  • Pwning j00 since November, 2004.
OGaming has posted an Op/Ed titled, Casual vs. Hardcore - The Battle Rages in WoW. Vin Diesel eats 13 casual WoW players per day, washed down with a keg of Brewnall's best:

"The argument is that World of Warcraft was designed for casual gamers yet the end-game is all hardcore content. Casual gamers argue that past level 60, you cannot progress without spending obscene amounts of time in instances, raids, or farming materials/drops for either the Darkmoon Faire (new addition to the age-old argument) or an epic recipe. Here is where the argument gets a little shady on the casual end – there are plenty of instances that can be 5-manned (thus reducing the strain of having to gather 10-15 people for a raid) in around 2 hours. Even casual gamers can set aside 2 hours out of their day/week to go do an instance."

  • Issue #5 - 95 More Until The Cool 100.
Gamespy has posted a preview of City of Heroes: Issue #5. Vin Diesel arrived for some City of Heroes villain arse kicking, but before he started he said:

"The good news for everybody who still fights on the side of law and order is that NCSoft isn't resting on their heroic laurels when it comes to their incredibly fun superhero MMO. Since its release in April of 2004, the game has undergone a steady stream of large-scale content upgrades. Dubbed "issues" in honor of the game's comic book roots, these content upgrades have changed the world of Paragon City, adding limited Player vs. Player in the Arena, new Epic-level powers, the chance to play as the alien Kheldians, and, of course, capes. The latest upgrade prepping for release is "Issue 5 -- Forest of Dread.""

I've had an unusual writer's (I use that term loosely) block while formulating my next article for the site. I've ruled out my lack of a grasp on the language or my lack of sleep as the cause. Maybe it's time to watch a Bruce Campbell movie. That usually puts some crazy ideas in my head.
In the meantime read something funny that I had no part of writing, the MMOG Terminology Guide by Neddie Seagoon.
Now on to the real world. You can't make this stuff up.

    • Spam King Pays Microsoft $7 Million

Old lemurs found in N.Y. zoo. Plans for Disney movie sequel put on hold.
    • Cat Toilet Training Kit

I'm not sure I'd be comfortable using a cat as a toilet, but I'd be willing to try.
    • U.S. Marbles Championship Pays $500 to Winner

Endorsement deals could be worth almost as much.
    • Drunken Pigeons Wreak Havok

Hit on ugly pigeons, fly under the influence, slur their chirps.
    • Lego Archeological Dig

  • Nine out of ten beta testers prefer Dark & Light!
Dark and Light's official site now sports a testamonial from a beta tester, commenting on a recent build. Apparently this MMORPG is going to have more GM involvement in the way of lots of intelligently controlled quests and events. We won't hold our breath, but it is a cool idea.

"The most exiting part though is the events that AD does with us. A recent one I participated in started for a dieing man calling for a long lost love, and ended with us bringing her back from the dead to see him. Little events like this happen throughout the tests with AD controlling the characters. Big ones that involve all the beta testers in big battles have happened too. Another one I recently did had several Darkies trying to cheat a man (A character played by a GM) out of his fortress, and almost succeeded until the lights came to rescue him. After a big battle the light ended victorious, but the man we were guarding didn’t. Poor Dotarius."

  • I'm thinking Queen Antonia ought to know a gnoll from a drakota!
Gamecloud has two more "Everquest 2: Quest for Antonia" finalist interviews for those of you that like to see hot women with give blithe answers to questions about gaming. Before you start with the letters, I think its cool when women play MMORPGs, and I'm sure there's plenty of hot ones that know their stuff. But these ain't it... case in point:

"Gamecloud - Do you play Everquest II yourself or any other PC or video games?

Carin Ashley - Yes, I do play Everquest II and other PC/video games. Everquest II is a unique experience in that it keeps you entertained and challenged at the same time.

Gamecloud - What opportunities do you think will open up for you if you win the Quest For Antonia contest?

Carin Ashley - I think winning the Quest for Antonia will open up many opportunities that I would not otherwise be able to experience without the opportunity provided by such a cutting-edge company as Sony Online Entertainment. You never know the future until you go after the possibilities and from there the opportunities can be endless."

Let's face it: you, like SOE, just want to see some pics. Get your pics here!

  • Man dies. Online games blamed. Personal responsibility takes long, hard kick in the arse.
CNN is reporting that a man has died after playing online games for 50 hours "almost non-stop". The surgeon general has annouced a warning to all South Korean males who quit their jobs to live with their mothers so they can play online games 100% of the time that it might be hazardous to your health.

"After he failed to return home, Lee's mother asked his former colleagues to find him. When they reached the cafe, Lee said he would finish the game and then go home, the paper reported.
He died a few minutes later, it said." [Perhaps not playing the game killed him?]

  • Eternia, not to be confused with Ehernia.
GameSpot is reporting that the Tales of Eternia has begun. This will be Namco's first MMOG. Monty Python studios has raised issue with the carrying of the dead feature, claiming it infringes on their "Bring out your dead...." skit from "They Holy Grail":

"TOEO uses a symbol encounter system similar to the original TOE, wherein the player enters battle mode whenever he or she bumps into an enemy symbol that's moving around the field map. The players fight in real-time using the series' Linear Motion Battle System. Players can perform combination attacks if they execute moves in a certain order in an allotted time span. If the character dies in battle, TOEO's "piggyback system" lets characters carry around the deceased. If they make it to a church, the dead character can be resurrected with no experience penalities."
