  • Because only four journals isn't enough.
RPGVault has posted The Saga of Ryzom Journal #5, featuring the Zorai race. Lance Armstrong agreed to come out of retirement, a ballsy move on his part, to join the Zorai race. At the press conference he stated:

" A mysterious place with a history full of secrets, the exotic, organic world of Atys is made up of five distinct bio-diverse ecosystems ranging from parched desert to temperate forest, unspoiled lake lands, lush jungle and the eerie caverns of the Prime Roots. It is populated by four races that are collectively known as homins. Each of these has a different genetically predisposed role, and therefore its own society reflecting its particular values. The Fyros are warriors who maintain a constant vigil in order to protect the planet against its greatest threat, fire. Theirs is a relatively austere culture built upon a strict code of honor. The Matis are decadent aristocrats and skilled biologists dedicated to maintaining the flora surrounding them. The Zorais are mystics, with powers shrouded in secrecy, and the Trykers are playful spirits who seek only freedom. "

  • A chronicle of the The Chronicle.
MMORPG.com has posted a developer written preview of The Chronicle. The preview focuses on the battle system and specifically on the opportunity subsystem of combat. Vin Diesel, the master of combat and of opportunity flexed the muscles in his eyelids and roared:

" I attack you and hit for 22 damage. You attack me and hit for 17 damage. I attack you and miss. You attack me and critically hit for 34 damage. I attack you…
Does the above exchange sound familiar? It probably does, because that’s the way combat works in just about every MMORPG on the market today. In reality, combat is a complex dance of subtle maneuvers, split-second perceptions, and exploiting opportunities, which is why most RPG battles seem so sterile and monotonous by contrast. It’s tough to get excited about a match of dueling calculators, but one of the things The Chronicle is attempting to do is add a new dimension to RPG style combat, putting more emphasis on strategy and timing than just clicking auto attack to find out who has the best damage per second and hit points."

  • 360 to gone in 0 seconds.
GameSpot is reporting that the initial allotment of XBox 360s at both EB Games and their merger partner GameStop has been sold out. If you want a 360 you had best look elsewhere. Ricky of Trailer Park Boys swore repeatedly when he heard the news. Then he swore some more and uttered the following:

"Retailer is first online store to go through its allotment of the next-gen console; other online retailers still have "launch" quantities."

  • Superhero Interrogation.
Boomtown has posted a City of Villains Interview featuring Jack Emmert. It's a good read, covering a lot of ground in a dozen or so questions. We were informed by Atomic Betty's agent that she would not be available to quell the villains in CoV. She is busy chasing a talking cat across the galaxy. They did proclaim the following:

" We smuggled some kryptonite into the food for lead villain at Cryptic Studios, Jack Emmert, and in his weakened state he revealed lots of information... "

  • Apparently, this Irth can be mined for screenshots.

Every site and its brother is getting some exclusive Irth screenshots. The newest set at RPG Vault sport this description:

    - Magic Hat Software's Irth Online is a fantasy-themed persistent state project said to emphasize role-playing and letting players determine their own in-game experience. Officially announced in April, it's currently in beta and targeted to launch within the coming months. The setting is an expansive environment in which a fragile peace exists among three diverse civilizations, the northern Arcadians, swamp-dwelling Morbus and tropical Mezoteks. Key features and elements that seem likely to interest players who prefer open-ended virtual worlds include a free-form storyline and a skill system in which it's said characters can learn any ability without racial or class-based restrictions.

  • Why exactly is it a "gateway" to Hell, and not, oh, a portal or a roadway...an archway perhaps?
Shacknews has some new Hellgate: London screenshots posted for your viewing pleasure. We tricked Steve Gibson into taking our calls, but he was so whacked out on vegetarian crazy food that we couldn't understand a word he mumbled. It went something like this:

"This is a test of the emergency description system. If Shacknews had posted screenshot descriptions they would have been found here. Unfortunately, we are just going to make up stories about what the screenshots are about. One looks like a goat. Another seems to be the picture of a chimpanzee's buttocks and the last looks suspiciously like a GoogleMaps image of Niagara Falls. In the event of a real description emergency you would find us riding the elevator, NOT the stairs. "

  • A ticket for economy please.
The Escapist has posted an Op/Ed titled, We The Avatars that takes a look at the economies in MMOGs and how some of them are attacking the problems froma different vector. Richard Garriott adamantly refused to return our calls, but we did overhear him say this as he gave us the finger:

"Not many gamers I know get too hopped up over the subject of MMOG
economics. Sure, we complain about high prices at the auction house, we
lament the waiting lines for our chosen servers, we disparage
real-money trade, we blather on about "inflation." But when was the last time you checked the Consumer Price Index for your favorite virtual world, or looked to see whether your guild was actually turning a profit these days? "

  • Will "Mondain's Legacy" enliven UO's mundane legacy?

The honorable, eight-year-old granddaddy of MMOs, Ultima Online, recently got a kick in the pants with the recent "Mondain's Legacy" expansion. A handful of developers and designers sat down with RPG Vault to detail its new features.

I think all aspects of Mondain's Legacy were influenced by the community in some form or another. That's a big reason why this expansion has so many different types of things to do. Because our community has lots of different likes and dislikes, we spent many hours trying to best fit community requests into a realistic production schedule.

The hardest part of game development is limiting the number of implemented designs in order fulfill a realistic goal. There are many more things we'd really like to do, but we have to prioritize what we can do within the necessary constraints.

Read through this lengthy UO Q&A at RPG Vault, if you wanna.
