Sci-Fi Reality show meets the massively multiplayer online game market. Play the game while others watch you as part of a television program. Virtual celebrities. Virtual drama. Virtual death and suffering. What could be more entertaining?
A long time ago, when the Earth was green, and there were more kinds of animals than you've ever seen... O.K. it wasn't that long ago, and the Irish Rovers were not involved, but I mentioned a crazy idea of mine to a close friend who was working with me at GameStats. I thought it would be fantastic if people were able to watch others play MMOGs live on television. Virtual voyeurs would be a hit show. I was sure of it.
My pal told me that my idea was not new at all and that I should pick up a copy of Dream Park by Larry Niven. He was right. The idea wasn't new, but I was sure it was still good. On top of that I was encouraged to read an excellent book. One that I later purchased as a signed first edition.
It appears that Ron Howard and Halo mastermind Alex Seropian agree. They are working on a sci-fi reality show called XQuest. Businessweek had this to say:
"Other big directors are glomming onto MMOGs. Imagine Entertainment, the company run by Ron Howard and Brian Grazer that created the TV show 24, has teamed up with producer Jim Banister, Halo creator Alex Seropian, and others to develop a sci-fi reality show called XQuest. If it flies, contestants will occupy a cramped spaceship-like module for a month. Its flight simulators will subject them to rocket-like conditions, including six Gs of thrust. Players will ply the galaxy while following the rough contours of a plot. Outside the ship, online gamers will track the crew's mission and ultimately board their own PC-based spaceships to rendezvous with contestants in shared, simulated space. The next season's cast, in theory, is chosen from those who show the most skill playing the game at home."
Think about it for a few minutes. You could be playing games to entertain others. Then again, you probably already are.

Here's what's new on the network!
- Star Wars Galaxies (NGE) Review: A New Hope?
"In a move dubbed NGE or "New Game Enhancements" SOE / LucasArts re-launched its ailing MMORPG Star Wars Galaxies for the second time last November. Despite a wave of angry criticism from the alternately hopeful and disillusioned subscriber community, both licensor and licensee maintain that subscription numbers have steadily risen since the change. We tell the somber story of the MMORPG that was supposed to bring our brand of gaming into the mainstream two years ago, then lighten things up a bit with a review of the game as it stands today."
- Auto Assault: Character Creation and You
"With magic of course! Well not really, but I like to think it's magic! Auto Assault has a fully featured character creation section.
It has all of the things you expect, hair style, name, class, race, and much more. Some of these things can be confusing and if you are like me you need a lot of time to think on it. So that's why we have a new quick guide today all about character creation."
- DDO: A Guide to Stormreach Port
"After completing the tutorial, the first thing new characters in Dungeons & Dragons Online (DDO) will experience is the bustling port of Stormreach. Riches and fame await the savvy adventurer. Our guide to the port area points out important NPCs and describes some of the quests and awards that DDO newbies will not want to miss."
- DDO Build: The Highway Bandit
"How do you build the perfect bandit? Add 6 parts fighter, 4 parts rogue and shake well. If a sneaky rogue hybrid is what you’re planning for your Dungeons & Dragons Online character, we have the perfect recipe for treachery in this multi-classed build."
- LotRO: Noob Journal #3
"Poor Nafakia! Our little night elf noob is trying to learn her way around MMOGs so that she'll be prepared when Lord of the Rings Online (LotRO) launches later this year. How's she doing? Well, she's learned that gnarlpines pack a mean wallop with a shovel, and karma bites."
- Vanguard: The Downfall of a MMO
"In today's editorial, Eliana takes a look at a current hot topic from the Official Vanguard Forums. The question posed on the thread is "Which MMO were you the most disappointed to see fail?". She looks to find the reasons why some games just cease to entertain us. Add your Take on this by following the link to our forums at the end of each article."
- Auto Assault: Beta Journal #2
"This week we present to you the second beta journal from Xerin.
Last time we went through the newbie content and fought a giant epic spider. This week we explore through the next highways content. What exactly is in this next highway? Tanks, heliocopters, and lots of trips to the repair shop. Oh, and of course neat quests and fun adventuring."
- DDO: Barbarian Class Guide
"What takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin'? A barbarian, of course. In Dungeons & Dragons Online, this class stands out when it comes to absorbing damage. If you're thinking of playing a barbarian, there's no better way to prepare than by reading our handy (and recently updated) class guide. You'll learn about the barbarian's important abilities, feats, skills and enhancements."
- DDO: Quest Journal #2
"If you'll be seeking your fame in Stormreach, the majestic setting for Dungeons & Dragons Online, you'll want to keep up with Shayalyn and Ralsu. These two explorers will share their quest journals in the weeks ahead, revealing information any adventurer will need to make his way in the city."
Now on to the real world. You can't make this stuff up.
