  • The company went bankrupt in 2004 due to a line of unsuccessful games and bad financial management. According to GameCloud, they're back... This time they're planning on publishing Asian MMO's in the Western Hemisphere.

This is a very interesting occurrance. I don't believe that to date there has been one single AMMORPG that has been extremely successful in the American market. However, publishers are still bringing them over. It's a different design. More Grind. Interesting.

    I wish them much luck!

  • This is probably the biggest news today. I could post it and wander off and it would be enough. Red 5, the key members who were behind Blizzard's World of Warcraft, signed an exclusive deal with Webzen to publish the yet untitled property in development.

SEOUL – Feb. 28, 2006 – Global online entertainment company WEBZEN, Inc. (NASDAQ: WZEN) today announced that it has signed an exclusive worldwide agreement with U.S.-based Red 5 Studios, Inc. to publish a new MMOG property. The contract was executed today at WEBZEN’s headquarters in Seoul.

Creating tremendous industry buzz and anticipation since the company’s inception in September 2005, Red 5 Studios was formed by key members behind Blizzard Entertainment®’s World of WarCraft®, including the game’s Team Lead Mark Kern and Art Director William Petras and Online Director for Asia, Taewon Yoon.

“WEBZEN and Red 5 Studios share the same vision and passion to create next generation online games that can successfully suit the tastes and demands of gamers worldwide,” said Nam Ju Kim, CEO, WEBZEN, Inc. “We are confident that projects such as these will help WEBZEN reach its goal of becoming a top global online games publisher.”

The core members at Red 5 studios have proven their development prowess in launching successful online game properties such as Diablo II, Starcraft series and Warcraft III on a global scale. As such, WEBZEN is being heralded for obtaining the company’s promising new game property, which is primed to deliver worldwide market appeal. For WEBZEN, the publishing deal is an important component to its mid-and long-term objective of building a world-class games portfolio.

“WEBZEN offers the optimal environment for developing games, with its world-class technology and overall expertise in online game entertainment,” said Mark Kern, President and CEO, Red 5 Studios. “WEBZEN is becoming a huge force in the global online games marketplace. Their commitment and determination partnered with our unique game concept is a winning combination for a blockbuster title.”

The new game from Red 5 Studios is in its initial stages of development, and more details on the title will be released at a later

The question on everyone's mind is - Will it be as successful or as good as WoW? I'm curious to see.

  • Deodatus is back at it again. Where has he been all this time? What's going on? Read here to find out.

Regardless of the obvious lack of Captain Crunch around here, I have just finished the last pieces of my project today and sent it off to be integrated into a larger piece of the pie – so to speak. That said, I am happy to tell you that even though I’ve not been able to get you the second part of Stieg’s interview – I swear it is coming, Stieg just has been busy or gone, or I’ve been out – I can tell you that this week we will be re-launching the website with tons of information and we will be announcing our publisher.

Holy Caesar salad, that means things are on track! Speaking of on track, Alpha 2 officially ends next week, so I’ll continue to keep you posted on that. We have made enormous strides in stability, overall graphical sexiness, gameplay, and game mechanics. I think you can all agree that the earlier screenshots you saw pale in comparison to the shots we’ve been posting lately. Not only that, but you’ll be able to see a lot of neat things coming up next week when much more is made public! ;)

WOooOooOOOOoo! Perpetual is quickly becoming my favorite developer. They're got great sense of humor and they're putting out two games that I get googely eyed over.

  • New contest for Chronicles of Spellborn available

We've got a new contest today for all you aspiring photo editors! The first of a series of editing contests, this one deals with our beloved modeller and artist: Pestibug. We've got three high resolution pictures available:

    The rules are simple:

    1. You must use one of these three photos as a base.
    2. We accept one entry per user.
    3. The content of all photos must be related to TCoS.
    4. All entries have to be in before March 6 (next Monday) at noon GMT
    5. The final version must be no larger than 250k. (NOTE: We provide you the hi res versions to work with, but we want smaller versions in return.)
    6. No photo containing "inappropriate" content will be chosen as a winner. (We leave it to you to figure out what that means, but if we can't display the picture, we won't choose you.
    7. Only photos sent to webmaster@tcos.com with "Picture Contest" as subject and NOT displayed elsewhere will be considered. (Do not post your entries on the forums or link them to others until after the contest winner has been announced.)

All of the photos will be judged by assorted developers. The favorite photo will be announced as our first winner, and the prize they receive will include: a TCoS t-shirt, their photo added to the permanent gallery, and they get to pick their "top 3" developers (one of which will be chosen by us) to be the subject of the next editing contest!

What are you waiting for? Get editing and send in your best work!

Go to the official site to find out more.

  • At every turn it seems like I reveal a little more of my geekiness without being able to stop myself. Anyone who knows me knows that I love DC Comics. Favorite GNs Are Kingdom Come and The Dark Knight Returns. I have other favorites. I'm really stoked that Hal Jordan was brought back etc. etc. and yes.. I LOVE Aquaman. Snicker at me as you will but that won't change my fandom of the man in green tights. He's multi-dimensional.

So, the giants are battling it out. Microsoft has the Marvel rights and SOE now has the DC rights. Sure Marvel is much more popular right now because they've been able to control the quality of their movies as well as a new depth with their books. DC on the other hand has had a really bad bad wrap. With WB owning DC, they haven't had the same choices concerning their properties. All we have to do is look at the last Clooney Batman movie to see that my favorite heroes are in serious trouble.

I was worried when I heard that Sony was taking on the project. Very, very worried. However, all may not be lost! 1Up is reporting that Jim Lee is joining the crew.

Of his new role as Executive Creative Director on the title, Lee said in a phone interview, "I'm guiding the ship to make sure the game feels like the DC universe. I'll be intimately involved for the next several years."

Jim is also a MMO fan. If done correctly, this could be one monster of a game. I'm excited and yet terrified. It's like watching a train wreck. You just can't look away.
