Ten Ton Hammer

  • Before I really let loose in this column I always mull over how it will affect others. I'm a sensitive guy. With that in mind I thought it might be time to come up with a disclaimer for the column lest those that don't deserve the hate-mail receiveth it.
The views expressed in Loading... are not necessarily those of, it's agents, garden gnomes, Kirstie Alley, Tom Cruise, Vin Diesel or men who play female characters in World of Warcraft, hereafter referred to as "Manginas". The following program contains scenes of violence, harsh language and sexual content which may not be suitable for younger children.
First and foremost, Happy Birthday to the one and only Phil Comeau, Director of somethingorother at!

I had to sleep on the Loading... topic today. It's never a good thing to write when you are annoyed or otherwise aggravated by a topic. It is difficult to see all sides of the story. After a good night of sleep I believe I had it right all along and it isn't pretty. Imagine Star Jones at an all-you-can-eat buffet or Tom Cruise at a home decorating show focused on closets. Hold that picture in your mind. That's where we are going folks.
It's a topic deserving of a Samuel L. Jackson rant. It's more in your face than Snakes on a Plane, but everyone is afraid to discuss it in case the party involved doesn't talk to them any longer. Guess what? I won't talk to them now, so I've got nothing to lose, and thus it turns to me to spill the beans.
Vin, dog-kabobs, puzzling glances, Brad McQuaid and much more are but a click away.

  • Check out Gandalf vs. Voltron for new information about the Crafting vocations and how they relate

In his second Developer Diary, Lead Systems Designer Nik "Mithril_Miser" Davidson provides more details about the LOTRO Crafting System, including vocations!

I was rather pleased with the response to my first crafting dev diary. It's a subject near and dear to me, and it clearly means a lot to the LOTRO community too. I've always felt that a strong crafting system that allows for dedicated crafters to visibly ply their trades and thus garner a reputation for themselves will be a strong asset to community building in an MMO. Judging by the responses to the system, I see we all basically agree on that, at least. Splendid!

Read more about the crafting system and then stop by the forums at LOTRO Ten Ton Hammer and share your thoughts with us!

  • Colton Burgess Chats With Shacknews

Shacknews brings us a Q&A with Colton Burgess today. This interview gives us a look at the back story of the game, races, the lack of levels and player classes, and more.

In my opinion, wading through all the various MMOs available is beginning to feel like trying to make your way through a crowded street: barely any elbow room, lots of noise, and by the time you've made it to your destination, the headache pulsing through your skull makes you seriously consider if the journey was worth it. Each game is like a street vendor, shouting its praise and promising new features and revamped game play when compared to the other guy, but in the end, each title feels pretty much the same.

Whenever something new comes along, especially something completely unknown and unforeseen, I tend to get a little bit excited. A breath of fresh air! A title that will, perhaps, offer a little bit of newness to its genre, or at least tweak existing trends so that they look fresh when brought to the table.

Enter Thrones of Chaos, currently in development at Loud Ant software LLC.

An MMORPG touting features such as no-holds-barred PvPing and strong guild support, Thrones may end up being a sweet surprise for MMO gamers-- or it may flop when made to go toe-to-toe with venerable giants such as World of WarCraft or EverQuest II. I spoke with the game's producer, Colton Burgess, to find out more about this new contender in the crowded field of online role-playing games.

Read the full interview to learn more about this forthcoming game! Don't forget to head over to the forums right here at Ten Ton Hammer to share your thoughts with us on this and all your favorite MMOs!

  • Will Kiara's Plan Work?

Kiara's at it again. She's been watching too many late night infomercials, because she firmly believes she can find a way to get rich quick in EQ2.

So. I'm poor. Like all the time. I've rarely got a lot of money on me. And when I do, I spend it on silly stuff like spell upgrades and all. Lately, gold sellers have been blanket /telling everyone and their dog. But, even as poor as I always am, I am never tempted.

A couple of weeks ago I tried dressing friends up like little dolls and making them sing showtunes. This didn't work out nearly so well as I had hoped. Point of interest, men don't like to do high kicks.

Find out how Kiara plans to make money. Tell us what you think about her ideas in the forums at EQ2 Ten Ton Hammer.

  • ...To Play a Barbarian

As we continue DDO Top 10 Week at Ten Ton Hammer, we take a look at a handful of the many great reasons to play a barbarian. Battlebeard and Ralsu team up to bring you this exciting list:

    "6. RAGE!
The defining trait of a barbarian is her ability to Rage at least once per day (more depending on number of barbarian levels and Enhancements). Rage boosts STR, CON, and hit points temporarily for a reduction in AC. STR leads to more hits with melee weapons and more damage."

Find out the rest of the reasons to play this interesting class at DDO Ten Ton Hammer. If you play a Barbarian, let us know what you like about it in the forums!

  • New Inofrmation Added

We've gone through our Scholomance guide and updated all of the information to better reflected recent instance changes. Everything from forming your group until the last boss fight has been looked over and updated with even more helpful information!

"When you first enter Scholomance you will find yourself on a set of stairs. This is a safe zone where you are free to buff up and get ready to fight. The entrance to the actual combat area is guarded by two Risen Warders so take those out and open the door. Quickly pull the patrols of Risen Warders who'll come up near the door, into the
room you first walk into. Next, go to the stairs and have your rogue/s sap some of the humanoids down to the left, and your mages sheep pull, deal with the humanoids. Avoid fighting in the main room area since some enemies have an AoE fear which can cause you to aggro several groups of enemies. It's best to fight on the stairs with your melee at the bottom and ranged at the top. Now deal with the group on the other side of the door on the bottom floor."

Head over to WoW Ten Ton Hammer and read the fully updated guide. Be sure to let us know if we forgot anything in the forums!

  • New Preview Posted

The folks over at Tabula Rasa have posted a preview of the forthcoming game on their official site. The preview takes a look at the history of the game, back-story, key features and what we can expect in the near future.

Throughout my massive multiplayer online gaming some of the best moments I’ve experienced were feelings of being a part of a massive war in Sony’s MMOFPS – Planetside. After finishing with Planetside, I started playing World of Warcraft and invested some serious time (3 level 60’s later…). Because of the exposure to both games I couldn’t help feeling that there was room for a game that offered a true feeling of “massive conflict” and shooter style combat whilst having the character depth, questing and classes of a more traditional MMO. You can imagine then, when I found a link to the Tabula Rasa website I was quite excited by the prospect. A Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG) which used First Person Shooter (FPS) style combat!

Keep reading to learn more anbout Tabula Rasa. Are you waiting for this upcoming game? Head over to the forums here at Ten Ton Hammer and share your thoughts with us.

  • Our good man and resident rodeo clown Jeff Woleslagle drove his Shriner's mini-car into Manhattan to parley with Blizzard about, what else, World of Warcraft. Eyes wide and red-nose glued on tight he dragged himself away from the amply endowed geisha girls at the Pokemon conference across the street and sat down with an editor from FHM (which raises the question, why don't we have "The Girls of") to view a demonstration of the upcoming expansion, The Burning Crusade. You can read all about it right here, thankfully in Jeff's own words and not mine.
After two-years of development, which I believe is the Guinness World Record for longest time between launch of a successful MMOG and the release of an expansion what have the finest and most brilliant minds at Blizzard come up with?
The Burning Crusade, random numbers, rodeo clown humour, three new MMOG articles and much more are but a click away.
