  • RF Online gets a physical, courtesy of Boomtown.
Iain Lowson of Boomtown took time away from stroking his cat to review RF Online.

"Doc, the cat in question, likes me playing RF Online because she gets to sit on my lap and get stroked. This is because I have nothing better to do than stroke the cat when playing RF Online – the only game I’ve ever played where I died regularly because I kept forgetting I was playing. "

  • MTV discovers another non-music channel.
Stephen Totilo of MTV.com has delved deep into the music archives to write an article about weather in World of Warcraft.

"Kaplan said Blizzard's weather team — game designers accustomed to being the godlike architects of the worlds they create — talked about a system that would have them decreeing the weather day by day, but opted to set up a program and leave the weather patterns to computerized number-crunching. "If we were to sort of handpick the weather for each day, we would probably do it in such a way that you wouldn't notice that someone was handpicking it, in which case it's like, 'Why go through that trouble in the first place?' " Kaplan said."

The TenTonHammer.com podcast, Episode #2 should be online today. In fact, it may be online by the time you read this. If not, just keep checking in at Podcast.TenTonHammer.com and we'll let you know when it hits the virtual airwaves. Barring any catastrophic problems it should be there by the afternoon at the latest.
We had a lot of fun creating this show. It gave Jeff, Nicole, Phil and I the opportunity to talk about games and aspects of games that we don't get a lot of time to explore. For those of you who will surely ask, the advertisements in our first two episodes were both by TenTonHammer.com stalwart Neddie Seagoon.
One of the games that we were fortunate to discuss was Warhammer Online, a Games Workshop IP that Mythic Entertainment is now developing. I admit that I played the Warhammer Fantasy miniatures game. I enjoyed it immensely, but unfortunately for me, finding someone else, or even more difficult a group of someone elses that also played the game was trying at best.
Granted the MMO experience won't hold much resemblance to the the experience of playing the miniature game, but it will have the same backstory; a dark, sordid tale where as our editor Phil Comeau puts it, "There are two sides, evil and less evil."
The game pits two factions against each other in Realm versus Realm combat, a Mythic specialty. The backbone of this title, from head to toe, is the war between the factions. On one side we have the Chaos (demons), Dark Elves and Orcs. On the other side, The Empire (human), High Elves and Dwarves. Those of you who have never opened a Games Workshop codex may be cringing at the thought of yet another fantasy MMO, but believe me when I tell you, these races are not as Tolkien penned them.
I'm going to see if I can get one of the Mythic team on the phone for an interview. Worst case, I'm sure one of them can find time to answer some e-mail questions. If you have been walking the floors, sleepless and sighing, worrying about what this game is going to be like, be sure to get your questions in. I'll ask them, no matter how silly they may be. Silly is my specialty.
Congratulations to "Phatty", now known as Phat Ty on winning a fancy prize. Phatty was kind enough to send us in a question, about Warhammer Online no less, that we used on the show. You could win next week. Get those questions in!

Thanks to the good folks at Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment, the developers of StarGate Worlds for the front page link to Ten Ton Hammer. I'm as excited about this game as I've been about any MMO in a long time.
Have you hammered out a question or comment? (.mp3 format if you want bonus points in the swag give away) Send them in.

  • Springtime for Vanguard...

Merriandra, one of the great writers at the Vanguard - TenTonhammer community site, has graced us with some great fan fiction. Rain and Roses begins in a tavern called The Weary Arms in New Targonor.

It was true enough, she thought, that the day had dawned bright with more than the prospect of sunshine. At mid-morning, several merchant ships dropped anchor in the harbor, arrivals spurred by the advent of fair weather. The Weary Arms had seen a steady trade, brisk enough so that she had been unable allow herself even a moment for thoughts of her past, or her future.

    Each Wednesday the story continues...

  • Ready for Auto Assault’s launch on 4/13?

Xerin, over at Auto Assault - TenTonHammer community site, has a brand new section called the Human Starting Guide. Thought humans were the "boring" race to play? Not so! Being the race least well suited to the wastelands but the most adaptive, humans have some very cool tech, not to mention a few tricks up their sleeve.

This guide goes over everything you need to know to start as a human, including the lore, information on hazard modes and racial abilities, and guides to the various classes. Be sure to check in soon for a full walkthrough of Ark Bay 313 and the Hestia Back Range!

To use your hazard mode, simply activate the /!\ hazard button in your lower left hand side, next to the INC button. Once activated you will have a short time with your new found incredible power. Drive into as many things as possibly, blowing them to smithereens. Let nothing stand in your path of justice, destroy everything possible. Once it’s down, it’ll be a long time before it’s available again. So make the most out of it.

Ride on down to Auto Assault at TenTonHammer to find out all that humanity has to offer you freelancer!

  • Trouble Brewing for the Talenta Halflings

Enter episode three of DDO - TenTonHammer's weekly comedy series, "Enter the Halfling." Trouble plagues the talenta halflings as Cailag endures torment-by-pastry while Pigface fumbles through a bleary-eyed game of Fuzzy Duck at the Wayward Lobster Ale-lympics. Looks like it's up to Preston to save Cailag from his grim fate...with a little help.

Preston looked across the bar. What would Cailag want him to do--cheer Pigface to glory at the Ale-lympics; or rescue him? And in what order? He muttered something unintelligible, then stepped outside into the night air. Finally, he decided; he would let Pigface seek his title while he, Preston, went off in search of their companion. This was a job for steady (and moderately sober) hands.

  • Dusktreaders has new lore!

“We were sailing from Treffaren to bring goods north to Kellathin. At night we had dropped anchor to prevent running ashore in the fog. I think half the crew was dead before we knew the pirates were even on board. With black powder in the hold, I knew I had to jump overboard when the fire started. Really, the black powder saved me.”

It's a good story so while you're waiting for the WoW servers to come up, go check it out!

  • Druids Grove has an interview with Associate Designer Michael Mann.

    2. What differentiates druids from the other arcane casting classes? How are they unique?
The Druid is unique from other arcane casters in many ways. Not only does he have the ability to cast some of the highest damage spells in the game, he has a small healing capability and a strong line up of support abilities. On top of this he has the ability to summon natural elementals to fight for his cause. The elementals aren’t always around and go back to the earth once their fight is over, but it really pulls you into the feeling that you are actually communicating with nature and that is very unique.
