  • I'm omnipotent, and I wear yellow tights!
IGN has posted a preview of City of Heroes: The Forest of Dread. Bruce Campbell, mistaking "Dread" for "Dead" rushing to Paragon City and announced:

" As any former or continuing players are probably aware, developer Cryptic Studios is serious about continuing to push big updates through into City of Heroes as long as the game has legs. So far, it's legs look to be running strong so it's no real surprise that another update will be hitting the game soon… as in "next week" soon. We had a chance to check out The Forest of Dread update recently in order to get a look at the new zone, powers sets, villains, and more. "

  • Auto Assault Throws on the Binders.
According to the Steven Snow, as posted on the Official Auto Assault message forums, the massively multiplayer car mayhem game has been delayed until 2006. Mel Gibson put away his Mad Max costume and listened to Steve Snow say:

" NetDevil and NCsoft are both companies with a strong commitment to releasing 'only when it's ready,' so we want to extend the beta into the spring of 2006," "

  • "Laugh it up, Fuzzball!"

Okay, I promise that's the last of the Star Wars quotes! TTH takes a ride on the gamer's unrealized dream slash developer's turgid rollercoaster that is Star Wars Galaxies, and the resulting "MMOG profile" is like the overpriced picture you can buy at the end (except ours is free!).

While Anarchy Online set a high bar for the sci-fi themed MMOG, it's hard to think of Star Wars Galaxies as fitting any kind of mold. Star Wars has had a life all its own for over 27 years, before the mid-to-low end of the MMO demographic was even a twinkle in our daddy's eye.

SWG desired to place us in the world of Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and everything that makes Star Wars a cultural phenomenon. It was, and is (at least until Lord of the Rings Online is released in 2006), the only MMO that has endeavored to inhabit a world whose structure is largely scripted, rather than built from scratch by producers and designers. Far from simplifying the process, high storyline expectations and stringent artistic production values (thanks to the magic of LucasArts, SWG was the finest looking MMO of its day) plus some truly unique (and, at times, disasterous) innovations lead players and developers on quite a ride.

Far from eulogizing games like SWG or boxing them up as "past their prime", we honor them as "going concerns" in the only genre for whom constant improvement is a way of life for the developers. MMOGs are truly gamers' games.

  • What does a d20 and a chat log have in common?
Stratics has a dev chat log posted, detailing some of the finer points of class characteristics, stealth, food/drink issues, and a whole lot more!

Brannoc - *DiploMooz* Hi! I had the good fortune to play the DDO E3 build recently. I was particularly fond of stealthing around with the rogue. It seemed somehow more interesting than the binary "can the mob see me or not" of previous games. Can you expound upon the features planned for stealthing in ddo?

EckelberryDDO - I can try! Stealth is little more complicated than the you are detected or not sort of things. Of course we represent D&D in comparing your Hide Skill and Move Silently and the monster's Listen and Spot score. It also combines how long you dare to stay near the monster trying to detect you, and the level of lighting around your character, which can either give you a bonus or penalty to your skill check, and it can determin

EckelberryDDO - how often the monster "looks" for you\

JustinQuimby - Just as a side note, we've put a ton more stuff into the game and polished a lot of features in the game since the E3 build. I'm very excited about the upcoming Alpha prop.

The rest of the Dungeons & Dragons Online Developer Chat Log is posted at Stratics.

Boomtown has posted an Auto Assault interview featuring, loot, items and crafting. Vin Diesel once saw a ghost, and it was so scared of him that it turned white. After, he mumbled something that sounded nothing like this:

" The third in a series of in-depth Q&As with the Auto Assault dev-team, discusses Loot, Items and Crafting... "

  • Magic Missle Mayhem
GameSpy has posted a Dungeons and Dragons Online: Stormreach interview featuring designer Dave Eckleberry. Vin Diesel didn't roll the dice when he played Dungeons and Dragons. He just crushed them in his hand and called out the numbers. We're confident he didn't call this out:

" We sit down with one of the designers of Turbine's upcoming MMO to talk about combat, death traps, and why Eberron is so damned cool. "

Worthplaying has posted some new Auto Assault Screenshots. Kevin Costner still regrets Water World, but we're sure he wouldn't regret saying this:

" Auto Assault uses the power of the Havok physics engine to let you make insane jumps, send obstacles flying and even blast bridges, buildings, fences and trees with your car-mounted rockets. Anything you can hit, you can destroy! "

  • Bringing chaos to your door. Delivery is free.
GamesRadar has posted a City of Villains Preview. Where have all the heroes gone? We don't know, but we do know this:

"Cryptic Studios were rebuffed by publisher after publisher when looking for a commercial partner to bring their world to spandex-hungry PC gamers.
They knew that a game based around superheroes would find an audience. But in a time where everything was an EverQuest clone, no one would believe them. Until they met Korean publishers NCsoft."
