Stargate Worlds + World of Warcraft

  • The WoW Effect

A lot of MMORPGs these days are copying WoW, but what if WoW was to copy them? For this week's common content we look at WoW's effect on the industry and what would happen if WoW were to emulate some of its competition!

"What if WoW emulated DDO's dungeon loot system? Say you were in a five man instance and you come up to a treasure chest. Your Rogue makes sure it isn't trapped and you open it. Everyone (or almost everyone) in your party gets a piece of gear that is both useful and for their class. Its bind on pickup, of course, so they can't share but everyone comes out satisfied. This would make five man instances way more interesting then they currently are."

  • Blizzard Heading To Court?

Markee Dragon has a post on their site that talks about a brewing battle between WoW Glider and Blizzard.

We knew it had to happen one of these days with a bot program. Bots currently exist for most all Massive Multiplayer games. The biggest MMORPG in North America is World of Warcraft. WoW Glider is a 3rd party application that allows you to control your character in game without having to be present at your computer. It allows you to have your character go out and gain skills hunting monsters and it allows you to loot them. WoW Glider will pick up the items in game and put them in your pack. WoW Glider was launched June 5th 2005. Since that time it has become hugely popular with players of the game.

  • Azuremyst Isle – Draenei Starting Area Guide

Ten Ton Hammer takes a look at the new Draenei race from the Burning Crusade expansion and the area in which they start their adventures in Azeroth.

“The starting area of the draenei is the mystic Azuremyst Isle, located in the Veiled Sea to the Southwest of Teldrassil. Shipwrecked, the Draenei are busy studying the region they have found themselves in and tending to the survivors of the crash. As an able-bodied survivor, you are expected to help in the relief efforts. The crash has had a devestating effect on the islands and their inhabitants. Wreckage, crystals, mutated animals are present in every direction. Your first quests involve healing survivors (using the racial ability Gift of the Naaru which is a healing spell that gains strength as you gain levels), killing giant mutated flowers and moths and gathering materials to heal survivors. All the quests are geared toward recovering from the crash.”

  • What’s with all these crazy new numbers?

The above is likely the question many of you will be asking yourselves when you first load up the Burning Crusade and look at some of your equipment. I know I did. When the Burning Crusade is released (and possibly even before in a patch to the game) many of the old standard bonuses to gear will be gone.

The obvious ones that you will notice right away are +1% to crit and +1% to hit. Instead you will see cryptic looking numbers like +14 to critical strike and +22 to hit. There are even new ones like +20 to resilience. What is Resilience? Don’t worry all will be explained.

"Hunters gain the ability to track their enemies starting at level two (with Track Beasts). Each type of enemy (beast, humanoid, undead, hidden, elementals, demons, giants, and dragons) can be tracked using a different ability. When an ability is active you will see any of those type of those creatures on the mini-map (both friend and foe). Track Hidden of course will only show nearby stealthed creatures and players and increase your stealth detection."

  • WoW's expansion rate: wow or blah?

With the first expansion to the World of Warcraft due on shelves just after Christmas, we look at the expansion rate of WoW so far. Has it been worth the wait for what has changed? Does the pace of change not measure up to expectations?

The second of the questions above is a bit trickier, how has the community responded to this rate of change. It’s trickier because it depends who you talk to. If you ask a raider, they are probably fairly happy since they are still working their way through Ahn’Qiraj and Naxxramas. There are a few guilds that have defeated these raids, but they are few and far between. If you ask a PvP’er they may or may not be happy depending on which one you ask. If you ask an average player they are probably not very happy since most of the content added has been for the raiding and pvp crowd.

  • TenTonHammer's First Look at World PvP in the Burning Crusade

Everyone wants to know what is in store for them with the new world PvP system in the Burning Crusade. Will it make a difference? Will it be used? Is it fun? Read on to find out...

I think that these changes could make for some very interesting guild dynamics and / or mergers. With many worried about their place in a guild now that raids will only require 25 people, this may provide space in a guild for additional players. It will also help provide a place for PvP and Raiding in the same guild. I can imagine coordination either with another guild or another element of the same guild to go and capture a PvP element to help with a raid. The PvP’ers would have to capture the world PvP element in a specific zone at a specific time to coordinate with a guild raid going on to give that guild an edge in the raid. This could be critical for things such as first attempts or speed runs though a raid or instance.
