  • Three Rings Announces 2 Millionth Registered Pirate For Its Online World

This exciting press release was issued today to celebrate this milestone for Puzzle Pirates...

San Francisco, CA - July 27, 2006 - Three Rings Design, Inc., a premier developer of multi-player online casual games, announced today that it has crossed over the 2 million registration mark for its popular online game "Puzzle Pirates."

The company has seen a dramatic increase in registrations with its shift from subscription pricing to a "free-to-play" model that includes the option of purchasing micro-currency. Players can then spend their micro-currency on in-game upgrades and additional content.

"Three Rings is leading the charge for micro-currency in the US market, and reaching 2 million registrations confirms our success. We believe that this model represents the future for online entertainment," said Daniel James, Three Rings' CEO. "Our inspiration continues to be the Korean market, where 'free to play, pay for item' is the ubiquitous business model for online games. As the US market matures to meet Korea, we intend to keep leading the way."

The company is riding some powerful trends in digital entertainment - the popularity of casual games, a move towards the massively multiplayer, and the ascent of digital distribution. With the shift to "freemium" pricing, the company is rapidly growing its user base and recently closed a Series B financing to accelerate the distribution and development of its games.

Additionally, the company recently released the beta version of a new game, "Bang! Howdy," a multiplayer online tactical strategy game for the PC which uses the same payment structure and online distribution model.

  • "Wyr Would You Like to Go Today?" has the latest developer journal for Hero's Journey. In this one Jay Miller takes a look at Wyr.

When I think of Wyr, my mind doesn't immediately lock onto the mechanics of the things. I don't think about sockets or customization, buffs or abilities, or how awesome it'll be to walk around guttin' Ukar with a sword that has little chunks of fallen heroes socketed to it. No, when I hear the word Wyr, I get all misty-eyed because I know they came as blood payment for all those poor, unfortunate souls who died during the Sundering.

Y'see, Wyr are far more than just wicked-cool trinkets you carry around with you to make you stronger, faster, and glowier than ever. They’re living history, magically-infused kernels of Elanthia’s past and the embodiment of Elanthia herself. They take on the voice of a planet so riddled with tragic history that you'd be hard pressed to take a single step in any direction without stepping all over the bones of somebody's ancestors. Wyr are the voice of the planet, and they scream bloody murder.

  • Innovative new system for item rewards

Dusktreaders has released information on thier innovative item reward system that reportedly will not penalize players based on if they choose to group or solo mainly.

Treasure rewards will now be based on the effort players exert.

For example, if a solo player beats a monster that is very hard for her, she will receive the same quality of gear reward as three players who beat a monster that is very hard for them. Both the solo player and the group player worked hard, and they both deserve a reward that shows it.

  • Exploring Middle-earth: The Dead Spire

Today brings us a new installment of Exploring Middle-earth. The official site is updated today with a look at The Dead Spire.

The Barrow-downs is a name of dread, but it was not always so. The barrows were originally raised by the Edain, Men of ancient days, and later kept and revered by the Dúnedain of Cardolan. In the Third Age, a great plague swept across Middle-earth, out of Mordor, and the last vestiges of the Men of Cardolan perished. The Witch-king of Angmar sent evil spirits out of Angmar and Rhudaur to stir the bones of the dead and make the Barrow-downs the place of dread and evil it has become.

  • MMORPG Online Game for Mobile - Commercial Service Begins in South Korea

A press release was issued this morning that is lofting more than a few brows across the MMO community. Close your eyes and imagine if you will a day where you can play an
MMO on your cell phone. Think that is pie in the sky dreaming? Not anymore...keep reading.

Com2uS begins subscription service for "IMO: The World of Magic," Korea's first wireless MMORPG, following a successful open beta test.

Seoul, July 2006 – Com2uS has announced the start of paid subscription for its MMORPG (massive multiplayer online RPG) for mobile phones from July 18. “IMO: The World of Magic” launched in Korea on June 8 and has been available for free during its open beta test. The game represents the first commercial release of an MMO game in Korea for mobile and is priced at 4,900 (around $5), which includes all network charges.

IMO: The World of Magic puts players into the real-time online world of Inotia. The game is for mobile, but it offers gamers much of what they’ve come to expect from MMORPG on the PC. In an MMORPG, users enter a persistent, real-time online world, where they go on quests, team up with other players to fight monsters, collect items, fight against other players, and try to level up their characters. Com2uS added additional quests, dungeons, and party play options to mark the start of the paid subscription service. Future content for IMO will be added in episodes, the current instalment being, “Episode 1: The Wingfriel Island.”

IMO brings gamers a great MMORPG experience on mobile, as well as offering a gaming experience and subscription plan well suited to the limitations of a mobile phone platform. Com2uS is planning to add functionality that will take advantage of the mobile platform itself: for example, utilizing SMS in the game.

Com2uS hosts the online infrastructure of IMO with 6 servers, each server supporting around 500 simultaneous users. The number of servers could increase as more users sign up to play. To date, the game regularly supports 1,000 simultaneous users.

“MMORPG are immensely popular in Korea on the PC and helped give birth to one of the most vibrant gaming cultures in the world,” commented Ji-young Park, CEO of Com2uS. “We are very pleased to have launched the first commercial MMORPG service for mobile in Korea.”
