We asked a handpicked group of our elite team of writers to address what they feel is the number one "big picture" issue with their favorite MMO. Their responses are shocking, insightful, pithy, but most of all, different from game to game!

  • What should we name this MMO planet? How about...Irth! Brilliant!

New screenshots are available for the 2005 year ender fantasy MMO "Irth Online" at Stratics. The first is of "a stableboy going to work" - nudge, nudge, say no more, say no more!

Irth Online’s virtual world is populated by three distinct PvP civilizations -- The Arcadians in the snowy north, The Morbus in the southeastern swamps, and The Mezoteks in the tropical southwest – which have a thousand-year history of battling to capture the resources of the others to ensure survival. This persistent state of war inspired peace-loving pilgrims from all three civilizations to form their own civilization, and this fourth civilization in Irth Online is non-PvP, and survives via commerce in lieu of combat. Players join Irth’s history at a period when a fragile truce exists, and determine the course of history of each civilization.

  • Safe sets!

Expansion sets, that is! MMORPG.com gives their take on the 2002 Dark Age of Camelot expansion: "Shrouded Isles" expansion. What struck me: just as Ralphie said in this week's Op/Ed, one MMO (in this case, EverQuest) sets the standard, and then 6 months later you see the other MMOs catching up when they see what "works." Why not let your competitors do your gameplay testing for you, after all?

Creating expansions for MMORPGs has become an art form, it would seem. As the genre begins to settle somewhat, and starts to take on standards learned from aging veterans like Ultima Online and EverQuest, it becomes at once easier to craft an expansion, and tougher to craft a great expansion. A great expansion can keep current players happy for another year, or even bring in new players; a bad expansion can ruin the experience for veterans, and possibly scare off recruits. Mythic, the creators of Dark Age of Camelot, offered up Shrouded Isles in late 2002, a year after the original game’s release. At the time, it seemed like a very thorough expansion, and kept me playing for another year. In hindsight, it seems more like a very safe expansion.

Take a look at the "Dark Age of Camelot: Shrouded Isles" review at MMORPG.com.

  • A Novel About a Game About a Comic.
GameCloud chats with Robert Weinberg about his upcoming novel based on City of Heroes. Stewie Griffin would not comment on the story, but he did drop a load in his pants, smile diabolically and exclaim:

" Many video and PC games have gotten novelizations over the years and the newest one is Cryptic Studios' superhero MMORPG City of Heroes. The first novel, City of Heroes: Web of Arachnos, is due out later this year from publisher CDS Books and Gamecloud got a chance to chat with its veteran novelist and comic book scripter Robert Weinberg. • A Pox on World of Warcraft.
It is rumoured that a disease is sweeping through World of Warcraft. Whether it is intentional or not is still up in the air. Get your penicillin folks. Dustin Hoffman warned everyone that this could happen, but nobody listened. He's warning them again, in a very loud voice, that sounds something like this:

"Apparently there's a plague spreading in World of Warcraft. I can't verify this because I'm back at 30,000 feet"

  • Arrr Matey, Ye Can Be a Beta Pirate.
Flying Labs has announced that the beta registration for Pirates of the Burning Sea is now open. Johnny Depp acted goofy, or at least we think he was acting when he heard the news, shouting:

" Flying Lab Software announced today that in honor of Talk Like A Pirate Day they are opening registration for gamers who want to participate in the upcoming beta test program for Pirates of the Burning Sea, a new massively multiplayer online computer game. Later this fall, approved beta test applicants will join Flying Lab online to exhaustively playtest the game and get it ready for launch this winter. "

  • Searching....Please Wait...
Killer Betties has posted an Op/Ed titled, In Search of the Next EverQuest. Antonia Bayle would not answer our calls, damned Caller ID, but her answering machine did have this message:

"EverQuest was my first MMO and I haven’t found another one that could hold my interest since. I honestly tried to like Final Fantasy XI, Lineage II, City of Heroes, World of Warcraft and Guild Wars—one or two of them even held my attention for a month or two—but nothing has had the staying power or stolen my spare time (and even some time I couldn’t really spare) like EverQuest has. • Can you spare some change (descriptions)?

On EQ2's official site, the developers highlight some of the more blaring changes to characters' spells and combat abilities in the wake of the recent "Combat Changes." Now everyone can learn about the fun, new abilities no one really wanted!

In this article, we take a closer look at how some of the abilities have changed for each class and how to integrate them with your play style. Utilizing the tactics and knowledge within and combining that with in-game experimentation and ability analysis will lead to success with your character.

I guess the changes are good for us even if not particularly pleasant for some classes, like the Vegan junk our significant others might force upon our meat- and beer-craven mouths. See the Combat and Spell Changes at the Everquest 2 official site!

  • Questions? Answers.
GamersInfo has posted a Horizons interview featuring Roger Hantz. Anne McCaffrey refused to comment on the use of dragons, but did say this:

" Roger "Rawdge" Hantz joined the Tulga team last year and has had a hand in helping to stabilize the online world of Horizons and solidify the content since his first days on the job. As a Content and System Designer, Roger is responsible for breaking down each item/program to be placed in the game, planning its development cycle and then implementing that cycle. Without him, there would be no path to follow. A die-hard fan of the game, Roger is unique in that he brings to the team a player's perspective. Along with that, he has a talent for writing. Once certain areas of the game stabilize he can help flesh out the long-requested lore. "
