  • OGaming has an interview with Turbine's CEO Jeff Anderson

OGaming: Why the decision to self-publish your own titles?

Jeff Anderson : Before joining Turbine I was the executive in charge of production at Origin/Electronic Arts. At EA, I saw firsthand the strength of the publisher model with Ultima Online. There are terrific creative synergies and economies that come from developing and operating a self-published title. I wanted to bring that experience to Turbine.

What he really wanted to say was "So we could say SCHNEH! to the big boys!

  • Is it odd that I get the "Piano Man" song stuck in my head every time I think of bards or minstrels? Someone reserve a room at the looney bin! Turbine has posted new information on the Minstrel Class for Lord of the Rings Online.

    Minstrel
    Races: Man, Elf, Dwarf, Hobbit

'. . . in the midst of their merriment and tears the clear voice of the minstrel rose like silver and gold, and all men were hushed.'

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, "The Field of Cormallen"

With song and tale, a Minstrel brings hope to places thick with gloom. He can inspire those with desperate minds and heavy hearts to great deeds. In battle, he can turn the tide with songs that strengthen his allies and dirges which strike fear into the hearts of his enemies.

The Minstrel will be the class of choice for players who want to aid their friends, inspiring them to keep going through the darkest of times. With a vast repertoire of tales both fair and foul, a Minstrel restores the morale of his fellows, as well as causing his enemies to despair. Though able to wield weapons, he prefers to let his words, rather than his sword, speak for him. A Minstrel's style of combat is based on maintaining hope no matter what the odds.

  • The Lord of the Rings Online Official site has updated another of their classes. This time they focus on Captains.

    Captain
    Races: Man

'And this I also say: you are our captain and our banner. The Dark Lord has Nine. But we have One, mightier than they. . . .'
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, "The White Rider"

Bearing her banner into battle, a Captain provides hope and leadership to her fellows, inspiring them to greater deeds. A skilled Captain can rally a party back from the brink of defeat, or seal a victory against many foes. While a Captain is a respected fighter on her own accord, she is primarily driven by her powerful sense of leadership to those fighting around her.

The Captain will be the class of choice for players who enjoy supporting their fellows while participating in melee combat. With her unique ability to plant banners to increase the battle prowess of those near them, the Captain helps to define where a fight will happen. Her battle cries allow her to take advantage of certain events in combat to aid the morale or combat ability of her fellows. A Captain's style of combat focuses on inspiring those around her to glory.

This class sounds familiar.. Hmm what could it be?

  • Lord of the Rings Online Devs updated the official class page today with a more detailed description of the Guardian Class

    Guardian
    Races: Man, Elf, Dwarf, Hobbit

'Go after those two young hobbits, and guard them. . . .'
-The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring,
    "The Breaking of the Fellowship"

A doughty fighter and protector of the weak, a skilled Guardian can face even the toughest foes and survive. The Guardian is one of the few classes willing and able to try to draw more blows onto themselves, so they can retaliate with devastating maneuvers in response.

The Guardian will be the class of choice for players that enjoy drawing the attention of their foes in combat and taking advantage of their missteps. Masters of the defensive arts, Guardians use taxing attacks and irksome taunts to draw and hold opponents' attention, relying on their shield and weapon to turn aside incoming attacks with blocks and parries. A Guardian's combat style depends on creating openings during an opponent's attack to provide the opportunity for their own counterattack.

Finally! A class for all of the masochists out there! Not only will you draw that extra bit of pain and suffering to yourself but you'll look like a hero while you're doing it!

  • If you could ask Tolkien one question what would it be? The developers of Lord of the Rings Online answered this in their Developers Corner

Welcome to the Thursday Insider. In each Insider, we'll ask team members to answer a question about themselves, LOTRO, or The Lord of the Rings. You never know what you'll get from the LOTRO team!

In this Insider, we've asked two questions from the community. Enjoy!

    Jeffrey "Nigellian" Steefel (Executive Producer):
If you could travel to Middle-earth, and had one week to stay there, what would you most like to do with that time?

    Chris "Hakai" Clay (Artist/Designer):
If you could have lived the life of one of your characters who would it be and why?

And my question.. Why did Peter Jackson make a mockery of your book for the purpose of Star screen time? *cough* Liv Tyler *cough*..

  • But Tolkien did it without a database!

Lord of the Rings Online Developer Chris "NobOrBob" Foster shows off one of Turbine's myriad tools for game development, this one focusing on quest implementation. With this much storyline behind a certifiably graphics-intensive MMO, and with such a devout LotR playerbase, it's a good thing Turbine's streamlining things where they can.

For all these reasons and a few others, one of the biggest changes we made to the quest system was to replace the old quest file format with a new one. This unified quest file format contained nearly all of the information needed to place a quest in the world: the steps involved, the dialogue that each NPC says, the item that the monster should drop when it dies. In addition, the new quest file made it much easier to re-use the same characters on multiple quests...

  • Patience and PAX

Patience of the LotRO dev team posted her reflections on her side of the Turbine team's experience at the Penny Arcade Expo (PAX). We like Turbine, they hand out lots of free stuff!

As a special treat for PAX, we also showed a couple of things we didn't show at E3, even though they existed in the E3 build. We teleported to a prototype area of the Shire, with what might be a very familiar-looking windmill, horses, and clothesline to some of you who pay attention to the screenshots on the LOTRO site, and also to the Old Forest, to pay a visit to a sleeping Old Man Willow. This wasn't in the plan, but we just couldn't resist showing off a little bit more of the game. What was even more gratifying was being able to tell people who were blown away by the environments that the build is 5 months old; it looks even better these days, since the engine and a lot of the art has been updated (I was looking at the current build this afternoon in the QA pit and was pretty blown away myself by how beautiful it is, after being in the "old" build all weekend!).

  • One lunch to souse them all

Turbine has posted an account of the "Lunch of the Rings"at Dave & Buster's in Providence, RI . Apparently a couple dwarves had a little too much to drink, and after a frustrating session in the Mechwarrior arena took out their frustrations on the arcade with their axes! Film at 11.

During lunch, most of the tables had at least one LOTRO team member to chat with (the exception being the table with Calandryll and our AC1 folks). It was such a pleasure to hear laughter coming so frequently from the tables – the LOTRO community is so friendly and fun, as long as you don't step on their lore. *duck* There was lots of drooling over the E3 video, which Thrindil and Polleke worked so hard to get working with the Dave & Buster's equipment, and laughter over the video greetings – especially Amon Ereb's, which started with a very, very twisted puppet show.
