The official Dungeons and Dragons Online site has posted a developer's diary with Ken Troop, Lead Designer. Gary Gygax would not return our calls, but if he had we are sure he wouldn't have said this:

" Hey everyone.  I'm Ken Troop, lead designer on Dungeons & Dragons® Online: Stormreach".   This development diary delves into the background behind a very important issue: advancement in DDO.  "

You can read the entire Dungeons and Dragons Online: Stormreach Developer's Diary at The Official Site.

  • "Anarchy Online" Doesn't Just Describe the WoW PvP Servers!

Third in our series of MMOG profiles, we examine the 2001 Sci-Fi blockbuster MMO Anarchy Online this week. AO introduced a slew of revolutionary changes to the genre after a turgid, buggy start; ideas such as instancing and player housing that soon became staple additions to any rising star.

Who said MMORPGs had to have a fantasy backdrop of orcs, elves, gnomes, and magic? When Anarchy Online busted onto the scene in mid-2001 with its massive 50,000 player-per-server approach, the initial enthusiasm in a true Sci-Fi themed MMOG was tempered by a period of crippling bugs and technical glitches. Funcom was quick to make good on its first MMO, and by the time Dark Age of Camelot was released in November 2001, AO was releasing its first expansion ("Notum Wars") to compliment a polished, unique, and fun-to-play package.

AO's differences aren't purely thematic or technical. When I first logged onto AO and was muddling through the fairly-steep learning curve of a combat and advancement system (steep, despite a brutal assault by popup tips), I realized I was being followed by a player character. Being fairly used to other MMOGs, where newbie zones are sort of a terrorist playground, I didn't pay much attention at first. When I turned around, I realized this player, "Greeter Mitzuharu" was trying desperately to get my attention. Wait a sec..."Greeter"? This was an actual, true-to-life person, welcoming me to the game, and asking me if I had any questions. I was almost too surprised to reply!

Far from eulogizing games like AO or boxing them up as "past their prime", we honor them as "going concerns" in the only genre for whom constant improvement is a way of life for the developers. MMOGs are truly gamers' games.

  • Fancy pictures of a game you can't play yet.
The official Tabula Rasa site has posted some new screenshots of the upcoming Richard Garriott title. Fanbois of Lord British have begun tatooing the following on their buttocks:

"This is a test of the emergency description system. Had the folks responsible for posting the Tabula Rasa screenshots actually posted descriptions you would have been able to read them here. Remember, this is only a test. Had there been a real emergency we would be watching Stargate SG-1 and missing it anyway. "

Kid busted by WoW Playing Mommy is an article up on Joystiq. MAWP, Mothers Against WoW Players has delivered a press release that goes something like this:

"Blizzard’s World of Warcraft is the biggest MMORPG ever. So big, in fact, that everyone and his mother is playing it… literally. "

  • Ever want to just slay an orc or two?
LotRO's newest screenshot might just fuel that urge. This game looks great, and if you don't believe me...

"[Ed. Note: I was going to paste the UUCode for the image here, since there's no description. But since very few of us can down UUCode straight, without a viewer of some sort, I figured you might better enjoy clicking on the link below for instant visual gratification.]"

TheTheGame has posted some Dungeons and Dragons Online: Stormreach screenshots. Courtney Love was unavailable for comment, but are relatively sure that she is part dragon. We are also relatively sure that she has never said the following:

" "Dungeons & Dragons Online" will let players travel alone or in parties as they explore the seemingly endless dungeon complexes found beneath the world. Through the dungeons, players will engage in physical and magical combat with hideous foes straight from the pages of the "Monster Manual"(TM) rulebook. "

  • Evil, dirty, living in the city, and we don't mean the roaches in your local burger joint.
Pro-G has some new City of Villains screenshots for your viewing pleasure. Rob Zombie, though not undead himself did sing Living Dead Girl. He did not, however, sing the following:

"This is a test of the emergency description system. In the event that the guys at Pro-G had taken 10 seconds out of their lives to post descriptions of the City of Villains screenshots mentioned above you would have read them here. Remember, this is only a test. In the event of a true emergency we would be hiding under our desks."

  • Dungeons and Dragons. Does that mean that every dungeon has a dragon in it?
IGN has posted a preview of Dungeons and Dragons Online: Stormreach. Lord Nagafen and Lady Vox have created a dragon support group. The inscription over the lair looks absolutely nothing like this:

"It's tough being an MMO these days. Or at least, an MMO that isn't
World of Warcraft. On the fantasy side, they seem to have everything
sewn up. So what's the appeal of yet another persistent online sword
and sorcery game? Well, how about one that takes out crafting,
grinding, auction houses, and focuses on pure Dungeons & Dragons modules? How about one where you don't need to play for weeks just to earn the privilege of spending all your money on a horse? In DDO, slated for early next year, it's the dungeons and the city, and you're whipped from one to the other quickly and cleanly, with the focus on venturing with a party. "

  • Rivieras with Rail-guns.
MMORPG has posted an Auto Assault Interview with Ryan Seabury. Bo Bice has never sung to Ryan Seabury. It's also unlikely he has ever sung the following:

" Ryan Seabury is the Design Director for Auto Assault, the second MMORPG from NetDevil who were also responsible for Jumpgate. Now published by NCSoft, NetDevil faces some tall challenges on their second title and have entrusted the direction of their title to this man. We use this chance to see who he is and where he is going. "
