  • So tell me a little bit about your career history, EverQuest 2...
If games had resumes, this one would be impressive. Ryan "Blackguard" Shwayder, SOE's EQ2 Community Manager, lists the incredible amount of content added to the game in the past year:

Since launch, an enormous amount of content has been added to EverQuest II at no additional cost to EverQuest II subscribers. In addition to changes that made the game more fun for soloists and group players alike, more than 1100 quests have been added to the game since launch on November 8th. We've added more than 1200 new items to the game, including more craftable items for tradeskillers, and more loot around the world. Almost 400 new spells have been added and we've worked diligently to make sure our spell effects are as eye-catching as they are powerful. Recently, we added 8 new areas to the world, so there are now well over 100 zones in the world of EverQuest II to explore.

So Blizzard & World of Warcraft, where's the beef? All you've made are promises so far. ( I have to try and bring balance to the force, you see.) Check out EverQuest 2's new content in the year since launch and the official site.

  • Santa is checking his MMOG gift list. Are you a Taruen or a super villain?
Seattle Weekly has posted a MMOG Gift Guide written to explain massively multiplayer games are to the uninitiated. Notably absent from their list was EverQuest 2, although Legend of Mir and Ultima Online did make the list.

" As the so-called real world crumbles around us, things have been looking up in Azeroth. Jaina Proudmoor and the battered survivors of the Alliance against the Horde had barely established a tenuous foothold in south Kalimdor when their colony was threatened by Jaina's dad, the Mad Admiral, determined to wipe out her new allies, the Orcs. After much soul-searching, Jaina decided her honor counted for more than filial affection, so she helped the armies of Thrall whup the attacking fleet and earn free passage back home to Theramore. "

  • When forum trolls write reviews...
CVG gives EQ2's "Desert of Flames" expansion at score of 75 / 100, citing a lack of polish (but there are plenty of other Europeans playing, har har!) and a continuance of SOE's "feather ruffling" tradition of Combat Changes. Let the nastiness commence:

Poor old Sony. Given the massive debacle that was the Star Wars Galaxies Combat Upgrade, you'd think that its developer - Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) - would steer clear of using that phrase ever again. Not so. With the release of the Desert Of Flames expansion for the underrated EverQuest II - a game easily as enjoyable as WOW, but with half the calories... Sorry, I mean players - came an all-singing, all-dancing, all-existing player-base-annoying 'combat upgrade'. SOE must be cursed.

Yea, they're pretty much being populist WoW bastages about it. Check out CVG's EverQuest 2: Desert of Flames review for more ganky ire.

  • And you thought your MMO was hardcore.
WarCry has a very interesting read on Project Entropia's economy. PE is the first game with an real life economy- you can "buy in" for in-game cash using real dollars, and "cash out" using the same exchange rate.

I saw miners hitting deposits worth 5,000 PEDs. And that's just the materials value. If they make it into stuff, who knows how much they’ll make? Crafters were making a couple hundred bucks right in front of me, throwing together tools worth $50-plus. Quick perusing of the auction house revealed items actually going for 4,000 PEDs. Sure, you start crafting in EVE, maybe you make enough ISK to sell to IGE for beer money, but $400 bucks? Sign me up for mining and crafting in Project Entropia.

There’s even PvP zones and, yes, it’s old school. You may actually lose items if you wander into a PvP zones. Consequently, PvP combat has actual cash rewards and penalties. Imagine ganking a guy and making ten bucks on his gear. Now imagine being ganked and losing your hundred dollar mining doodad. That’s what I call serious PvP. When a jerk with a dagger might cost you your rent money, it’s hardcore.

I agree. Check out Warcry's Project Entropia editorial.

  • GameSpy rolls for initiative.
DDO is still in the "hands on" phase of previewing (followed by the "OMG roxxz0rz!" preview phase, which is followed by the "preview" preview phase... something like that), and GameSpy doesn't disappoint.

After all, what better genre than the massively multiplayer online role-playing game to bring the "role" back into what usually becomes merely an endless treadmill of players searching for the bigger, better magical doodad? Having been lost in the D&D Online beta for about three days now, I'm seriously impressed at how well Turbine is translating not just the mechanics, but the very "feel" of classic D&D gameplay to the MMO format.

No dice bag needed to view GameSpy's "hands on" preview of Dungeons & Dragons Online: Stormreach.

  • More late nights with Conan.

IGN has posted an Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures interview featuring Gaute Godager and focusing on turning a license into a game.

" Age of Conan - Hyborian Adventures is Funcom's contribution to a revival of the property that includes both a movie and an animated film along with new novels, a comic series, collectible toys and more. Described as an online action RPG, its aim is to bring together a story-driven single-player experience and a massively multiplayer end game, both capturing the classic swords and sorcery feeling as well as the lush, dark, brutally violent and not always politically correct nature of the franchise. The titular hero's grip on the Aquilonian throne has become tenuous, with ancient evils threatening to throw the realm into chaos. The time is ripe for those with the strength and will to carve out their own destinies. As for our fate, we were favored by fortune in finding Game Director Gaute Godager willing to answer our questions. "

  • Some fancy Dungeons and Dragons pictures, ironically showing neither a dungeon nor a dragon.

CVG has posted two new Dungeons and Dragons Online screenshots.

" Dungeons & Dragons Online: Stormreach is set on the continent of Xen'drik in the world of Eberron with players questing, adventuring, hitting things with swords and calling people "n00bs" and so on. "
