  • Relationships and Group Level Differences...
This Week's Ask Ethec on the TTH Everquest 2 site features advice for a young lady struggling to keep up level-wise with her boyfriend. She's wondering about the often-misanswered question of how group level differences work and specifically how high a level she can group with. As usual, Ethec's got the lowdown!

"Outside of normal groups, SOE has provided a way for beaus and spouses to play together without the aforementioned frustrations of the "level leash." By "mentoring" you, he can drop down to your level while not making changes to his equipment, which also scales in level. He will have to change out his spell hotbars to match what he would have used at your level, but hey, he can give you a hand with completing your tasks when you're in a mood to play. Some guys I know create "alts" (alternate characters) for the sole purpose of keeping a character in sync with their gal's toon (or vice versa- guys keeping up with gals- as the case might be!)."

Tough love and straight answers from a halfling healer (and part-time therapist) here!

  • Foolish Biomek, You Shall Not Ensconce My Pinto in Flames!
Auto Assault begins its series of beta diaries: "Transmissions from the Central Wasteland." Real stories from real people just like you and me, except that they're driving around trying to blow each other up.

"Don't you listen to those that talk about the "lost technology" of the Old World , young Mutant. We Shamans know that the only tech that's lost is what we haven't gone out and dug out of the wastelands yet. No, we won't be needing a shovel. I'll show you how to get what you need to fix this heap with just a Vindicator, some fancy driving, and an unwitting pack o' Scavs. Hop in!"

  • Yummy Clusters of Server Goodness
Mythic Entertainment announced a new clustering schema. Clusters are a way of preserving a server's home community for aged MMOGs while making the Realm vs. Realm and Frontier zones (areas where high level adventurers roam) one zone for 2-4 servers.

"Guinevere will be clustered with Nimue and Percival... Merlin will be clustered with Palomides, Bors, and Gawaine... Lancelot will be clustered with Iseult, Kay, and Pellinor. Galahad/Morgan le Fay will be clustered with Bedevere, Igraine, and Tristan."

Go here to see a timetable for these moves.

  • New Deskpaper from Guild Wars
We call it "Deskpaper" around here, because it goes on your desktop, of course, silly mortal. Featured deskpaper this week is a smear of light. But not just any smear of light...

"The wallpaper image for this week offers one of several early concept images of the Hall of Heroes."

  • Arrrr, have you ever been to the Burning Sea Billy?
MMORPG has posted a Pirates of the Burning Sea developer diary featuring Russell Williams. Do they have boats made of asbestos in the burning sea?:

"Since I last wrote, we finished our previous milestone and have started a new one. Our milestones are usually 6-8 weeks, but this one is a bit shorter. The reason for this is PAX (pennyarcadeexpo.com), the game show in Seattle being run by the Penny Arcade guys. We’re looking forward to meeting our fans who’ve been coming by the forums, and we’ll be out in force staffing our demo stations. This is the first time that we’ve shown the game to the general public, and this milestone is all about finishing off the basics and putting a nice sheen of polish on top of it."

  • DDO Dev Diary Discovered.
The official Dungeons and Dragons Online site has posted a developer's diary featuring Zyrca. The diary is titled, 'Things I've Seen That Made Me Smile'. Strangely absent from the list was coming to work without pants on. That's always a real hoot around here:

"I'm Zyrca, I've been here at Turbine a couple of years now. When I got here, I started out working on the live team on Asheron's Call. If you played Asheron's Call, you may remember me from such things as the "Violet Ball" and for setting up the code that would set my monitor on fire should a 100% crafting interaction fail. Now I'm a game systems engineer helping build Dungeons & Dragons Online. Today, I want to share some of the things I've seen and heard while working on DDO that brought a smile to my lips."

  • Finally, we'll see it on XBox 360. Finally.
Game Informer has an interview with Hiromichi Tanaka discussing Final Fantasy XI on the XBox 360. Going into my local EBGames store and asking for Final Fantasy XI (I pronounced it Final Fantasy Zi) over and over was fun yesterday. Small joys:

"As part of our Japan Extravaganza V 1.0, we talked to Hiroichi Tanaka, senior vice president of software development at Square Enix, about Final Fantasy XI for the Xbox 360. Find out why we should buy the game all over again, what’s new with the Xbox 360 version, and how FFXI is going to accomplish something that’s never been done before in the history of video games."
