  • Biz Model Wars! I prefer swimsuit model wars!
Next Generation has an interesting article about the MMOG business model wars featuring Richard Garriott of NCSoft. Friends, Romans, Countrymen, lend me your money:

"It’s impressed the reviewers and it’s topped the sales charts. But Guild Wars has an awesome task to perform. “We have to sell at least five times more copies than a subscriber-based online game in order to get to about the same level of profitability,” says Garriott, matter of factly."

  • If it's not Scottish, it's crap!
An unnamed Scottish MMOG developer is looking for a Senior Games Designer. Mike Meyers closed the door so the wee beasties wouldn't get in and exclaimed:

"This is a Scottish company has a unique concept and technology that will create new possibilities in massively multi-player on-line gaming. They are currently looking for a Senior Designer to work closely with the Lead on an original Massively Multiplayer Online PC title. Their responsibilities will include contributing to the overall game design, developing the framework of original game-play mechanics, writing and maintaining the game design document and moving with the project into level creation, scripting and mission design. Applicants must be both creative and have a straight-forward approach to design."

    Tuesday, you just can't lose-day.
Attack of the Show is beginning to grow on me. Having a monkey as guest host today was a larger than large step up from some of the guys that were on. I half expected some of the previous guest hosts to start flinging poo. When Kevin Rose left I thought the show would tank, but Kevin Pereira has turned out be an entertaining guy. He hasn't topped his all-time best quote from Arena - "Bodies flying everywhere, but nothing is getting done. Kind of like my bachelor party," but I keep the faith. Even changing the name from the cool "The Screen Savers" to the smart as a brick "Attack of the Show" hasn't turned me off.

  • RYL - $1,000,000
GameCloud has posted a RYL: Path of the Emperor Interview featuring Mark Politi of Planetwide Games. Who wants to be a millionaire called and said something that sounded disturbingly like this:

"Launching a new MMORPG is no easy task nowadays but Planetwide Games has already gotten one big ace in the hole in their recent launch of their fantasy MMORPG RYL: Path Of The Emperor (the North American version of the Taiwan based tile from Youxiland Digital) ; a $1 million online in-game tournament that officially began last week. Gamecloud got a chance to chat with Planetwide's Vice President of Sales and Marketing Mark Politi to find out more about the game and the tournament."

  • Even villains like their 15 minutes of fame.
GameHelper has posted a City of Villains interview featuring Senior Designer, David "Zeb" Cook. The Riddler appeared in our office and said something that didn't resemble this at all:

"For City of Villains, we’ve created a whole new setting, the Rogue Isles, for villain players.  Located in the Atlantic and beyond the jurisdiction of the heroes of Paragon City, the Rogue Isles are ruled by Lord Recluse, head of Arachnos, a world-wide evil organization bent on – well, the same things all evil supergroups want. This gives us a place where players can be villains without having to worry about being overrun by the thousands of hero characters already out there.  The Rogue Isles fit with the existing CoH timelines hand-in-glove and you will see crossover between the two – story elements, famous characters, and, of course, player interaction in the PvP zones."

  • Why do villains live in such dingy, dirty places?
IGN has posted a City of Villains interview featuring Senior Designer Sean Fish. On an island of villains backed by the U.N. we found the following etched into a slab of rock:

"Today we got the chance to talk to Senior Designer Sean Fish about what exactly a signature villain is, where they'll be in the game, and when players can expect to actually see them."
