  • Does darkness rise? I thought it fell, like "nightfall". Hmm.

In any case, screenshots of Darkness Rising, the in-development expansion pack for Dark Age of Camelot, are available at Stratics.

In "Darkness Rising," an evil uprising threatens the land and the mightiest heroes in the Realms are called into service. For the first time in "Dark Age of Camelot," players will be able to earn the right to be called a Champion of the Realm. Players become Champions by exploring new zones and revisiting altered lands while investigating the mysterious uprising to discover its sinister underpinnings. By performing this service for their Realm, players achieve new levels of advancement and gain the ability to wield class-specific Champion Weapons. "Darkness Rising" also introduces majestic player-controlled horses and other more fantastic steeds which can be ridden into conflict in the war between the Realms.

  • Fly you very own black flag...

"Strike and heave to if we give ya the gun, else we'll spare nary a one of ya. We ask no quarter and we give none!" That's what a pirate would say, but what would Gamespot say about a pirate MMO?

Set in the raucous 18th century Caribbean, during the heyday of piracy, Pirates of the Burning Sea will let you sail for the major powers of the era (Britain, France, or Spain), as well as for yourself as a, well, pirate. The game will feature both player-versus-player combat and player-versus-environment missions, which will let you build a career as a dread captain on the high seas. The game itself seems to combine the town exploration of a traditional online role-playing game with the stylized world map and travel of Sid Meier's Pirates!, with a real-time ship-combat mode that's almost out of a historically based wargame. As such, it's certainly very different from the traditional online role-playing games, with their foci on fantasy worlds and races, not to mention swords and sorcery.

That and more, you knock-kneed lubber, in the Gamespot preview of Pirates of the Burning Sea, due out end-of-year 2005.

  • If you watched Conan last night, you're probably tired this morning.

But Funcom would rather you sleepyheads gaze upon screenshots of a different kind of Conan, the barbarian sort actually. Impressive new screenshots are up at the official site:

(Ed. note- no description was given, I've got it from an inside source that the Funcom PR guy was pantsed by an mischievous intern as he prepared to enter a desciption, causing him to click "Create Story." And, lord, how we know that these things have a mind of their own once you push that button.

Age of Conan official site screens, get them before Conan comes on!

  • RPPVP on the QT for VIPs
Blizzard has released three new Role Play - PvP servers. Vin Diesel can complete Molten Core alone, with his priest character:

" "Salutations! I, Bokkle, humble tinker and Gnomeregan exile, have come to you with wondrous news! My fellow lovers of lore and spinners of stories, we need wait no longer to find a new home; the path is open to a grand new experience not yet seen in Azeroth! Come, my friends, and rejoice! Let us celebr-eeeeerk!" The troll set his spear aside and looked down upon the tiny, prone body. "Heh. Dat gnome be chattin' so loud, he not see us comin'."

"Heh." A cold smirk came to the Orc's scarred face. "The little chatterbox forgot to watch his back. No magic protects the foolish in these lands. Be on your guard -- enemies could be anywhere!"
The RP-PvP realms are live and available for play! Are you a loremonger seeking gameplay with a little more bite? Look no further! Join Emerald Dream or Maelstrom and defend the realm against your enemies!"
[Ed: Another realm, Twisting Nether, was later opened.]

  • Black Scorpion Meets Hiking Boot.
Boomtown has a profile of one of the upcoming City of Villains bad guys, Black Scorpion. Also mentioned is a female villain, Silver Mantis. P.Diddy, or is it just Diddy, or perhaps P, was stunned and appalled that he was not included as a villain and exclaimed:

" In a continuing effort to provide an assessment of the organization
known as Arachnos and the most significant super-powered threats within
it, I present in this report detailed information regarding the villain
    known as Black Scorpion.

  • I am super powerful, and I choose to wear spandex.
GameSpot has posted a preview of City of Villains giving an overall look at the upcoming game. We asked Martha Stewart if she would be making a guest appearance in the game and she replied as follows:

" Last year, developer Cryptic Studios and publisher NCsoft's City of Heroes helped massively multiplayer online games leap a tall building in a single bound. Previously, online role-playing games usually involved creating a fantasy character and repeatedly beating on skeletons and goblins to earn copper coins, magic swords, and the privilege of beating on larger skeletons and goblins. City of Heroes took massively multiplayer games into the realm of comic-book superheroes by letting you create your very own superpowered do-gooder, complete with superhuman abilities like flight, superspeed, and a whole host of other powerful abilities designed to let you conquer the thugs and criminals of Paragon City, the game's home area. Now, Cryptic and NCsoft are working on their next game, City of Villains, which isn't an expansion pack, but rather, is something of a stand-alone sequel to City of Heroes. You won't need the original game to play City of Villains, but you might want to consider getting both games eventually, especially if you're interested in pitting superheroes against supervillains in player-versus-player battles.
