  • OGaming has an interview with Turbine's CEO Jeff Anderson

OGaming: Why the decision to self-publish your own titles?

Jeff Anderson : Before joining Turbine I was the executive in charge of production at Origin/Electronic Arts. At EA, I saw firsthand the strength of the publisher model with Ultima Online. There are terrific creative synergies and economies that come from developing and operating a self-published title. I wanted to bring that experience to Turbine.

What he really wanted to say was "So we could say SCHNEH! to the big boys!

  • Is it odd that I get the "Piano Man" song stuck in my head every time I think of bards or minstrels? Someone reserve a room at the looney bin! Turbine has posted new information on the Minstrel Class for Lord of the Rings Online.

    Minstrel
    Races: Man, Elf, Dwarf, Hobbit

'. . . in the midst of their merriment and tears the clear voice of the minstrel rose like silver and gold, and all men were hushed.'

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, "The Field of Cormallen"

With song and tale, a Minstrel brings hope to places thick with gloom. He can inspire those with desperate minds and heavy hearts to great deeds. In battle, he can turn the tide with songs that strengthen his allies and dirges which strike fear into the hearts of his enemies.

The Minstrel will be the class of choice for players who want to aid their friends, inspiring them to keep going through the darkest of times. With a vast repertoire of tales both fair and foul, a Minstrel restores the morale of his fellows, as well as causing his enemies to despair. Though able to wield weapons, he prefers to let his words, rather than his sword, speak for him. A Minstrel's style of combat is based on maintaining hope no matter what the odds.

  • It looks like Sony is previewing EQ2 - Kingdom of Sky at CES this week. Gamespot has the scoop.

In story terms, Kingdom of Sky will focus on the warriors' of Norrath's battle against the residents of the Overrealm, a mystical and previously undiscovered territory consisting of islands floating high above the land. Players will begin to see in-game clues, such as NPC dialogue, indicating that those reaching a high enough level will be able to erect "teleportation spires" that they can then use to travel to the Overrealm and battle the creatures dwelling there, who intend to enslave and conquer Norrath.

Some of the new beings you'll find in the Overrealm include humanoid races resembling eagles and vultures, as well as a number of rather fearsome dragon bosses. We got to see one particularly fearsome bone dragon dungeon boss that ought to provide some nice loot for fearless adventurers. The islands and architecture of the Overrealm have a classical, Middle Eastern-influenced look to them, as well.

Good to see the Warriors getting some lovin.

  • Holy Pirates Batman! These guys are seriously ramping up their coverage lately. This is definately good news for a game that has been mired in development crap for the last few years. GameCloud has an interview with John Tynes, Lead Designer and Writer for Flying Labs.

Gamecloud - First, we have to ask you how the current beta test is coming along?

John Tynes - At our website you’ll find a new devlog from our QA manager, Misha, on that very topic! We have a couple dozen players in there doing several sessions a week and it’s going very well. They’ve helped us identify some firewall issues we didn’t know about and have been giving us great feedback on gameplay. They’re also having a lot of fun enjoying both missions and PvP battles. It’s a real blast for us, too, to just log in and hang out with some actual players in our game!

  • MMORPG.com has a new Dark and Light QNA up for your reading pleasure.

MMORPG.com: There are those in our forums who feel that NP3 is attempting to “scam” people out of their money by charging players for the Pioneer offer, which, in effect, is asking them to support a game which has not yet been completed. How do you respond to this?
The Dark & Light Team: This would be true if we only offer a key for Dark and Light. But we proposed as very complete and value added package no other player will never be able to get. Other offers will come to prepare the release of Dark and Light but none will be as rich as the Pioneer Offer.

"no other player will never be able to get" Ouch! Someone forgot to do a grammar check.

  • "In the wild and deadly battles in the wastelands, a chassis’ armor protection is one of the most vital elements of survival." Well you can't beat that with a stick! NetDevil has posted their latest installment of features on the Official Site today. This one deals with your Vehicle's Armor

Throughout the history of warfare the technological development of better forms of protection and ways of survival always follows the development of new weapon systems and methods of destruction. For instance, one side develops a new weapon and after an initial period of adjustment, the opponent fields a way of protecting against it. The new weapon proliferates to all sides and eventually the protection does as well, so the cycle begins anew. In the Central Wastelands, little of this process has changed.

Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee

In the typical sandwich combat MMO, there’s little point in trying to dodge blows from a monster you’re fighting; it’s programmed to hit you regardless. While you can engage a DDO monster in that manner, real-time reactions will make you a much more efficient fighter (with a lot more hit points left over at the end of a fight). Don’t just stand in front of the enemy and trade blows. Keep those feet moving - to the flanks - adjust your position. Much like boxers and marital artists do, move around to keep your opponent off-balance. Nimble monsters present a challenge, they may move to face you as fast as you move away, so mix your movement by also jumping back and forth as you attack. I see too many barbarians and rangers (in light armor) trying to trade blows toe-to-toe. They may win, but are often more wounded than necessary and are soon dipping into their potion supply or crying for the nearest healer when the next encounter slams the party. And healers, just like fighters, are working on a strategic budget in any given dungeon crawl - there’s no automatic health or magic point regeneration here!

  • This has absolutely nothing to do with gaming and everything to do with my personal sanity. Since either Fox and / or WB has taken every single show that I love to watch off of their lineup over the last 2 years, I feel that it is time to take a stand. Now admittedly I'm really funny as a crazy lady, but I'd like to keep some shred of dignity as your daily newscaster. So! With that said, take a moment to visit Save Our Bluths.

Arrested Development is seriously one of the funniest shows on Television right now and it would be a murderous shame to have it taken off the air. Monday nights People! Tune in!
