  • The9 stocks up.
NCSoft obtaining controling interest in NC Sina has pushed The9 stocks up over 40% in two weeks. The9 is one of China's largest online game portal companies.

"Korean game developer NCSoft has recently assumed full control of its "NC Sina" joint venture by acquiring the 51% stake held by former partner Sina Corp. This development has, in turn, fueled speculation that NCSoft might choose The9 Limited to operate its popular online game Guild Wars in China, which would be a boon to The9."

  • This just in... (literally!)

Lady Sirse, from our Vanguard @ TenTonHammer community site, had a chance a to sit down and talk with Senior Game Designer Darrin McPherson, better known as Talisker to most of the Vanguard: Saga of Heroes Community, at Fanguard last January. He shared some insight into two of the unique classes planned to debut in this much anticipated game. Darrin and Lady Sirse spoke about the Dread Knight and the Disciple...

We moved on to chat about the Dread Knight. These two words are capable of sparking speculation in historic proportions. Happy to have a chance to dispel some of the growing misconceptions, Darrin said, “Think of Batman, or of Punisher, they are similar to the Dread Knight. They do what it takes to get the job done and then go back to everyday life. They aren’t evil per say, they just do what it takes.”

Find out some of the things planned for these classes and read the full exclusive interview with Sigil's Darrin McPherson.

Be sure to take a look back through all the other coverage from January's Fanguard in San Diego brought to you by Lady Sirse and Niborea of Vanguard - TenTonHammer!

  • Just in case you haven't read it yet, there is a new Deo's Space at the Official Gods and Heroes Forums.

The game is looking hot, so much so that when we showed this to several executives, one of them said that this was easily the best looking MMO he had ever seen. Sure, we've got the visual look to make all the video cards scream, but really that's only the surface of what we're preparing to unleash upon the PC gaming world. In truth, it's the squad combat that is looking incredible and let me tell you, it is really amazing to see how this team has risen to conquer the inherent challenges of implementing an AI-controlled system of minions.

  • From Age of Empires a highly successful RTS to an unknown MMO. This company has the Hutzpah to do it. Next Gen did an interview with Ensemble's crew in Dallas.

Hudson explains the origin of the project. "We've got a lead designer here, his name's Ian Fischer, he's been here for a long time. He's always wanted to do an MMO. He's been playing MMOs since the early days, MUDs, before that."

The idea was proposed to Ensemble right after Ultima Online came out. 'Why don't we do an MMO?' At the time, Ensemble was in no position to be thinking about it. But Fischer persisted ever since.

It's still in the "noodling" phase but don't be surprised if we hear an announcement in the near future.

  • April Fools' Day Fun!

While we could be old codgers and gripe that the devs should be working on real content, it's nice to see that some of our favorite games have a pulse. Here are some MMORPG April Fools' Day highlights:

EverQuest 2's Quest for Lucan - SOE offers a bit of self-effacing fun with a sham website introducing a "contest" to find a real-life lookalike for arch-villain Lucan D'Lere. The theme plays off of last year's mildly ridiculous "Quest for Antonia" - where a yearlong modelling contract was awarded to Anna Wainscot of Davis, CA - a college student with. shall we say, questionable gaming interest. Applicants aged 60+ years are urged to apply.

WoW's Triple Whammy - Blizzard simultaneously announces "BurgerCraft" - a chain of World of Warcraft-themed fast-food restaurants, and the inclusion of Wisps (with their "amazing" self-detonation racial ability) as the new "Burning Legion" expansion Alliance race. Also, check out the "leaked" WoW version 1.11 patch notes.

    Other non-gaming related web pranks:

    • Google Romance (Beta) - Improve your chances of finding that special someone with the ability to upload multiple, "wildly divergent" profiles!

    • Homestar Runner - Something seemed a little off as I sought out my weekly Strongbad email fix this morning!

Found more? Send 'em to me, and I'll post the links for everyone to enjoy!

  • New City of Villains Issue 7 "Patron Powers" Screenshots!

More fun screenshots from the folks at Cryptic Studios, originators of the City of Villains / City of Heroes series of comic book-inspired MMOs.

Cull the favor of arch villains to earn their patronage and, in turn, acquire some of their powers. This particular screenshot shows Mako's "blood in the water" power; how could summoning sharks be anything but cool? From Cryptic:

The exact powers you acquire will be determined by the unique combination of your Patron and your archetype. For instance, Scirocco can grant you access to many of the Mu Mystic powers, but your archetype will determine which specific Mu powers you will get. The powers you gain will be those that your archetype cannot typically access on its own (for example, Brutes will gain ranged attacks, while Corruptors will have access to defensive armors).

Check out these new screenshots from what promises to be a very cool free expansion: City of Villains Issue 7 "Patron Powers" screenshots right here at TenTonHammer!

  • PvP with no monthly fee.
Pro-G has a preview of Guild Wars: Factions up and ready to be perused.

"The Factions campaign itself is set on an Asian-styled continent called Cantha, and (as the title implies) the story revolves around a conflict between two warring factions, the Luxon and the Kurzick. Player guilds can form alliances to side with one of these two factions, and then engage in alliance battles, the result of which will give the victorious alliance control over towns and unlock elite-level cooperative quests."
