Currently in alpha testing (but accepting registrations for beta), Dusktreaders is a gothic (dark fantasy) MMORPG. The game will be free-to-play for basic content, a subscription is required for premium content and certain features. Dusktreaders is set in the Victorian era with steampunk and gothic influences. Be ready to face off with vampires, werewolves, and misfits of science. As the game is currently still in development, concrete facts are hard to come by. There is no set release date. Guilds, items/loot, and missions are all planned for the game, while PvP is not. Player/guild housing is also slated for the game.

Players will be able to choose one class at level one, two of six classes at 11, and three at 41. The classes are: Dueler, Rogue, Hunter, Witch, Sorcerer and Avenger. Players earn levels through an Achievement System. In general, Dusktreaders looks to be fairly similar to many other MMOGs, albeit in a darker setting. With the 'No Regret' system, players can undo design decisions with their character they have chosen and become unhappy with. Some dungeons and zones will be instanced to avoid overcrowding.

On January 19th, 2009, Dusktreaders released a mobile version available in the Apple iTunes store. The mobile version is available for use with the iTouch and iPhone. The PC MMOG version is still in development.

  • Checkpoint

The official site for Dusktreaders, which has been silent for many months now, has come alive again! There was a news post made to bring up to speed on where things stand with this upcoming MMO.

We haven't published much news of late, but it doesn't mean we haven't been busy. We are working our hind ends off getting this game to beta.

    So, where are things?

Well, from a development perspective, we are nearly finished with the 4th iteration of the game platform. The latest revision is faster, more stable, and looks better. Hard to believe we've started from scratch that many times already. Where has all the time gone?

There's more so get clicking to read it.

  • Innovative new system for item rewards

Dusktreaders has released information on thier innovative item reward system that reportedly will not penalize players based on if they choose to group or solo mainly.

Treasure rewards will now be based on the effort players exert.

For example, if a solo player beats a monster that is very hard for her, she will receive the same quality of gear reward as three players who beat a monster that is very hard for them. Both the solo player and the group player worked hard, and they both deserve a reward that shows it.

Read the rest of this announcement and then head over to the forums here at
Ten Ton Hammer and let us know what you think. Do you think that this system will be successful?

  • I am now going to admit to you something that I've never admitted to anyone in my life. . . I don't read lore. It's not something that attracts me. With that said, I have read Dusktreader's Lycan Lore. I was spellbound through the entire piece.

The army cut large swaths through the forest as they advanced, and built siege weapons from the trees. Large bonfires burned through the nights. Alcoa’s walls were too high and its city too well protected to directly attack it, so the invading army took camp outside of its gates. Controlling the fertile lands beyond the city, they hoped to starve them into submission. While the months passed, the men of Isathule foraged the wilderness clean for many miles.

Pauh appeared to the tribal leader Trigould and told him of the ruin the army wrought on the land. True to his word, Trigould gathered his hunters and their large grey wolves to prepare to defend the land.

As Trigould and his clansmen approached the encampment, they saw the army of Isathule outnumbered the hunters of Cohanna nearly ten to one. Trigould knew their chances of victory were slim, and even with the goddess behind them he feared the loss of his tribe.

If you're looking for a good story you have to read the rest.

  • I promised and so I deliver. Erik was kind enough to explain the reasoning behind re-naming clerics to paladins. Here it is.

We had no intentions of muddying the waters with that name change. We felt 'cleric' was just too passive of a name for our holy warriors. Simply put, it just didn't fit well with the lore. Of course, if we were trying to be historically accurate (which is not our aim), Paladins in the real world would have been gone about 300 or 400 years previous to guns. Still, we felt it was the best name for the class, so we decided to go with it.

I guess we'll see how the public takes it. I have heard negative gut reactions from a handful of outside folks, however I hope from a game play perspective, people come to appreciate the choice. I also hope folks enjoy the lore that goes with the class and how closely it ties to the current events in Cantele.

In no way, do we envision anybody being compelled to wear shining armor. You pick your outfit when you design your character and it has no effect on your stats or bonuses, you could look like a knight of old in shining armor -- which honestly would be out of place in this era, but you could be role-playing such a character from a time past -- or you could choose to wear dark leather and a long coat. Either way, it is the player's choice and either way it has no effect on the game mechanics. Currently, the only gear that you find that impacts your appearance are the weapons you acquire. Otherwise, your look is totally your own to design.

What's more, with the ability to choose multiple classes over your character's career, you could very well build exciting combinations like a Rogue/Paladin or even a Sorcerer/Paladin. We believe these combinations fit in with the lore just as well as being a pure Paladin.

Heroes and Heroins from many vampire stories might very well be considered part Paladin in our world.

So there you have it. It makes a ton more sense now doesn't it?

  • Before I get into the lore news, I have to tell you about the paladin change. I got an email from Necrolis who is a reader. (Much to my appreciation) You probably read about my unease with calling the cleric class, paladins. He was kind enough to explain their take on this class. If you're having visions of shining armor you're off base. I'll ask him if I can post the email on the site and you'll get an idea of where they're coming from. It's pretty exciting.

Ok back to the Lore! Get the new lore right here!

  • Ok I really dig these guys at Granite games but I need to raise my eyebrows at this one. According to the official website, Clerics are now being called Paladins.

I'm going to have to ask Necrolis what's going on here. If you have visions of holy warriors in plate like I do, you're highly confused right now. We'll get to the bottom of this, yes we will.

  • Just in case you weren't paying attention, the team at Granite Games snuck in a bunch of new in game images into the official Dusktreaders site. It's like a mini Easter egg hunt. They've revealed a bit more of the game in process. If you dig Vampires and Werewolves, want to occasionally stake them and would be happy to do that in game, you should check it out.

  • Dusktreaders has new lore!

“We were sailing from Treffaren to bring goods north to Kellathin. At night we had dropped anchor to prevent running ashore in the fog. I think half the crew was dead before we knew the pirates were even on board. With black powder in the hold, I knew I had to jump overboard when the fire started. Really, the black powder saved me.”

It's a good story so while you're waiting for the WoW servers to come up, go check it out!
