  • WoW for Noobs.
GamerGod has posted the second part of their World of Warcraft Guide for New Players. Seriously though, how much easier can a game get? Sure there are some new players who maybe have zero clue, but guesh folks. If you can't play WoW out of the box it's time to head back to watching Gilligan's Island re-runs:

"This is part two of the Gamergod guide to World of Warcraft (WoW) for new players. In this part we are going to talk about quests. Quests are a major feature of WoW; they serve as a guide leading you through the game. There are over 4,000 of them in the game, and you can level from 1 to 60 doing nothing but quests if you like."

  • Relationships and Group Level Differences...
This Week's Ask Ethec on the TTH Everquest 2 site features advice for a young lady struggling to keep up level-wise with her boyfriend. She's wondering about the often-misanswered question of how group level differences work and specifically how high a level she can group with. As usual, Ethec's got the lowdown!

"Outside of normal groups, SOE has provided a way for beaus and spouses to play together without the aforementioned frustrations of the "level leash." By "mentoring" you, he can drop down to your level while not making changes to his equipment, which also scales in level. He will have to change out his spell hotbars to match what he would have used at your level, but hey, he can give you a hand with completing your tasks when you're in a mood to play. Some guys I know create "alts" (alternate characters) for the sole purpose of keeping a character in sync with their gal's toon (or vice versa- guys keeping up with gals- as the case might be!)."

  • Yummy Clusters of Server Goodness
Mythic Entertainment announced a new clustering schema. Clusters are a way of preserving a server's home community for aged MMOGs while making the Realm vs. Realm and Frontier zones (areas where high level adventurers roam) one zone for 2-4 servers.

"Guinevere will be clustered with Nimue and Percival... Merlin will be clustered with Palomides, Bors, and Gawaine... Lancelot will be clustered with Iseult, Kay, and Pellinor. Galahad/Morgan le Fay will be clustered with Bedevere, Igraine, and Tristan."

We call it "Deskpaper" around here, because it goes on your desktop, of course, silly mortal. Featured deskpaper this week is a smear of light. But not just any smear of light...

  • The Ad Driven Model: the WTG for Elderly MMOGs?
Gamer God weighs in on Anarchy Online's recent announcement that the 4-year old MMOG will now be cost-free to gamers worldwide. SOE executives reportedly had a good belly laugh at the announcement, as they continue to reap steady, substantive profits from comparatively ancient 6-year-old EQLive subscriptions.

" Funcom announced that the advertisements will now expand to something that resembles a 15 second commercial spot on television. We will have streaming audio and video in the game as well as the billboards in exchange for a free client, which is a step in the direction of a game supported entirely by advertisements.

Will this cause a trend in the MMOG industry toward games offering free play at the long end of their shelf life to keep people playing and money coming in? Will a company attempt a fully free game supported by advertising? Should someone try this? "

  • Clan Bro Makes an Impact in Guild Wars
NC Soft chose the European-based Clan Brotherhood as its Guild of the Week this week. Twitch gamers might recognize the title from other online tactical and shooter titles, and yes, it's the same guys. It's rumored that Clan Bro once challenged Clan Ya-Ya Sisterhood to a Team Arena, but Ya-Ya backed out for reasons that remain a secret.

"Clan Brotherhood members follow four guiding principles and rules. Firstly, all members must work to foster harmony and an enjoyable atmosphere at all times. Secondly, it is important to seek out fun in the game; the guild believes that losing a closely fought match against a difficult opponent yields more enjoyment than seeking to win at all costs. Thirdly, any form of cheating or exploiting is strictly prohibited. Finally, members are expected to act in a mature and respectful way at all times. Along with these principles, the guild feels that experience playing together as a team is more valuable than the skill of any individual member.
The Bro guild is active in the European PvP community, where they participate in the Erste deutsche Guild Wars Liga and will be fielding a team for the Electronic Sports League's 8on8 Guild-versus-Guild Opening Cup. While many Bro members seek competitive gameplay in Guild Wars, others prefer to pursue cooperative play, completing missions and quests, and exploring the world of Tyria. Members do not trade internally; instead they "gift" appropriate items freely, knowing the favor will be returned at a later date."
