  • I need your help, Obi-Wan Kenobi.
IGN has posted a preview of Star Wars Galaxies: Trials of Obi-Wan. The preview is a good read covering the new, or should it be returning villain, as well as touching on the solo versus group aspect of the expansion. Mark Hamill will talk to anyone...but us, so we'll pretend that he said this:

" If there's any game that's managed to stir up some controversy with it's various incarnations, changes, and general shinannegans, it's Star Wars Galaxies. It was easily one of the most anticipated MMOs to hit shelves and provided a unique look at the Star Wars universe that crafters and role-players seemed to like more than most interested in combat scenarios. For good or bad, much has changed in Galaxies including a new combat system and an increased focus on loot to keep people adventuring. With those ideas in mind, Sony Online and LucasArts have created a new high level expansion called Trials of Obi-Wan, where players will indeed get the chance to meet the wise one himself… well, in ghost form anyway. "

  • Zeb tells all, details at, well, right now.
MMORPG.com has posted their final interview in the series with City of Villains designer David "Zeb" Cook. The interview touches on PvP and sidekicks. Adam West denied that there was any sexual tension between himself and Robin, before switching to this:

"Here in the final part Q&A with David "Zeb" Cook of Cryptic Studios, Neil Thompson wraps up the interview with a few more questions. City of Villains is due out on Halloween. "

  • The man with the golden disc.
City of Villains has gone gold and will be appearing in a store near you on October 31st. Get dressed up as your favourite villain for Halloween and head down to pick up a copy. The official site also takes a look at the Coralax Hybrids, a villainous group and has posted new information on what Pre-order customers will receive, most notably for some will be the two-day headstart on the game. Unable to find any intelligent villains to interview we attempted to talk to Jack Thompson who was too busy pulling his head out of his arse to say anything other than:

" Beta access has been granted to anyone who has Pre-ordered the game....With the pre-order you also get a head-start when the game launches! "

  • Hondas with harpoons.
The good folks at NetDevil, the developers of Auto Assault are looking for a new team member. Vin Diesel refused to live in Louisville, but considered himself the top map designer in the world. His frustration was evident when he uttered:

" A Senior Map Designer will be responsible for producing and maintaining game content specified from design documentation, specifically maps, levels, and missions, for Auto Assault, a vehicular combat MMOG project, in a deadline-driven, team environment. "

  • Avault in Alcatraz.
The Adrenaline Vault have posted their impressions of City of Villains based on their experience at the Alcatraz event held recently. Sean Connery did not feel obliged to comment on this story, or on the movie "The Rock". He did point right at us, yell, "You're the man now dog!" and then uttered this:

" Outside of the icy grip of death itself, there isn’t much else in this world that can unnerve a man more than being faced with a life sentence inside of the confines of a prison cell. Especially having to spend the rest of your time on Earth locked up and situated on the most infamous island in the United States, Alcatraz. No one ever said that being one of the world’s most wanted criminals was easy, but life on The Rock proved to be more disparate than most of its occupants ever imagined. It was so bad in fact these vile men coined Alcatraz with a new name, “Hellcatraz”. "

  • LotRO Goes Canadian.
The official Lord of the Rings Online site has posted a developer diary featuring Jill Harrington. Jill is the lead technical artist on the title. We called the Canadian embassy in Slovakia to see if they would comment on this story, but they were busy making pancakes and could only utter the following statement:

You may have noticed an eerie Ringwraith or two lurking in some of our screenshots. While our talented modelers, texture artists and animators truly bring these creatures to life, I thought it might be interesting to give you a peek behind the scenes – or, rather, behind his robes – to talk about another important step in bringing characters to life: the character setup process.
I am the lead technical artist on The Lord of the Rings Online and one of the most important parts of my job is to set up finished models so that they can be animated. Anything in the game that moves – whether it be a hobbit, a door, or a Ringwraith – has a skeleton built for it by a technical artist. We then attach the model to the skeleton (this is called "binding the skin"), and make sure that it deforms properly when the skeleton is posed (called "weighting" – as each point on a model has an amount of "weight" for each bone that affects it). We set up control boxes to make the animators' jobs easier, then pass the character on for animation. The software we use for this process is Maya, by a company called Alias."

  • "We're not ready to talk about <insert your broad category of interest here>. Stay tuned!"
Turbine sits down with MMORPG in one interview perhaps more notable for what wasn't said. It sounds like there's a lot of work to be done on the concepts behind Middle Earth's MMO; either that, or the Turbine team is being extraordinarily tight-lipped.

"MMORPG.com: Will our actions be able to change things in the world? Can we take over and occupy buildings, or towns? Perhaps drive the orcs from a town and reclaim it?
Jeffrey Steefel: An interesting question indeed – stay tuned for answers…"

  • The Bad-man of Alcatraz
No Clint Eastwood, but some big names in MMO gaming (and a few schmoes dressed up as comic book supervillains) were in San Francisco bay to showcase "City of Villains" - next-to-release MMO (late October) and stand-alone sequel to the immensely popular City of Heroes.

"NCsoft recently held an event in San Francisco, or rather, in the San Francisco Bay, to showcase some of the new features being implemented in their upcoming title, City of Villains – particularly base building and base raids. Held within the confines of Alcatraz Island, Lord Recluse and his right-hand woman, Ghost Widow, were on hand to interest the attendees into joining their league of evil, Arachnos.
Not to be outdone by these villains, our hero Robert Garriott, CEO NCsoft North America, presented his plan for subscriber domination: Two games, one fee - $14.95."

  • The not-so-secret secrets.
GamingGuides.com has posted a lengthy article titled, "Secrets of Massively Multiplayer Farming". I'm not sure these were secrets to anyone who has played World of Warcraft, but the article was an interesting read.

    "
In the past several months, I’ve become friendly with a number of the professional farmers on my server. I had no special motive in doing so; I certainly didn’t befriend them so that I could study them. Nonetheless, during the course of our teaming and chatting together, I gained glimpses into their lifestyles and learned things that I’ve found to be interesting and that I would like to share. The odds are that if you have access to the venue where this document is being published, you’ll find them interesting too. "
