Lord of the Rings Online + Global Agenda Features

  • "Alas, this camp shall not bequeath another fey beast for another hour and two score minutes!"
With hundreds of Legolas-variations in character names roaming the countryside of games like Everquest 2 and World of Warcraft until recent attempts to thwart the use of "real" fantasy character names, the role playing aspect of the upcoming Middle Earth MMO was never in doubt. How will the game answer concerns of producing a game as friendly to Gandolfs (role players) as BigNukers (pure gamers)? Turbine Dev Floon Beetle weighs in on the issue:

"Role-play is entirely a function of players, not code. Role-play is about people connecting with each other, not with bytes of code or icons. It is about turning what might otherwise be isolated imagination into a shared experience. There are no rules or systems that truly make that more meaningful: it is the personal interaction that makes it significant."

The moral of the story? Give players a world worthy of role-play and see what happens. Sounds good to us! Check out the full article.

  • Orcs and Goblins and Wizards, oh my!
Turbine has posted a look at the Goblins and Orcs of Lords of the Rings Online. I had a dream last night, in black and white no less, that went something like this:

"Where Tolkien has used both the names 'Goblin' and 'Orc' for the race, we've used the terms in the interest of gameplay to represent different types of Orc-kind. 'Orcs' are larger, brawnier creatures, whereas 'Goblins' are smaller, and the sort that might ambush you in dark caverns underground."

  • Please take your hands off of me Mr. Frodo.
Gamers.com has posted a preview of Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar. We were always confused about who was Sauron and who was Sarumon and so was the guy playing the slots machines who suddenly yelled:

"Turbine has developed a very intuitive display for character and party status. There is no text onscreen in normal play. Instead, players' two health stats are described in a two-tone bar along the bottom of the screen. The first (and largest) portion of the bar displays your character's Endurance, which regenerates automatically. The left-most tip is another shade, however; it shows the character's Health, which must be healed magically or through resting in a camp or town."

  • LotRO Insider.
The first installment of Lord of the Rings Online Insider is up and alive at the Official Site . Our Legal Department has strongly advised us not to mention that actor Nick
Nolte was found wandering the streets mumbling the following:

"Welcome to the first installment of our new series, the Thursday Insider. In each Insider, we'll ask some team members to answer a question about themselves, LOTRO, or The Lord of the Rings. You never know what you'll get from the LOTRO team!"

  • Big Black Crows with pointy teeth.
Turbine has posted more creature information for Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar. The creature of choice today is the Crebain. There is a fair to slim chance that they wrote this:

"These menacing black birds from the lands between the Misty Mountains and the dark forest of Fangorn are often controlled by the forces of darkness, acting from above as the eyes and ears of the enemy.  Large and intelligent, flocks of these crow-like creatures darken the skies on their mission of evil.  But be warned – even one Craban is capable of alerting the enemy with the swiftness of the wind. "
