me. I'd knock on something, but it's a wireless connection. Knock on air I suppose?
Here in the Great White North, in order to coach 7-year-old hockey players you are forced to take 16 hours of "classes" over the course of two days. You must then take a "preventative services" course for an additional four hours. I coach not because I'm a good guy trying to give back to the community, but because I don't want a knucklehead coaching my kids. The vast majority of the 20 hours spent on the ice and in the classroom is not consumed discussing how best to teach our young players. It is spent discussing how to best deal with the parents that will inevitably cause problems. I see a great parallel between this travesty and MMOGs.
The vast majority of developer time, post-release of a MMOG is spent creating content for end-game players, yet end-game players make up a small portion of the game population. Many developers spend countless hours trying to appease end-game players in an attempt to retain them. Would it make more sense to spend some of that time improving the early and mid-game experience? I think so, and here's why...

  • A shoddy Internet connection is going to cut Loading... short today. My wireless high-speed Internet has been heavy on the "less" and light on the "high-speed" for the last three days. As I stagger through seconds of connectivity followed by minutes of nothingness I'll try to get this posted. My apologies for the short link lists today.

While I bang my head on the desk, please bang your fingers on the keyboard to visit our Vanguard site. We are giving away a Beta Slot!
Short lists, Vin beverages, three exclusive MMOG articles and a chocolate Virgin Mary are but a click away.
