There will also be three levels of PvP once you meet up with the other players after the singleplayer introduction. You've got drunken brawling (the most basic PvP, but very fun sounding with staggering drunks and everything), arena fights (gladiatorial combat bouts), and guild PvP (guild versus guild battles). You'll also be able to create your own PvP matches if you want.

  • Nick LaMartina Shares His Thoughts

The official site for Stargate Worlds has been updated to point us towards Mix Magazine who recently interviewed sound designer Nick LaMartina.

"The increase in overall game budgets has trickled down to the audio production pipeline, as more money is being spent in all facets, from building quality studios to conducting location recording, Foley work and live music sessions, ensuring that games have a level of sonic quality control that rivals film.

  • Erik Mogensen and Jon Gillard from Games Workshop talk about EA Mythic's Warhammer Online as well as the newly announced Warhammer 40K MMORPG.

MMORPG.com had a chance to sit down with the folks from Games Workshop at GDC. Keep reading to see what they were able to learn.

GW and Vigil hope to make sure every element of the Warhammer 40,000 universe is somehow represented in the game. As many know, this is not an easy task. Obviously some tough choices have to be made in regards to playable races, game interface, setting, and format (first person shooter, or third person RPG style). Both companies seem to have their sights in the right place as far as delivering the best MMO possible.

  • Stargate Worlds details divulged

Gamespot recently had a chance to sit down with Stargate Worlds' Joe Ybarra. Keep reading to see what they were able to learn.

The game dev team has access to most of the art assets from the TV series, including costumes, storylines, and the entire city of Atlantis. The game's story will apparently take place across seasons three, four, five, six, seven, and eight of the TV show's run--a portion of the series that Ybarra suggested is fertile ground for story material. In addition to citing the TV shows, the designer also pointed out that two direct-to-video motion pictures are also in production, and that "new content can be integrated both ways," both from the show into the game and vice versa.

  • Shane Dabiri Interview

Play.tm posted an interview today with the Lead Producer of World of Warcraft.

Has the game evolved in ways that you didn't expect when it was first released?

In some ways it has, but the great advantage of working on an online game is that we can sometimes make some pretty broad changes as needed. One example that comes to mind was the original PvP Honor System. We thought players would enjoy the challenge and accomplishment of achieving the highest rank, but after receiving good feedback from the community we decided to change the system to better fit the play style of our customers.

  • The Rest of the GDC Age of Conan Preview!

We've been hard at work listening to our voice recorders and transcribing the events that occurred at our GDC Age of Conan demo, and now the rest of the extensive Age of Conan preview is ready to read. Rather than preparing a video or giving us a demonstration on a closed server, Jorgen Tharaldsen, Conan's Product Director, and Designer Thor Bjorno loaded a character onto a running server where a few hundred closed beta testers were churning through the developed content, pointing out any errors or inconsistencies with the gameplay. Over the span of two days, a pair of sessions, and three hours of actual discussions, Jorgen and I hashed out some things that hadn't been extensively discussed on the website. The rest of the preview includes a look at AI, PvP, seige warfare, quests, and more!

"You can't just charge into the camp," Jorgen said as he walked his character around. "If you do, the guards at the front of the camp will alert those in the back, spawning more guards and bringing them all down upon you at once. You can achieve your goal this way, but there are other ways to achieve this goal: You can poison the food source, you can use the day night cycle to your advantage, you can even set their tents on fire. We made the camps unpredictable, so players won't be able to simply saunter in and do the same thing their friend just did."

  • A Stargate Worlds Update with Joe Ybarra from GDC 2007

Stargate SG-1 is the longest continuously running sci-fi series in television history and, as fans of the series know, offers the perfect backdrop for an MMOG set in the present day. Though the original series is currently airing its last season in the US, the spinoff Stargate Atlantis is still going strong, a pair of direct-to-DVD movies is in the offing, and MGM just announced a third television series based on Stargate lore. Joe Ybarra, VP of Product Development at Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment (maker of Stargate Worlds) sat down with us at GDC 2007 to share some of the joys and challenges of framing an MMOG around an IP very much in flux.

[Joe Ybarra:] "As events were to unfold, we were on the automated script delivery system from the [ Stargate SG-1] production staff, so every time they'd produce a script, we'd get an electronic copy. So about July or August of [2006], we got the last script of Season 10 [the show's grand finale]. We read the script, and everybody turned white – 'Oh my God! Look what they did!' So we pressed a big reset button."

  • Thoughts on Age of Conan From GDC

MMORPG.com updated their site today with their thoughts on the upcoming Age of Conan. They had a chance to get a look at it at GDC.

There is a very strong interface in the game for players to build social networks. The system to find groups or guilds is easily accessible in the game. Instead of players having to type out in chat, using the social interface allows players to form and shape the community in the game itself.

“It is the will of the gods,” was the Stygian player avatar’s retort. But the villager pleads and the quest in undertaken to find the alligator that ate the wife, slay the beast, cut it open and bring the remains of the woman back to the villager.
