Ten Ton Hammer

  • Richard Allen Garriott, executive producer, NCsoft® North America, will be honored with this year's Game Developers Choice Award for Lifetime Achievement. A respected pioneer of the computer gaming world and best known for his monumental game series Ultima, Garriott will be recognized for fueling the presence of Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games (MMORPG) in the mass market. The iconic game maker, known in the industry as Lord British, is credited with being a giant force within the gaming community. Produced and hosted by the Game Developers Conference (GDC) and presented by the International Game Developers Association (IGDA), the 6th annual Game Developers Choice Awards ceremony will take place on Wednesday, March 22 at the San Jose Civic Auditorium.

Since I'll be there I'll make sure to take pictures! It always seems odd when someone so young gets a lifetime achievement award. You expect someone who's been doing his craft for a hundred years to grab it. Ahhh how time flies. This industry is still so very young.

FOX News has discovered massively multiplayer games. I don't think there is a person reading this who believes even for a second that this revelation by FOX is a good thing. My favourite quote is this,

"So-called massively multiplayer online games, such as "World of Warcraft," accounted for more than half of the subscription sales in 2005 while one-fifth came from casual games. The remainder was split among sports, strategy, first-person shooter and children's games."

WoW is a "So-called" massively multiplayer game. That's fantastic! I guess that's like FOX is a so-called news network.
How long can it really be before FOX is delivering virtual reality television to MMOGs? Molten Core Survivor or perhaps Big Brother, Qeynos Edition are coming your way.
MMOGs need a new name. Your so-called message goes here.

You probably aren't going to understand a word they are saying. The Everquest 2 TenTonHammer staff put together a few of our favorite PvP terms you'll see, and what they mean...to us."

  • New Issue 7 Screenshots!

TenTonHammer bring you a brand-new five spot of screens from the next big thing to hit Paragon City, virtual home of Cryptic Studios' popular City of Heroes & City of Villains MMOs. We introduced the free CoV expansion "Issue 7" last week with sundry screens and a movie from the storyline-heavy "Grandville" and the Pvp-packed zone "Recluse's Victory," now we have some new screens detailing the 300+ missions found in Issue 7. These "Deadly Manifest" missions include new "custom missions," and are designed to take players from level 40 to level 50.

In order to survive, every villain must decide whom to trust among the many factions that exist in the Rogue Isles, each hoping to advance their agenda without displeasing Lord Recluse. After spending time on all the islands, one thing each villain reaching a high threat level will begin to discern is a strange pattern of mutations across the region. For example, the Arachnoids found across Grandville are no natural beasts. What are these grotesque creatures and where do they come from?

That, and (judging from the screenshot) airport security just isn't what it used to be! Check out the rest of what City of Villains Issue 7 has to offer right here at TenTonHammer!

  • It's not a surprise or a secret that I've become a Perpetual Fangrrl. I like what they're doing and I believe in the products that they're creating. Gods & Heroes looks just flat out amazing and even though I haven't seen anything solid from Star Trek Online yet I am that much of a fan of both the genre and the developer that I'm already hooked. So I troll the G&H boards with regularity. This is the offering for today. Deo's Space Blog for 3/8/06 In it he speaks about the deal with Sony and some new features of the game.

Now as far as the announcement of the god system change, I found out about the change several weeks ago and I talked it over with a couple of people internally. After thinking about it, we realized that the changes were so significant that it would require a massive revamp of the “gods” section of the website. At the time our new web designer, Will, hadn’t started with the company and was at least a week or two out from starting. I had already begun work on all the written revisions of the new website and we had established an internal official launch date of the new website, so the decision was made to simply hold off on that announcement until we launched the new design. This was my call and due to all the factors combined, I still believe it is the best one.

It leaves me wondering if I should send over cookies and chocolate milk with a note begging to let me into a beta. Any beta will do!
