  • Shayalyn's Dream Already A Reality?

For Independence Day, Shayalyn was granted the freedom to look beyond Vanguard: Saga of Heroes and design the MMO of her dreams. When she laid out the parameters for her perfect MMO, she realized that her ideas were not exactly visionary. In fact, they were really a bit retro...and had already been envisioned for a modern MMO platform by a company called Sigil Games Online.

"Some of my co-workers tweak me occasionally for my love of the fantasy MMO genre, but I’m unashamed. Fantasy MMOs still have my attention, and probably always will. There’s something about elves and orcs and faeries and goblins that appeals to me. So far, super heroes and sci-fi have yet to capture my imagination. Historical MMOs hold some appeal, but I’m not sure I’d like to be saddled to one particular time period. Right now, I think the only thing that could pull me away from fantasy MMOs might be a game that involved time travel. A Dr. Who MMO? Color me so there! But until there’s a time travel MMO, fantasy is where I find myself drawn."

  • Kiara Seeks Serenity...

Where can you find serenity? In a Firefly MMO of course? Kiara explains her ideas on what would make the perfect MMO, and why the Alliance would be so cool. If you listen hard enough while you are reading her article, you can almost hear the theme song...

So. I've been charged with coming up with my ideal MMO. All sorts of interesting notions come to mind. None of which are fit to print. Okay, well that's really untrue. But it was funny in my head.

I knew the moment I was told the topic for this week what I wanted my ideal MMO to be. I've no notions so grand as mechanics or anything else. I don't have any special desires as to set up or anything else. I'm all about subject matter.

  • Freeing my iMMOGination

Ever think about what would make your perfect massively-multiplayer online game (MMOG)? Ralsu uses Independence Day as an excuse to free his "iMMOGination" and comes up with two ideas for games that would put him on cloud nine.

"I started out by thinking about Dungeons & Dragons Online: Stormreach (DDO) as my basis of comparison. DDO is not a perfect game, but it is the only MMOG to which I subscribe at this time...So, as I sat down to think about my perfect MMOG, I had three key points with which to start:

    1. familiar, tested core system
    2. character customization
    3. prevent griefing

Now I just needed to identify which core system I'd like to see make it to MMOG."

World of Warcraft with a complete guide to the city of Darnassus. Home
to the Night Elves, this city in the trees contains plenty of beauty
and mystery. Our complete guide to Darnassus contains quests, a map,
and lore on this majestic city up in the sky.

"Darnassus is the capital city of Night Elves, proud members of the
Alliance. The city stands within the new world tree, Teldrassil, which
is slowly being tainted with the corruption left behind by the Burning
Legion. That's not the only problem that faces this new city, other
strange magical powers are slowly creeping their way into the homeland
    of the Night Elves."

  • A Game Worthy of Dreams?

For once, this weekly feature doesn't focus on a covered game. Rather, it is about what one perceives to be an ideal game presented in a "features / game info" page format, like what might be found on a game's main site.

"Mystery Unnamed Game brings together the best elements from a variety of game styles and blurs the lines between genres and design philosophies in order to offer comprehensive gameplay options to a broader range of target audiences. Play it how you like it whether it is becoming deeply invested into playing a part in the evolving and on-going story of conflict, or striving to become the best in the realm of organized competition."

•'s personality has been popping up in the darndest places and we don't just mean that whack-a-mole game run by the carnies down the street. First we notice one of our understated, yet blazingly yellow soccer jerseys being worn by Jeff Butler in the Vanguard: SoH "Pic of the Day", then we get news that our own Coyote Sharptongue is the first EverQuest 2 player to be spotlighted in the EQ2 Players Profile.
Some of you are starting your long weekend. Some of you are watching it come to a close. Those of you in Asia are wondering what a long weekend is and those of you in Europe, the home of the siesta and the two-hour work day are liquored up watching World Cup re-runs on a 60 inch plasma television bolted to the 800-year-old blocks of your local pub. It's a holiday for most of the population here in Canada today. I'm looking out my office window at Lake Ontario where at least six boats filled with hung-over fisherman are being circled by two Seadoo Jetskis. I eagerly await the "stray cast" that latches onto one of the Seadoo drivers buzzing the fishing boats. Now that's PvP!

  • New Spells for the Twilight Forge Module

How many features can you fit into an expansion? Well, I think Turbine's DDO team is doing their best to find out! Here is a list of the newly announced spells that they plan to include in the upcoming Twilight Forge Module...

    New Spells for Players

    Niac's Cold Ray
Shoots a ray of ice at your foes; does 1d10 per caster level, max 5d10 (Reflex save negates) cold damage to a single target. Niac's Cold Ray is a level 1 spell for wizards and sorcerers.

This spell unlocks locked doors and chests as if a rogue with a pick locks skill of caster level + ability modifier (where the ability is int for wizards and cha for sorcerers) was attempting to pick the lock. Knock is a level 2 spell for wizards and sorcerers.

    Dimension Door
This spell, castable only in dungeons and adventure areas, creates a door of magical energy. Any member of your party may click on the door to return them to the inside entrance of the area (you will be returned to the inside entrance so you won't take an XP hit for exiting the adventure). There is no waiting time, unlike recalling, and the teleport cannot be interrupted by monsters hitting you. Dimension Door is a level 4 spell for wizards, sorcerers, and bards.

    Wall of Fire
Creates a wall of flames in front of you. Watch and laugh as monsters run into it and burn; don't forget to bring the BBQ sauce. Wall of Fire is a level 4 spell for wizards and sorcerers.

This spell is usable only in town and is designed to lower your time spent traveling. It lets you pick from several destinations useful to wizards and sorcerers (the marketplace, your class trainers, etc). Please be advised that as per D&D 3.5 rules, this spell has a 3% failure rate. Teleport is a level 5 spell for wizards and sorcerers.
