  • And just how did YOU get into the game industry?
GamaSutra has posted a question that is asked on a daily basis to people in the gaming industry. Not all answers are from folks in the MMOG industry, but there are a few and it's a very interesting read. Brad Pitt have never worked in the game industry and it's highly unlikely he would have answered the question like this:

" There was a lot of different paths our respondents took in getting into the industry. Some started in QA, some made the rare transition from a related industry, while others just fell into their career. But all of those surveyed exhibited a great deal of passion and love for the industry, as well as a fair bit of perserverance and determination. "

  • "Anarchy Online" Doesn't Just Describe the WoW PvP Servers!

Third in our series of MMOG profiles, we examine the 2001 Sci-Fi blockbuster MMO Anarchy Online this week. AO introduced a slew of revolutionary changes to the genre after a turgid, buggy start; ideas such as instancing and player housing that soon became staple additions to any rising star.

Who said MMORPGs had to have a fantasy backdrop of orcs, elves, gnomes, and magic? When Anarchy Online busted onto the scene in mid-2001 with its massive 50,000 player-per-server approach, the initial enthusiasm in a true Sci-Fi themed MMOG was tempered by a period of crippling bugs and technical glitches. Funcom was quick to make good on its first MMO, and by the time Dark Age of Camelot was released in November 2001, AO was releasing its first expansion ("Notum Wars") to compliment a polished, unique, and fun-to-play package.

AO's differences aren't purely thematic or technical. When I first logged onto AO and was muddling through the fairly-steep learning curve of a combat and advancement system (steep, despite a brutal assault by popup tips), I realized I was being followed by a player character. Being fairly used to other MMOGs, where newbie zones are sort of a terrorist playground, I didn't pay much attention at first. When I turned around, I realized this player, "Greeter Mitzuharu" was trying desperately to get my attention. Wait a sec..."Greeter"? This was an actual, true-to-life person, welcoming me to the game, and asking me if I had any questions. I was almost too surprised to reply!

Far from eulogizing games like AO or boxing them up as "past their prime", we honor them as "going concerns" in the only genre for whom constant improvement is a way of life for the developers. MMOGs are truly gamers' games.

  • New Antonia Rules. Nerdly Types Drool.
In a contest that began in early 2005, SOE announced that Anna Wainscoat, the woman interestingly surnamed after wallboard, is the new skimpily-clad Queen Antonia. The reward: a paid year of dressing up as Queen Antonia as various gamer events around the world. The punishment: a paid year of dressing up as Queen Antonia as various gamer events around the world.

"Sony Online Entertainment congratulates Anna Wainscoat, a gamer from California with a background in sports, dance, and journalism. Anna was crowned Antonia on Saturday, August 13th at the Stuff Casino Weekend at the Palms Casino in Las Vegas. "

We at TTH would like to congratulate the runner-up also, our very own Neddie Seagoon, whose bid was tossed out after he goosed another female candidate and ran away giggling, losing his female disguise on the way. After all, it's not hard to look like a halfling female, nor is it a stretch for halflings to goose anyone.
Yes, you can go see the pics on Everquest 2's Quest for Antonia here. Like hobos at a Mercedes Benz dealership you are, sheesh.

  • Fancy pictures of a game you can't play yet.
The official Tabula Rasa site has posted some new screenshots of the upcoming Richard Garriott title. Fanbois of Lord British have begun tatooing the following on their buttocks:

"This is a test of the emergency description system. Had the folks responsible for posting the Tabula Rasa screenshots actually posted descriptions you would have been able to read them here. Remember, this is only a test. Had there been a real emergency we would be watching Stargate SG-1 and missing it anyway. "

  • Roper? I can't even find her.
GCDC has posted an interview with Flagship Studios, Bill Roper. Angry that an interview was done that didn't include him Tom Cruise looked first to his minder and then said:

" This is the first year I have really had the opportunity to travel to development conferences in other parts of the world. Learning what the interests and challenges are in each different development community not only gives me more insight into our industry as a whole, but also lets me share some of our US-based concepts with others. It is this exchange of issues, ideas and solutions that makes being a part of this year’s GCDC quite special. "

  • Developer's Blog, Stardate 44804
Ken Henderson, the art director of Star Trek Online has posted a developer's blog. Scantily clad, blue, alien women were seen exiting Ken's office prior to the posting of the blog. Using our universal translator we deduced that they may have said this:

"Ken Henderson here, the Art Director for Star Trek Online. As I’m sure you’ve heard about by now we’ve released some imagery that gives a peak into how we’re evolving the look of Star Trek. We were excited to share the images on Friday in Las Vegas and are equally excited to be posting them on our BLOG. It was great talking with some of you at the convention and getting your reactions first hand. Look for more updates of this nature as the project progresses. I’ll also be throwing up a non-image entry from time to time just to share some thoughts or pose some questions. Either way, the BLOG will be a great resource for the projects Art Direction from here on out. Before I dive in I want to acknowledge all the help and guidance from Paramount as we’ve progressed. Harry Lang has been a great source of encouragement and enthusiasm for the work that we have been doing and having his input in this process has been invaluable. "

  • Roper? I can't even catch her!
Bill Roper of Flagship Studios has predicted a major PC games market ship in his keynote address at "European E3". Howard Stern has just announced that he is firmly against PC games. He claims he has never been Politically Correct and he isn't about to start now because some !@#$wad at some geek convention says it's the way to go:

" Flagship Studios president Bill Roper has heavily backed PC development in his Games Convention keynote and placed connectivity and multiple-platform development at the centre of his vision for the industry's future. "
