  • BioWare announced today that they are opening a new studio in Austin, Texas. It looks like they're going to enter the already competitive MMO market. Here is what Blues had to say about it.

EDMONTON, Alberta--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 13, 2006--Canadian videogame developer BioWare Corp. has announced the opening of a new studio, BioWare Austin, based in Austin, Texas. It is the second of BioWare's studios and the first to be located outside of Canada.

BioWare Austin has already begun work on a Massively Multiplayer Online roleplaying game (MMORPG) title; the new game will mark BioWare's debut in the Massively Multiplayer Online space. BioWare has recruited some of the top talent in MMO and RPG development, both to manage the development efforts at BioWare Austin and to collaborate with the experienced team at BioWare Edmonton, to develop a game that combines the best of BioWare's great past games with a compelling persistent online experience. Joining the Austin team as lead designer is James Ohlen, BioWare's Creative Director, whose previous credits include lead or co-lead design roles on Star Wars®: Knights of the Old Republic(TM), Neverwinter Nights(TM), Baldur's Gate(TM) and Baldur's Gate II(TM). Also leading the BWA team are MMO veterans Richard Vogel and Gordon Walton. Richard Vogel brings 15 years of experience to BioWare Austin, previously serving as VP of Product Development for Sony Online Entertainment's Austin studio, as well as launching Ultima Online(TM) as a senior producer at Origin. Gordon Walton recently served as VP, studio manager and executive producer at Sony Online Entertainment as well as VP and Executive Producer at Electronic Arts.

This is good news everyone! I've always like BioWare's single player games. Weird news everyone, Austin Texas is quickly becoming the capital of MMO Dev houses.

  • Middle Earth has so many fascinating places to visit. The world has a very rich environment. With that said, Turbine has released a new point of interest, Trestlebridge

Adventurers traveling north from the Bree-land along the mostly-abandoned Greenway will encounter a truly formidable barrier to further northerly travel: the dark cleft of Cirith Núr. Knifing between the North Downs and the southern regions of the shadowed and mysterious lands of Angmar, this dark cleft once held waters flowing out of Emyn Uial in the West. Over the ages, this mighty river has since receded, leaving only the sharp cliff edges and the uncertain depths below.

As a side note, the concept art that they have to go with the description is absolutely gorgeous!

  • I always look forward to updates on the Age of Conan site. I believe in the Funcom developers. AO may not have been the most popular game but it was impressive in it's depth of design and it's graphical beauty when it released. I think that Age of Conan will be similiar.

Anyway, they've put up a new gameplay preview. Ranged Combat

ost of the ranged combat stances see the action shift into a kind of first person view. The camera zooms into an over the shoulder or first person view and displays a targeting crosshairs. Here you aim with your weapon, and fire towards advancing opponents much like you might find in a FPS game (but not quite as fast-paced). This serves to try and bring the player "there", into the action, and into the world.

  • v14.104 of the Auto Assault beta client has been released and is available through the patcher or on the FTP site. You can read about all the things the patch fixes in the Patch Notes page. This patch features a lot of changes to the summoning system as well as some mission fixes and additions to Ground Zero.

It's so close to release I can taste it.. What does a post apocolyptic MMO taste like? It's salty.

  • Richard Allen Garriott, executive producer, NCsoft® North America, will be honored with this year's Game Developers Choice Award for Lifetime Achievement. A respected pioneer of the computer gaming world and best known for his monumental game series Ultima, Garriott will be recognized for fueling the presence of Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games (MMORPG) in the mass market. The iconic game maker, known in the industry as Lord British, is credited with being a giant force within the gaming community. Produced and hosted by the Game Developers Conference (GDC) and presented by the International Game Developers Association (IGDA), the 6th annual Game Developers Choice Awards ceremony will take place on Wednesday, March 22 at the San Jose Civic Auditorium.

Since I'll be there I'll make sure to take pictures! It always seems odd when someone so young gets a lifetime achievement award. You expect someone who's been doing his craft for a hundred years to grab it. Ahhh how time flies. This industry is still so very young.
