  • Do all heroes have journeys?.
RPGVault has posted a Hero's Journey Peek #5, focusing on one of the creatures, the Targust. Vin Diesel once ran around the world in 22 minutes. He could have done it faster, but he stopped to say this:

"An introduction to the massive, immensely powerful Targust, one of the creatures we'll see in Simutronics' endeavor"

  • Fancy pictures of....darkness.
Voodoo Extreme has some fancy new screenshots of Dark Age of Camelot: Darkness Rising. While travelling through the rainforest, as we are oft to do, we stumbled upon a Voodoo Priestess who poked us with a pin and exclaimed:

" Mythic released the first batch of screenshots showing off the new Champion weapons in the upcoming expansion pack, Darking Rising. Incidently, the models are sporting the new Epic armor design which is now up on Pendragon for testing (not part of the expansion). Kiss that old template you have goodbye! Actually I'm not too sure how great the Epic armor will be; you get it at level 45 so it might not be all that hot. Worst case scenario is that you /salvage it for a small mint (that's where all my old Epic went). "

  • WoW is Wow.
CVG has posted a World of Warcraft interview featuring Shane Dabiri and discussing the "WoW Factor". Tom Cruise confused WoW for War of the Worlds and demanded his own interview. When asked about his relationship with Katie Holmes he replied:

"Last evening we caught our pet cat playing World of Warcraft. As the most evil character in the game - Night Elf Rogue - he was fairing okay at level five although was getting a little confused when we kept telling him we'd assigned auto-run to the pause key (they're ALL paws keys to a cat see - geddit?). But it's testament to the massive, wide-spread penetration (yes, in our increasing effort to get slightly more risqué, we actually said 'PENETRATION') that Blizzard's MMORPG has achieved, with player numbers rocketing into the stratosphere. • It's a deal.
Mythic Entertainment and AGEIA have signed an agreement that will see AGEIA physX technology in the upcoming Warhammer Online title. Donald Trump refused to return our calls regarding this deal, making it unclear if he would have said this:

" Mythic will make extensive use of the AGEIA physX SDK in developing its upcoming MMORPG based on the legendary Warhammer fantasy world. One of the most enduring fantasy games in history, Warhammer will be released as an MMO for the first time in 2007. Players who have PCs equipped with the AGEIA physX processor will experience never-before-seen levels of online immersiveness, along with stunning effects and rich interactivity. "

  • It's Dead Jim.
Jeffrey Anderson, the CEO of Turbine has posted that Asheron's Call 2 will be officially closing on December 30, 2005. Elvis has left the building, but on the way out between bites of a peanut butter and banana sandwich he had this to say:

    " Dear AC2 subscribers,

In spite of our hard work and the launch of Legions, AC2 has reached the point where it no longer makes sense to continue the service. We will be officially closing the Asheron's Call 2 service on 12/30/05. Until then, we plan to run live events, but we will not be adding any content or features.

We deeply appreciate the many dedicated fans of AC2 who have stood by us over the years. You have our sincerest gratitude. "

  • AC2 Gets A Fancy Review.
CVG has reviewed Asheron's Call 2: Legions. Tom Cruise couldn't get any other press to talk to him today so he came to us and said this:

" At last count, AC2 was existing on around 14,000 subscribers, despite recent attempts by Turbine to woo players back to the franchise following its acquisition of the brand from Microsoft. Unfortunately, the reasons why most of them left in the first place are beyond the ken of a mere expansion pack (unless that expansion pack is called Asheron's Call 2: World Of Warcraft). Legions is one for the existing crowd only, bringing all the new content you'd expect of an MMO add-on pack - new weapons, new spells, new armour, new dungeons and quests and a whole new continent called, ahem, Knorr. • Henry Ford might turn over in his grave...

But he wasn't the only inspiration behind the motive MMOG Auto Assault! Learn how Auto Assault evolved conceptually and what it draws from the legends of the MMOG genre in this new sit-down session with Auto Assault Project Lead Scott Brown!

Q : Apart from the obvious, what would you say influenced you in the development of Auto Assault? Not just in a broad sense either - were there any games, movies, or what-have-you that had a direct bearing on some aspect of the game?

Scott Brown : I don't know that there is a direct influence on the game - so many different people's ideas and backgrounds have shaped the game into what it is today. We have wanted to do a car combat MMO for a long time and setting it in a post-apocalyptic universe just makes sense thanks to movies like Mad Max and games like Wasteland and Fallout.

  • Because, let's face it, nobody has heard of World of Warcraft.
Computer Gaming World has reviewed World of Warcraft. Both people who have not yet played WoW read the following:

" Rather than focus on a bunch of explicit, boring tutorials, WoW teaches you the ropes and eases you into the game so slyly that you'll barely even notice you're in school. Instead of pitched battles against rabbits, cats, rats, and other tiny animals that you could kill in real life without much effort, the game immediately pits you against actual monsters. Garden-variety animals exist--you're just not expected to fight them. They merely hop around and occasionally get devoured by a passing predator. Since there aren't any artificial zone boundaries, you're free to wander wherever you want to right from the start, which removes the penned-in feeling common to low-level characters in most other MMORPGs. "

  • Another huggy, kissy message, compliments of China.
Anti-Japan War Online, yes, you read it right folks. PowerNET Technology and the China Community Youth League are going to produce a game called, Anti-Japan War Online. Godzilla seen heading towards the mainland in retaliation:

" Shanghai.  August 23.  INTERFAX-CHINA - PowerNet Technology, a Chinese online gaming firm, has developed a new online game in cooperation with the China Communist Youth League (CCYL) named "Anti-Japan War Online," which will begin commercial operation by the end of 2005, a PowerNet official said Tuesday.
"The game will allow players, especially younger players, to learn from history. They will get a patriotic feeling when fighting invaders to safeguard their motherland," a PowerNet Project Manager, surnamed Liu, told Interfax.
The background for "Anti-Japan War Online" is the Japanese invasion of China during World War II, from 1937 through 1945. Players are able to play simulations of key battles, but will only be able to play as the Chinese side. Players will also not be allowed to kill other players in the game. In addition, fighting in the game between Japanese and Chinese soldiers will be shown only in miniature, so as to reduce the violence level of the game, Liu said.
The new massive multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) will begin internal testing later this August, with commercial launch of the game expected in 2005. The online game is based on PowerNet's self-developed game engine.
The CCLY said in statement that few games on the Chinese market today generate a "national spirit" that can educate young players. As a result, the CCYL will actively partner with online gaming companies to jointly develop "patriotic" online games.
"'Anti-Japan War Online' is a patriotic online game that is both interesting and instructive, and can attract and guide young players," Chen Xiao, the CCLY official in charge of partnerships with online gaming firms, told Interfax. "We will pay close attention to the authenticity of historical facts in the game."
In 2004, CCYL also formed a partnership with Guangdong Data Communication Network Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Guangdong Telecom to begin developing a 3D MMORPG named "Guohun Online" ("National Spirit Online") in 2005. Approximately RMB 50 mln (USD 6.17 mln) has been invested in the development of "Guohun Online," which is currently being developed with technical support from Chinese online gaming firm TQ Digital. Commercial operation of "Guohun Online" is expected in the second half of 2005.
In addition, CCYL is also currently working with Beijing Magical Digit Co., Ltd. to develop three other online games, titled "Sim Battle: Long March", "Sim Battle: Blue Helmet China" and "Sim Battle: Sky Dragon.""
