  • Nope, no woo-woo factor in Auto Assault!

Though Auto Assault is nowhere, noway, nohow conceptually close to San Andreas, both in its play and in its morbid lechery, the Denver Post asked NetDevil Co-Founder Scott Brown to tell of his fears and jeers regarding the video game sex fiasco.

Scott Brown, NetDevil co-founder and chief executive, said the firestorm over Grand Theft Auto is "a bit over the top." But he said he wouldn't oppose government regulation of games - as long as it's fair. "(Auto Assault) is definitely not a kid's game. I think we should be firm about who gets their hands on video games," Brown said.

  • Ganked! Saturday edition.
Ethec here with a weekend lowdown segment that my hazy Saturday morning brain has decided to temporarily label "Ganked!" Ganked in MMOG circles means, generically, to get ripped off. If someone comes along and in one round obliterates the feeble blightrat you've been struggling to kill without mana for the last 3 hours, thus taking all the experience and loot, you've been ganked.
Just like you've been ganked if you came here hoping to see some fresh insights from our mutual friend, Boomjack. To that end, no worries. Boomjack will be back on Monday with the "Loading..." segment that makes us laugh, cry, and want to curdle into our MMOG news turtleshell with the sheer ridiculousness of it all.
For now your forced to see what I consider funny. I've received word that what I consider funny is currently being printed out, wadded up, and used in conjunction with duct tape to plug small holes in Scandanavian oil tankers. This is a happy development; I'm glad to be doing my part to help the environment.
Without any further ado, on to the real news you can't really use. You can't make this stuff up.

  • Arggh matey, thar blows an admiralty office!

Flying Lab Software's winter release development team posted some visually impressive shots of pirates, French & British administrative offices, and a few combat shots of a two-decker in action. This long-time Patrick O'Brien fan is drooling!

Here are a few of the areas we've been working on this milestone. Exteriors include the French and British towns with one shot of British town at night. Interiors include the admiralty office, company office, magistrate's office (look closely and you'll see our particle dust in the light rays), and the rich salon. There's a shot of the new cannon particle smoke and some cannonballs in mid-air.

  • Dwarves and Giants... Fair Fight or Dev Megalomania?

The latest in a series detailing the various mobs you'll run into in DDO has hit the official site, this time recounting a duel between a few good-guy dwarves and a bad-guy Fire Giant. The only other story we could find about a dwarf and a giant involved Bridget the Midget, and parents will want to prevent their kids from google-ing that one!

Note that you'll need to register for full official forums access to get the full article (it's free!), but here's a teaser:

Watching a dwarf fight a giant is an interesting sight - the dwarves are trained to combat larger foes and dodge about the blows of their larger cousins with surprising ease. Zarn brought his greataxe down, sundering the giant's armor, giving Khovis the opportunity to deal a grievous blow to his opponent with his holy warhammer.

  • Phinney's Fantabulous Foray into Fan Feedback!

James Phinney, lead designer for Guild Wars, posted his responses to a player roundtable hosted late Thursday based on Phinney's "State of the Game" letter. Guild Hall improvements, changes to PvP and ladder sessions, and general room for improvement were on the docket.

Despite the cries and tumult of numerous guilds warring in the hallway outside, Phinney managed to poset a few responses:

Question: What is the one area of GW *you* would like tweak?

James: "One" area? You must be kidding. As a game designer, you have to be incredibly foolish or incredibly egotistical to not see a ton of things to improve in any game you've worked on. The way I see it, every game you make is a learning experience. Usually, you just have to take the lessons with you and try to apply them to your next game, but with Guild Wars we have the opportunity to keep making the game better.

There's a lot of passion for Guild Wars on the team. We like to play the game. We experience a lot of the same things everyone else does. We know that at its best, Guild Wars offers experiences that are unique and insanely fun. We're going to keep working to make every part of the game live up to those moments. The user interface guys are always looking to make improvements where and when they can. The mission and quest design guys are really looking forward to taking the lessons we learned in Chapter 1 (oh so many lessons) and making Chapter 2 that much better. We're currently reviewing balance on all the Chapter 1 skills in preparation for the first official ladder season. The artists are doing amazing things for Sorrow's Furnace and for Chapter 2. And, of course, we're always looking at the economy and rate of character advancement.

  • The Space Shuttle isn't the only thing getting a bird's eye view of Irth...

Magic Hat Software's "Irth Online" gets an honest look from MMORPG.com. With the planned release less than 10 days away, it looks like Magic Hat might need to pull some magic out of their... hat (sorry).

"Combat procedure is pretty standard for an MMO, with a few good original tweaks — and a few bad ones. For instance, whenever the player is hit their screen flashes red. This effect is pretty cool as long as you are not hit very often, but if you have two or three monsters attacking you it becomes a real eyesore. One solution to this (and to the loss of hit points in general) is to use spells such as Nuke or Divine Touch to kite monsters. Cast a spell on your target, turn around and run a bit, then turn and cast another spell. Most of the monsters in the game are your speed or a tiny bit slower."

Find out what else this alternate-reality MMOG (set roughly in medieval times) has to offer you here!

  • The little known NKGN (North Korea Goes Nuclear) factor in modern MMOG development...

What's it like to enter the big-time MMOG industry as a small independent developer? How will a vehicle-based futuristic game fair in a genre primarily geared to the wonts of fantasy fans? Will Kim Jong Il influence AA's development? How many cuss words will a dev have to have visi-bleeped in a formal interview?

Answers to these burning questions and more in a candid interview with Design Director Ryan Seabury at UK's Prodigious Gaming website:

Pro-G: Was there ever a point where you felt you had undertaken a job that was slightly beyond you?

Ryan: NetDevil has a pretty can-do attitude - obvious by the hours that we work. We bend over backwards to do what we say we're going to do. There's always uncertainty as an independent developer. Until you have a consistent revenue stream coming in from some hit game, or at least a couple of OK games, it's pretty scary, because all of our money is coming in from one publisher at this point. JumpGate is still active but it's not by any means a commercial success.

North Korea could just blow the sh*t out of Seoul someday which would destabilise NCsoft because they're a Korean company. We think about those things. We have to. That would destroy their cash flow and then our project's gone all of a sudden. Those are the kinds of things that have to enter your mind as part of the cognitive process for an independent developer.

I don't know if there's ever been any 'oh sh*t' moments. There's never been a point when we were like, 'man this sucks, like what have we been doing?'

Ryan recounts more indy-dev highs and lows here!

  • More fun than a Mongolian cluster... nevermind.

This week's edition of the DAoC Herald focuses on a flurry of questions regarding the upcoming server reclustering announced this week:

Q: (Insert question on clustering and timers here)

A: I deliberately skipped the most popular set of questions this week, because there are a number of things still under discussion in terms of limits, timers (as you saw from the poll), accessing your characters in different realms on the same cluster, grandfather clauses, and creating new characters on the clusters. I also don't have a new implementation schedule for the proposed new clusters yet. The information I have on the Herald from earlier this year is outdated and incorrect.

Have a DAoC question you'd like answered in the most minimal, roundabout way possible? Details on how to get your submission its negative two seconds of fame, as well as the rest of this article, here!

  • They threw a Warrior / Monk into Sorrow's Furnace and got... two new screenshots!

The Sorrow's Furnace Gallery at the official GW site has been expanded by two screenshots. Take a look at them to get more previews of the Ascended content to come.

    From GuildWars.com:
    New Screenshots - 04 August 2005

We're expanding the Sorrow's Furnace Gallery Page with another pair of screenshots from the Summer Update. One image displays the external depths of Grenth's Footprint just outside the entry to the mines. The second shows combat within the green-hued interior of one area of Sorrow's Furnace.

  • FFXI + XBox 360 = Mutant MMOG.
Computer and Video Games has posted a preview of Final Fantasy XI on the XBox 360. Coming soon to every platform even remotely near you:

"Xbox 360 Final Fantasy XI is unique. When the game arrives, you will play alongside people that have been living, breathing and attempting to breed in its online world for three years. This is thanks to the Xbox 360 game being compatible with the PlayStation 2 and PC versions of the huge role-play epic. It's going to be like walking into a small village pub where everyone knows each other. You'll be the weird outsider wearing the pink T-shirt and yellow wristband that's going to worry about getting beaten up on the way home."
