  • Smials - Great big bunkers for little bitty hobbits.

The Great Smials, or the Great Place of the Tooks, were excavated in Tuckborough by Isengrim II, the tenth Thain of the Shire and grandfather of the famous Bandobras "Bullroarer" Took. A great family hole akin to the Brandybucks' Brandy Hall, the Great Smials are deep and many-tunnelled. They were not only designed to provide a home for many generations of Tooks, but also to defend against incursion in dark times.

  • It's a famous landmark and now you get to see it through the eyes of the Turbine crew. See the Brandywine Bridge here. and read the lore behind it.

The Bridge of Stonebows, as the Brandywine Bridge was once called, was built originally by the Men of Arnor as a causeway across the Barandúin River on the Great East Road. When the founders of the Shire were granted their land by the king of Arthedain, the price was simple: to maintain and care for the Bridge so that travel into the West would never be impeded. The Hobbits of the Shire performed their duty, even long after the North-kingdom failed, and maintained the great stone bridge, denying none passage, Man, Elf, or Dwarf. Though the river's name was changed to the Brandywine and the bridge itself became the Brandywine Bridge, the Hobbits of the Shire continue to care for and keep watch on the Bridge.

  • Every time I see a new piece of concept art from this game, it takes my breath away. I don't know how true it will be to the story or how far they can go with it.. but the visuals, they just leave me speechless.

With that said, there is new lore today from the Official Lord of the Rings Online site.

This watch-tower, its name long-forgotten, once overlooked the eastern reaches of Fornost of which little now remains. Though crumbling and decrepit, it still stands as a grand testament to the architects of Arnor, a monument both carved from the living stone upon which it rests and built from stone blocks and mortar. The ruined tower yet watches over the eastern gate of Fornost, which still stands amidst crumbling walls, bearing the charge of the Seven Stars, though the courtyard beyond has become home to cursed shades, tainted by failure and betrayal.

Go read the rest and see what I mean about the art.

  • Er, what I meant to say was the Watching Stone. It's a new bestiary update for you today.

Statues throughout Middle-earth are not always what they seem. The very stone of some statues hold the trapped spirit of malice within, crafted by the Dark Lord long ago with skilled workmanship and dark ritual. These ominous statues act as sentries and alarms within the realm of Angmar and throughout the lands corrupted by the shadow. Within many of the ruins throughout Eriador and Arnor, in lands once controlled by the darkness of Mordor's reach, these watchers remain, ever-vigilant even after centuries of abandonment.

  • Middle Earth has so many fascinating places to visit. The world has a very rich environment. With that said, Turbine has released a new point of interest, Trestlebridge

Adventurers traveling north from the Bree-land along the mostly-abandoned Greenway will encounter a truly formidable barrier to further northerly travel: the dark cleft of Cirith Núr. Knifing between the North Downs and the southern regions of the shadowed and mysterious lands of Angmar, this dark cleft once held waters flowing out of Emyn Uial in the West. Over the ages, this mighty river has since receded, leaving only the sharp cliff edges and the uncertain depths below.

As a side note, the concept art that they have to go with the description is absolutely gorgeous!

  • I'm still laughing. I have tears I do. Developer Diary: Allan "Orion" Maki - Friends Don't Let Friends Tank Balrogs The name should speak volumes of the humor in this piece. However, that's not what started me laughing. It's the picture of Will with his cow bell smack at the top. You gotta love a man who appreciates the need for more cow bell.

So you want to know something about The Lord of the Rings Online™: Shadows of Angmar™. Excellent! If only I could deliver all of the juicy information which you seek! How wondrous would the outpouring of gratitude be, and how greater still the rancor that followed, as shortcomings and disagreements were debated until the coming of the Last Battle!

(Translation: before I was a developer, I was an MMO fan first, then an Online Community Rep. Be nice to Patience!)

If I could do that I would, but I cannot. NobOrBob and his Balrog, Snuggles, keep our darkest secrets, er, secret. What I can do, however, is give you a glimpse of LOTRO from a great height, as if borne by a Great Eagle.
