Congratulations to the TenTonHammer.com EverQuest 2 guild who reached guild level 30 yesterday. Huzzah!
The MMO genre has never been touted as being a highly innovative segment of the gaming industry, necessarily so, because of the large budgets required to create one of these titles. With so much capital at risk companies have been hesitant to take their designs outside of the comfortable sandbox that they recognize appeals to MMO subscribers.
Enter NCSoft, a Korean company that publishes both City of Heroes
and City of Villains
. Two games that for all intents and purposes are one. NCSoft and the developer Cryptic started with City of Heroes
, a title that puts you in the boots and tights of a superhero. Elves? Dwarves? Not a chance! This game was a refreshing change from the fantasy backdrop that nearly every MMO entertained.
Players loved being a hero, but if there are heroes then there are necessarily villains. NCSoft and Cryptic listened to their supporters and City of Villains
was born. Super hero or super villain, you had your choice. City of Villains
was shown off at E3 2005 and though it appealed to me, time constraints and the gorillas that are World of Warcraft
and EverQuest 2
, kept me from plunking down my dollars on a monthly basis.
This wasn't the case for many MMO players who embraced City of Villains
as they had embraced its predecessor. A large, vocal and vibrant community surrounds this title and they are about to be amazed.
You see, they will be receiving an expansion soon. An expansion that from the outside looking in, seems to be nothing short of extraordinary. Not only is this expansion filled with fresh new content, but it is, wait for it, free!
A well designed game. A tight-knit community. A free expansion. I sound like an advertisement for the game, but rest assured noone from NCSoft or Cryptic has coerced me into this writing this column. The fact is, I'm excited about a game, and in a genre that has been run over, kicked in the rear and sent home with no supper by World of Warcraft
that is a tremendous feeling.
Jeff and Nicole got up close and personal with the next City of Villains expansion
at the recent Game Developers Conference. Here is the introduction.
" NCSoft / Cryptic invited the press to check out Issue 7 live and in-person at GDC 2006, to which we said, "Hellz yea!" If you were under the impression this is just another kitchy free expansion, let me just say that I've seen retail expansions for major games that don't offer nearly as much. We've tacked the feature-packed "final" fact sheet onto the bottom of this sheet, but let me add my awestruck tenor to the fray."
Oh, there is one other game that I'm looking forward to as well, and it will be sitting on store shelves soon, but that's another column...

- Dungeons and Dragons Online: Mind Bending Magic - Enchantments in DDO
"Sometimes it's easy to get caught up in doing the most damage possible with spells in Dungeons & Dragons Online: Stormreach (DDO). But Darkgolem shows us that sometimes the best use for spell points in DDO is enchantments. In "Mind-bending Magic," we learn just what enchantments are, what they do, and how to use them to our fullest advantage."

Many people located in many different countries jump at the chance of making real dollars for online property. Slide takes us behind the scenes of popular business properly nicknamed "farming" and "plat selling". There was a farmer had a coin and platinum was its name-o."

- EverQuest 2: The Dangling Carrot
"Loyalty is the word in the realm of MMO's. We pick a game, and will defend it til our last dying breath if we have to. People play their game, easily for months, and frequently, for years without a thought of walking away. What does Everquest II have that keeps us hitting that "accept" button and logging in? Well, besides the hawt Barbarian toons, Savanja, does have a few ideas. Walk with her, and chat about the greatness that is EQ2!"

- Guild Wars: Chasing The Carrot

- Vanguard: Saga of Heroes - Chasing Rainbows
"Competition, is it what drives today's MMO players to keep playing? How much competition and in what forms is healthy for an MMO to keep their player base happy?"
- Auto Assault: Carrot on a Flamethrower
"This week's common content editorial is all about what makes ushopeful to play Auto Assault. Well find out from Xerin's perspective in this week's editorial Carrot on a Flamethrower. Crispy grilled carrots not included!"
