  • MMORPG Failures Examined

In today's editorial at the TenTonHammer: Vanguard community site, Eliana takes a look at a current hot topic from the Official Vanguard Forums. The question posed on the thread is "Which MMO were you the most disappointed to see fail?". She looks to find the reasons why some games just cease to entertain us.

A recent discussion thread on the Vanguard Forums asked which massively-multiplayer online game (MMOG) people were the most disappointed to see fail.

"Which MMO were you the most disappointed to see fail?"

The thread had me thinking wistfully about the golden age of EverQuest, when EQ, along with Asheron's Call and Ultima Online, introduced the fantasy worlds of the massively-multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) for the first time. EverQuest, I'm sure, seemed unstoppable. I doubt that many of us who played beginning with beta testing or launch ever dreamed that, even though Norrath might live on, our avatars might not. I know that I didn't anticipate graduating from the Plane of Time to the Plane of Disappointment!

What takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin'? Nope, not a Timex--it's the barbarian, of course. In Dungeons & Dragons Online: Stormreach, this class stands out when it comes to absorbing damage. If you're thinking of playing a barbarian, there's no better way to prepare than by reading our handy (and recently updated) class guide. You'll learn about the barbarian's important abilities, feats, skills and enhancements.

  • Sony put up a new Character Progression Dev Article on the EverQuest 2 page. I don't play the game anymore but reading it was quite interesting.

Players now select their profession at character creation instead of moving from archetype to class to subclass. For example, you can choose to play a Wizard at character creation. When you arrive in the world, you will be a Wizard--not a Mage. Distinct spells and arts designed for each profession are now given immediately in place of the more generic archetype and class versions. You are a member of your final profession right away instead of waiting 19 levels to do so.

Some of the previous class and subclass quests still exist, but they are not required to progress in your chosen profession and will no longer restrict your level growth. Existing characters that were at the archetype or class level will be prompted to choose a profession before logging into the game. Existing spells and arts will be replaced (at the same quality level) by the new profession-specific abilities.

Well what do you know? Evolution at it's best.

  • Can you call it an interview if there aren't any questions and you're doing it to yourself? *shrug* I can't say. However, Chronicles of Spellborn Official Site has an "interview" up about Cold Dawn What is Cold Dawn? Er, I dunno but read on to find out.

he Spellborn Scrolls are pieces of interactive fiction taking place in the world of The Chronicles of Spellborn. The latest Scroll was conceived by Lead Writer Jesse America and is written by Community Manager Mathew Reuther.

From beginning to end, the Scrolls each present a unique challenge to the team. During the conceptual phase, a draft of the upcoming scroll is created. This serves as a roadmap of the plot, and includes details about which choices will lead the reader through the various situations contained within the tale.

With this Scroll, Jesse stepped away from the other storylines he'd created within the previous episodes. Cold Dawn was intended as a method of introducing a bit of the magic of TCoS, and as such a new story made more sense. His goal was to try and bring a bit of the feel of the game's magic system into Scroll format. This was a challenge in that there's often a difference between what makes for exciting reading and interesting gameplay.
