  • His name is Andrew Binder and his mission? To Annihilate all coding bugs in existence! This new test lead for Flying Lab Software makes his Developer's Log Debut with .. er... flying colors?

I suppose an introduction is in order. My name is Andrew Binder and I am the test lead here at Flying Lab Software. I have been testing, test-leading, test-managing, games for a little over 12-years now. I cut my QA teeth at Dynamix in Eugene, Oregon (Aces of the Pacific, Red Baron, Trophy Bass, Starsiege, Tribes, etc), took a turn at Tiburon (Madden 00), swung through Microsoft (Zoo Tycoon franchise), and now I have come to hang my tricorn here at FLS. I have likely been a geek and a technophile from the day I opened my eyes and could recognize the beauty that is a blinking LED. My mother humored my need and through her and the rest of my family I got the original Atari PONG, a Magnavox Odyssey, the Atari 2600, a VIC-20, and a 386-DX25 as my first "modern" computer while I was in college. My contributions (via paper routes and other odd jobs) to this mess were a Colecovision, a Vectrex, and my pride-and-joy Apple IIe. I won’t even try to list the various and sundry blinking, building, battery operated, toys that used to lie around our house in various states of dismantlement (I was *that* kid who would get a $100 toy for Christmas, spend one day playing with it, and months taking it apart and then trying to put it back together- usually unsuccessfully. Personality clue – I’ve been in test for 12-years). Now that I am older and “wiser” I try to reserve my destructive tendencies for software, and the odd home repair job (sorry honey...).

He's an entertaining guy. You should read the rest.

  • There is a new piece in the Developer Corner on the official EverQuest 2 site.

    The Rise of the Orcs
Kerya stayed low and close to the trunk of the tree, ensuring she wasn't in the orcs' line of sight. It had taken considerable study of their crude language to be able to make sense of their guttural grunts and snorts.

"Stronger now!" the larger orc said to the smaller ones. "This new armor will strike fear into the Militia! They will fall before the might of the Bloodskull!"

"The treaty with our Rujarkian brothers was wise, General Vhar'Taug," one of the smaller orcs responded. "With this superior equipment, Freeport will soon be ours for the taking."

  • WooOOOOooo! For all of us schleps that were too lazy to pre-order Auto Assault here is some good news!

AUSTIN, Texas, April 13, 2006—NCsoft® North America announced today that Auto Assault® launched commercial service in North America, Europe and other select markets worldwide. Developed by Colorado-based developer, NetDevil®, LTD, Auto Assault is the first massively multiplayer online (MMO) game set in a post-apocalyptic world featuring vehicle combat on an epic scale and fully destructible environments.

Auto Assault is available at retailers in North America at an expected price of US$49.99. The Limited Edition, which includes a headset to utilize the game’s voice chat system and a game soundtrack CD, will be available for an expected price of US$59.99. Both the standard and Limited editions of the game include the first month of online game play. After the first month, players will be charged a monthly subscription fee of US$14.99. Sixty-day game time cards will also be available at many North American retailers for an expected price of US$29.99.

In Auto Assault, players choose from three races and venture into a post-apocalyptic Earth wreaking havoc and vying for control over the few resources left. Players can design their characters and customize many different vehicle chassis to make their own unique fleet of death machines. Players may go on missions with others or on their own, craft unique items, and participate in player-versus-player combat via the arena system and contested outpost battles. No matter what they are doing, players are encouraged to interact with the game world by blasting through buildings, leveling towns and destroying just about everything they see.

“Auto Assault is a truly unique game, and a fantastic addition to our catalog,” said Robert Garriott, CEO of NCsoft North America. “There is nothing like it in the MMO game space – it is easy to play, fast, and very fun. Auto Assault gives players the best of action games, the best of role-playing games and a super-cool world to discover and destroy.”

The release of Auto Assault represents both a continuation of NCsoft’s efforts to provide gamers many compelling products to play online, and the beginning of another great service with free content updates and expansions in the years to come. Additionally, a veteran rewards program has been put in place for players who subscribe to Auto Assault within the first thirty days of service.

If you're bored with all of the fantasy type games, this is the game for you!

  • SOE salutes the troops

SOE has just announced a new contest for troops serving abroad and their families in conjunction with the release of their new PSP title - Field Commander. I know, I know, it's not an MMORPG - but I thought this was a pretty cool contest.

Families of service members need only submit a brief essay to win some very cool prizes, including a $500 Sony Style gift card, a handful of Sony retail titles and, my personal raison d'etre, T-shirts! Check it out:

Send an essay (no more than 250 words) to FieldCommanderPromo@soe.sony.com that details you or your nominee’s current role in the Armed Forces, their gaming habits and why you deserve to win. Five winners will be chosen.

  • Take me out to the pwnage...

How about an MMO where you take the place of a baseball player, seeing the game from his perspective from the first pitch to the final, tobacco-laden spit? That, or something very close, is at your fingertips with Ultimate Baseball Online, a game just officially announced by developer Netamin. What's more, the game's impressing people - American sports network ESPN has apparently signed for the UBO/Netamin team. Here's more:

"Ultimate Baseball Online brings the 'team experience' to the sports gaming experience," said Andy Wang, president of Netamin. "A team of people playing against another team of real people is a much different experience than one person sitting alone in front of a console game playing against a computer."

To ensure a true baseball player experience, Darrell Evans, a two-time Major League All-Star ('73 & '74) and World Series winner (1985), serves as UBO's principle baseball consultant. "Ultimate Baseball Online, for me, is the closest thing to being back on the playing field," said Darrell Evans. "The mental part of baseball has finally been captured. UBO will give players a great appreciation for the fine points of each position, as well as an understanding of the teamwork that is involved in playing the sport of baseball successfully."

Baseball and birdcrap on the car - sure signs of Spring. Don't dare go outdoors - MMOs need you! Instead, check out Ultimate Baseball Online's official site. Did we mention the game is a free download?

  • Dun dun DUN! Blizzard bannage.

According to the World of Warcraft community site, Blizzard's banned 5,400 accounts and suspended 10,700 more since patch 1.10 went live the week before last. The reason? Widespread looting and violence caused by the Blizzard's April Fools' Day jokes? Nope.

Many account closures come as the direct result of tips reported to our GMs in game or emailed to hacks@blizzard.com by legitimate World of Warcraft players. If you suspect that a World of Warcraft player is using an illegal third-party program to farm gold or items, or is otherwise violating our Terms of Use, please report the suspected infraction via one of the means listed above. All reports will be investigated, and those that prove false will not result in corrective action.

Razor (over at Warcry) believes this will only result in 5,400 more copies of WoW being purchased. If he's right, what a deliciously Machiavellian marketing ploy.

  • A Critical Hit?

Though reviews of Dungeons & Dragons Online: Stormreach have been guardedly positive, many in the industry are wondering how well certain game elements (e.g. "forced" grouping to make much real progress, a short yet very steep climb to the 10th and highest level) were translating into pageviews. According Tom Nichols, Turbine's VP of Marketing, business is "rolling" along.

Nichols couldn't disclose the number of people that have bought the game and are currently subscribing, but he did confirm that the game was the largest in Turbine's history. "We expected success for Dungeons and Dragons Online: Stormreach (DDO) because it represents a new paradigm for the MMO genre with unique features including party-based quests, integrated voice chat, real-time action combat, and award winning graphics that recreate the essence of the classic pen-and-paper roleplaying experience," said Nichols. "The response to the game has been terrific."

Enjoy the rest of this interesting DDO interview (it's not all business!) at GameDaily BIZ.

  • Any news is good news right now for Tabula Rasa. So with that said you can imagine how excited I was when I got my interview back.

How are things coming along with TR? What are some of the most recent developments in the project?

Starr: Things are coming along very nicely. Most of our work of late has been on content. We are almost complete with our first planet, the forest world of Foreas and have started on the second planet, the harsh volcanic world of Arieki. We have also been progressing through the character class tree and are finishing up the second tier as we speak. We have tons of new creatures, weapons, wearables, etc. that we will be showing off starting at E3 this year.

Want to know more? You'll have to read the interview!

  • SOE's Executive Exodus Continues

NextGen is reporting that Cindy Armstrong, former VP for Business Development at Sony Online Entertainment, has been confirmed as the new CEO for Webzen America.

Armstrong added, "Joining Webzen America as the company is on the verge of becoming a powerhouse online games company in this market is an exciting and incredible opportunity." The new CEO has 15 years of online entertainment experience with companies including SOE, Nintendo and Activision.

Long a force in Asian MMO gaming, Webzen hopes to go center stage in the western hemisphere with upcoming titles like SUN, Huxley, and APB. But given the divergent cultural expectations of MMOs on different sides of the globe (the more competitive east vs. the more cooperative west), Armstrong has plenty of work cut out for her.
