  • There's a new class on the official site. Lore-master hits the stage in a blaze of glory!

    Lore-master
    Races: Man, Elf

'This only would he say, that Imladris was of old the name among the Elves of a far northern dale, where Elrond the Halfelven dwelt, greatest of lore-masters.'

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, "The Council of Elrond"

A keeper of ancient lore and otherwise lost knowledge, the Lore-master uses his knowledge of the lesser and greater powers of the world around him to stave off the advances of the shadow for a time, and to treat the wounds and suffering of his companions. In dire need he can use this knowledge to hurt his foes; but this task being extremely difficult, a wise Lore-master would rarely attempt it.

The Lore-master will be the class of choice for the player that enjoys using the power of ancient lore to aid their allies and hinder their foes. Steeped in the histories of Middle-earth Lore-masters are able to aid their fellows in recovering from maladies caused by the forces of the Dark Lord. They can also use their knowledge to daze, harm, or hinder their enemies, as well as give of themselves to strengthen another. Some Lore-masters are even said to be able to communicate with animals and request their aid. A Lore-master's combat style is anchored in the power of knowledge and using it intelligently to defeat evil.

    Eeeevilllll!

  • Johan Tenga has a new entry up at his Age of Conan blog

So what do I mean when I say 'polished'? Seeing something without real graphics or with placeholders scattered around and seeing it complete with the correct graphics in the right environment is totally different. We spend quite some time working on versions with placeholders or things that aren't quite finished yet, so seeing something finished and 'polished' even if its just a small feature in the scope of the entire game is always nice!

  • I had to respond to BoomJack's Loading… this morning. Just the thought of someone questioning something that I believe in so wholly made me start twitching like a crack addict on a ten day detox. How can the DC Universe be made into a successful MMORPG? Let me tell you.

First off, the key word in that question is Universe. Unlike City of Heroes (I have nothing but love so please forgive the following comments.) it's not limited to one city. You have an entire universe that the DC heroes protect. There is an unlimited amount of content that can be gleaned from this source.

One of the smartest decisions that WB made was to create Justice League Unlimited. It opened up the genre to not only the common non-comic book reading person, but it also introduces us to a new cast of characters that not everyone would know about. Instead of the traditional Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash scenario, you are now looking at hundreds of possible characters to play with.

Now, it's unlikely that the MMO will let you play the main characters from the Universe, simply because everyone is going to want to be Batman and you can't have 100,000 of them running around. It creates a lack of variety. However, why not start players out as sidekicks? Would I want to be Batman's sidekick? You bet your bippy I would. Players could focus on leveling them up to be a full blown hero.

It's been mentioned that some of the comics will follow the game. Therefore it would be in a player's best interest to create their own unique character that could possibly be featured in a future issue of the JLA. I can see myself joining the Lanterns and defending troubled planets. The Green Lantern home world Oa becomes a new playing field.

City of Heroes had a few pitfalls. One was the issue of licensing. Everyone wanted to make the Hulk or Captain Marvel. It obviously created problems. Also, the reward system made the game go stale after about a month of play. They could have made up a Universe of their own but they didn't have the resources that Sony will have for their DC product. You have upwards of seventy years of rich history to work with on this project.

Would I like being a Green Arrow or a Black Canary? Sure I would. However, like any MMO, I want to create a character that is my own. It's enough for me to play in a world where these characters exist. I think that you will be surprised with what they are able to accomplish on this one. Am I worried that they won't do it right? I'm shaking in my pajama bottoms. However, saying that there isn't anywhere to go with this one is grossly untrue.

Disagree with me? Tell Me About It.

  • Take out your rubber chicken and clown shoes?

    Caption Contest! - 2/27/06
The archivists here at the RPSA have been going through many of the submissions from the past, cackling and whooping as they came up with oddball quotes describing the situations our past winners found themselves in. As nutty as our archivists are, we think you can do better! From Friday, February 27 to March 15, players can submit clever captions for any of the past RPSA winners pictured below -- we'll pick the best one for each picture! The winners of this contest will each receive a prize package consisting of a Sony PSP handheld gaming system and a SanDisk's Memory Stick PRO Duo™. Take out your rubber chickens and clown shoes -- it's time to make us laugh!

You can go here to find out more. I'd do it for the PSP. I need something to occupy my downtime while I can't get onto my server!

  • The company went bankrupt in 2004 due to a line of unsuccessful games and bad financial management. According to GameCloud, they're back... This time they're planning on publishing Asian MMO's in the Western Hemisphere.

This is a very interesting occurrance. I don't believe that to date there has been one single AMMORPG that has been extremely successful in the American market. However, publishers are still bringing them over. It's a different design. More Grind. Interesting.

    I wish them much luck!

  • This is probably the biggest news today. I could post it and wander off and it would be enough. Red 5, the key members who were behind Blizzard's World of Warcraft, signed an exclusive deal with Webzen to publish the yet untitled property in development.

SEOUL – Feb. 28, 2006 – Global online entertainment company WEBZEN, Inc. (NASDAQ: WZEN) today announced that it has signed an exclusive worldwide agreement with U.S.-based Red 5 Studios, Inc. to publish a new MMOG property. The contract was executed today at WEBZEN’s headquarters in Seoul.

Creating tremendous industry buzz and anticipation since the company’s inception in September 2005, Red 5 Studios was formed by key members behind Blizzard Entertainment®’s World of WarCraft®, including the game’s Team Lead Mark Kern and Art Director William Petras and Online Director for Asia, Taewon Yoon.

“WEBZEN and Red 5 Studios share the same vision and passion to create next generation online games that can successfully suit the tastes and demands of gamers worldwide,” said Nam Ju Kim, CEO, WEBZEN, Inc. “We are confident that projects such as these will help WEBZEN reach its goal of becoming a top global online games publisher.”

The core members at Red 5 studios have proven their development prowess in launching successful online game properties such as Diablo II, Starcraft series and Warcraft III on a global scale. As such, WEBZEN is being heralded for obtaining the company’s promising new game property, which is primed to deliver worldwide market appeal. For WEBZEN, the publishing deal is an important component to its mid-and long-term objective of building a world-class games portfolio.

“WEBZEN offers the optimal environment for developing games, with its world-class technology and overall expertise in online game entertainment,” said Mark Kern, President and CEO, Red 5 Studios. “WEBZEN is becoming a huge force in the global online games marketplace. Their commitment and determination partnered with our unique game concept is a winning combination for a blockbuster title.”

The new game from Red 5 Studios is in its initial stages of development, and more details on the title will be released at a later

The question on everyone's mind is - Will it be as successful or as good as WoW? I'm curious to see.
