  • A server for (just about) every user?!?

After betting a symbolic quarter that in two years, Second Life's concurrent user numbers will eclipse WoW's, Linden Lab execs state that scaling isn't a problem, despite the fact that each physical server only handles 3 users at peak concurrency (!).

There's little question that "Second Life" manages far fewer users per server than other virtual worlds. Sony Online Entertainment's "EverQuest II," which has more than 250,000 users, runs on about 1,100 dual-CPU, x86 (x86 is the processor architecture used by most AMD and Intel chips) servers spread across 37 clusters of 20 to 40 servers. Each of those handles around 116 users at peak usage, according to figures provided by SOE.

    (...)

"My understanding of (Linden Lab's) back-end requirements are that they're absurd and unsustainable," said Daniel James, CEO of Three Rings, publisher of the online game "Puzzle Pirates." "They have (about) as many peak simultaneous players as we do, and we're doing it on four CPUs."

  • "Your daughter and the Moor... er, Tauren... are now making the beast with two backs." - Iago, I.i (sort of)

As a class project, some industrious youths have acted out Shakespeare's play "Othello" in World of Warcraft and recorded a video for posterity. We'd give them an "A".

This adaptation was created as a class project. The version includes the whole cast of Othello acted out by WoW toons, complete with newly scripted lines and more.

With a running time of just over 13 minutes and a musical score that includes a little CCR with “Bad Moon Rising” and some “Obsession” by Animotion, this is the funniest remake of anything I think I’ve ever seen anywhere. The entire video is very well done. It’s a little fuzzy, but that minor problem is worth getting past.

Q: What does the typical World of Warcraft raid share with Shakespearean tragedies?
A: Everyone dies at the end.

I plan to do "Titus Andronicus" myself, casting undead so they can do the cannibalism part at the end.

I could go on and on, but instead I'll direct you to Irish site Ignig.com for a preview of "Othello," set in World of Warcraft

  • More information on our most anticipated MMO here at Ten Ton Hammer. This time german fansite SWB interviews senior producer, Dan Ellgren.

SWB: Hi Dan thanks for your time !

    DAN: Pleasure.

SWB: Do you know at this time when the publication date is?

DAN: We are still in the pre-production phase of the project so it is too soon at this point to narrow down a specific publication date.

SWB: Will the character use a DHD (Dial home Device)?

DAN: Of course, yet how that is interfaced with the player is still going through iteration.

SWB: Will we meet characters from the series like O'Neill, Carter or Daniel?

DAN: It is a little early to say how or if these main characters will be in the storyline.

SWB: Will there be a storyline?

  • Some say finally. I say when was the last time you played D&D alone? Come ON! It's a game meant to play with a group of people or at least a partner for the love of pete. I digress. Here's the scoop.

    The Harbor Solo Option

Quests in the Harbor have a new option available to you, opening up solo gameplay during your character's earliest levels. In addition to the Normal, Hard and Elite settings already available for each dungeon, the Solo option allows you to take on a dungeon at a difficulty setting suited for a single player. When you enter a dungeon on the solo setting, it contains monsters and traps that can be defeated without the help of a party.

After completing the solo adventures, you will be better prepared to gather allies and gain the best Experience rewards and loot, only available at the higher difficulty settings. Solo mode will not unlock the Hard and Elite difficulty settings. To gain access to the increased danger and reward from the Harbor's higher difficulty settings, you will need to complete each dungeon on its Normal setting, just as you do today.

The Waterworks, Irestone Inlet and the Kobold Assault dungeons will remain areas that require a team to conquer. The Solo difficulty setting will not be available in these areas.

You can read the rest here.

  • Rogues are getting even more uber. What a surprise!

Every Rogue loves to sneak attack. This hallmark of the Rogue will become even more powerful with new enhancements designed to make Sneak Attacks more likely to land and able to do more damage. Rogues will be getting two new lines of enhancements – sneak attack accuracy and sneak attack training.

Sneak attack accuracy gives you a +N to hit when sneak attacking. Sneak attack accuracy has three versions, received at levels 3, 6, and 9, giving +1, +2, and +3 respectively to hit. Level 10 characters will be able to purchase the level 9 enhancement (+3 to hit).

Sneak attack training gives you a +1 to damage when sneak attacking. There will be one version of sneak attack training at each level, giving +1 through +10 damage.

  • DnD Vault has an interview with Executive Producer James Jones.

DnD Vault recently conducted an interview with DDO Executive Producer, James Jones:

    * When will the next module be released?

The Twilight Forge module will be released in July and offers an entirely new system to support solo play as well as a new playable race the Drow. We’ve been listening to the community and hear the message loud and clear that sometimes players just like to do things on their own, or at least have the opportunity to do quests while they wait for their friends or guild mates to login.

  • It's a new feature that gives you an overview of everything that has happened in the last month.

    Hello folks!

I am Andreas "Thee Nailros" Bettermann, Community Manager over here at Spellborn HQ. One of my tasks in this position is to keep our ever-growing community up to date about all the latest happenings to ensure everyone knows what's going on in the world of TCoS. To do so, we decided to introduce a new regular feature: the monthly Community Summary. The idea is to give everybody a short (Okay, I will TRY to keep it short...) summary of things going on over here.

    Enjoy the read!

You will notice that yours truly was featured. If you haven't read my take on tCoS, you should. You'll like what you see of this game! (Not my writing of course.) You can read the community summary here.
