  • Mean and nasty, coming to a screen near you.
GameSpy has posted a City of Villains interview featuring Zeb Cook. Magneto assured us that the following was true:

" Zeb Cook's been a lot of things during his years as a game designer. He was one of the TSR guys responsible for the Planescape setting, and when he moved to the video-game world, he worked on a number of high-profile projects like Fallout 2 and Blood & Magic. One thing he's not, though, and never has been, is a mean-spirited guy. That's why it was so strange to find him at this year's GenCon gaming convention chuckling evilly and waxing poetic on the virtues of being rotten. "

  • Renaults with Rocket Launchers
Loot and economy were the theme of a recent IRC chat with Auto Assault devs Scott Brown and Ryan Seabury:

Question: Will dropped loot from enemies include unique items? (not accessible from vendors or crafting)

Scott Brown: Since the loot engine is dynamic almost everything in the game is unique, at least statistically. Each base item also has a rarity to drop as well. We expect that a high percentage of the loot you have in game will come from drops.

Question: How will item drops be shared among players in a party? Will it use drop assignment, the classic free-for-all, or a crafty something else?

Scott Brown: Players can choose between loot modes when in a convoy. First, they can choose to be free for all where the player who gets the kill owns the loot. Second, they can choose distributed, where each player gets one item at a time. We mix up the player list though so you don't always know who is going to get an item next. We didn't want a system where you would have to slow down your game play to deal with loot sharing so there's no dialog or anything whilst in combat.

Gamerati has an Auto Assault preview posted based on their play at QuakeCon. Bruce Campbell showed them his "Boomstick!" and yelled this:

"While we were at QuakeCon 2005 last weekend, I was able to get some
quality time in with a non-restricted and unsupervised copy of Auto Assault from NCSoft and NetDevil. While I wasn't able to spend enough time to cover every class, I did get quite a bit of detail on the Human Lieutenant in addition to some general class/race info, and a small vid in addition to a whole mess of screenshots. • Maybe their tights are just too tight?
GameSpot has a City of Villains interview posted featuring Jack Emmert, the creative director on the game. The Rhino charged into our offices and smashed them to bits. In the rubble we found the following:

" It's good to be evil, or that's the lesson that NCsoft and Cryptic Studios hope that you'll learn later this year, when City of Villains launches. This follow-up to last year's online role-playing game City of Heroes will twist things around a bit. Instead of creating a unique and powerful superhero and saving the world from destruction, you'll create a dastardly supervillain who is looking to become rich, powerful, and infamous. You'll not only battle computer-controlled opponents, but you'll also get into scruffs with other villains, not to mention those meddling superheroes. City of Villains is currently undergoing its beta test for the November launch, so we caught up with Jack Emmert, City of Villains' creative director, to learn more about what you'll be able to do in the game. • SWDP (Single White Dwarf Priest) seeks Elven paladin level 10-12 for long walks in a dungeon.
GameSpy has posted a Dungeons and Dragons Online: Stormreach preview based on their experience with the title at GenCon in Indianapolis. Samuel L. Jackson rolled the dice and exlaimed:

" I came to the 2005 GenCon Game Faire in Indianapolis with only a small
list of "must-do" items. Sitting somewhere in the top five roughly between "get 'Geek version 2.0' t-shirts for my kids" and "finally buy that plush Cthulhu toy" was "get in some hands-on time with Dungeons & Dragons Online." Okay, I'll admit it, I was a big ol' D&D geek back in the day, and while I haven't had the time to play in many years, I still have a lot of affection for the game. Add to that the idea of building a whole MMO around it and I'm in. Rather than just dive in, though, I decided to wait until after my extended conversation with Dave Eckleberry. I'd wait to see what he had to say about what makes the product distinct and then judge for myself by actually playing the game.

  • One lunch to souse them all

Turbine has posted an account of the "Lunch of the Rings"at Dave & Buster's in Providence, RI . Apparently a couple dwarves had a little too much to drink, and after a frustrating session in the Mechwarrior arena took out their frustrations on the arcade with their axes! Film at 11.

During lunch, most of the tables had at least one LOTRO team member to chat with (the exception being the table with Calandryll and our AC1 folks). It was such a pleasure to hear laughter coming so frequently from the tables – the LOTRO community is so friendly and fun, as long as you don't step on their lore. *duck* There was lots of drooling over the E3 video, which Thrindil and Polleke worked so hard to get working with the Dave & Buster's equipment, and laughter over the video greetings – especially Amon Ereb's, which started with a very, very twisted puppet show.

  • "Where there is a master..."
LucasArts announced plans for another SWG expansion as a followup to "Rage of the Wookies." Apparently Obi-Wan has some work for you to do. The whole of the new expansion, "Trials of Obi Wan," is built around the Jedi's post-movie activities on Mustafar (the molten planet where we left him at the end of Episode III).

"With Trials of Obi-Wan being an expansion set for release via digital download the same day as the Episode III DVD, we can't think of a better planet to add to Star Wars Galaxies than Mustafar," said Julio Torres, Producer at LucasArts. "Meanwhile, including the spirit of Obi-Wan nicely bridges the prequel era and the more classic-oriented time period depicted in the game. We're really excited about continuing mythology established by other LucasArts games, as well."
