Ten Ton Hammer

  • GameCloud has a Pre-E3 Gods and Heroes article up for your viewing pleasure.

The game itself is action oriented with just a little turn based gameplay in order to keep it from being a totally twitch based title. In watching the developers play the game itself it's clear that there will be some massive conflicts in Gods and Heroes. In one scene our group of characters encounters a city siege from the outside with Roman troops firing catapults and aiming their arrows against the enemy which includes huge giants that were seen throwing unlucky troopers around like rag dolls. Another mytholgical creature we saw in action was the three headed dog the Chimera who uses all three heads to make you and anyone else he doesn't like into mince meat.

I've seen the news and the news is good. They also state that Perpetual will be handling all aspects of the game. SOE will simply PR, Market and Distribute the game.

  • Well I'll be darned.

There will be a more in-depth announcement coming soon but, in the meanwhile, I wanted to let our community know that this is not an error. Existing users can now open up their Account Manager and their accounts will now be working, allowing them to play Shadowbane for free! This does include those who had previously canceled accounts!

If you've never played Shadowbane, you can download the client from Fileplanet. What does this mean for Shadowbane? I'm curious to see how they will be able to continue to fund the game without subscription plans or retail pricing.

First off, if you haven't visited the DDO Tavern Pick-up Lines Randomizer, then you better get your sorry self over there right now. You'll laugh. You'll cry.
Macleans has posted an insightful article on gold farming and how it affects an online game. This is the first non-gaming print magazine article that I have read that has hit the topic dead-on and explained it to non-gamers in a way that should make perfect sense.

"So what? you might think; these are just games. Except they aren't. Any place where thousands of people can move about trading goods and building property and killing people and so on is not a game, it is a world, and its residents are not players but members of a community. It is probably no longer terribly useful to divide the world into "virtual" and "real" aspects, as the realm of atoms and the realm of bits become drawn into an integrated system of technologies, institutions, and cultural products. We don't yet have a good name for this new world -- the "metaverse" and the "technium" are two attempted coinages -- but if gold farming is any indication, we have a good sense of what it will be like. For better and for worse, it will be just like the old world, but more so."

Gold farming isn't going away any day soon, but perhaps if enough people voice their opinion servers will appear that are strictly enforced.
There's gold in them thar games. Yosemite Sam says.

    • Guild Wars: Backstage Pass - Adventures in Seattle

"Recently, ArenaNet hosted a press event at the Sci-Fi Museum in Seattle. I attended the event, and share the details of my trip with you in this personal editorial."
    • Dungeons and Dragons Online: Tavern Pickup Line Resource

"So you've had your fill of high adventure for the day, and you just want to heal up and let off some steam in the local tavern, right? Suddenly you fasten your gaze on a foxy elf / strapping barbarian across the room. Your guildmates might call you directionally-challenged, they might call you a little weak in the character sheet department, but they can never say your one to pass up a promising encounter. You set down your tankard, slide off your stool with a flurry, and saunter towards the apple of your eye. But as you arrive and his/her eyes drift to yours, you realize... you've got nothing. That's where TenTonHammer comes in, my friend. We've got pages and pages of one-liners to help you improve your in-game game!"
    • Vanguard: Saga of Heroes - New Artwork - Dreadknight

    • Dungeons and Dragons Online: Blessed Too Much - Tavern Etiquette

"A dwarf walks into a bar...A good many jokes start with some variation on that theme, but it's no joke when you're unable to enjoy Dungeons & Dragons Online due to a few inconsiderate buffoons in the taverns. Darkgolem, in the guise of his gruff dwarf character, Thrumm, takes on the topic of tavern etiquette in an editorial that would make Emily Post proud."
    • World of Warcraft: City Guide - Ironforge

"Not only is Ironforge the proud home city of World of Warcraft's dwarves and gnomes, its travel hub status and close proximity to high-end instances makes Ironforge a common destination for Alliance characters of any level. Get to know the Alliance's main midget-filled municipality with TenTonHammer's newest guide, which features a little Ironforge history, a conveniently-labelled map, directions to get to Ironforge for all the Alliance races, and a comprehensive quest list."
    • Vanguard: Saga of Heroes - The Guild Beyond The Game

"A new  5 part series begins today on the History of Guilds, both in the real world and in MMO's."

  • Improve your in-game game!

So you've had your fill of high adventure in Dungeons & Dragons Online: Stormreach for the day, and you just want to heal up and let off some steam in the local tavern, right? Suddenly you fasten your gaze on a foxy elf / strapping barbarian across the room. Your guildmates might call you directionally-challenged, they might call you a little weak in the character sheet department, but they can never say your one to pass up a promising encounter. You set down your tankard, slide off your stool with a flurry, and saunter towards the apple of your eye. But as you arrive and his/her eyes drift to yours, you realize... you've got nothing.

That's where TenTonHammer comes in, my friend. We'll toss you a perfect, randomly-generated icebreaker (courtesy of the TenTonHammer Randomizer) to set the mood!

Here's a sampling (though we recommend extreme caution when using any of Ethec's lines!):

    - Someone better contact the Sovereign Host, I think they're missing an angel!
    - No, I'm not Warforged, but you're not the first to mistake me for a machine... a love machine, that is!
    - Did one of you ladies finish a quest? I'm the reward.
    - Look… a rogue! You better give your heart to me before he tries to steal it!

And, sadly, there's plenty more where that came from at DDO - TenTonHammer!

  • A backstage pass for the next Guild Wars expansion...

Last week, ArenaNet hosted a Factions preview party at the Sci-Fi Museum in Seattle. There's lots of press on the event, some of which you can find at Penny Arcade, Gamespot, and Skewed. The big news announced at the event was the April 28th release date for Guild Wars: Factions, but there was a lot more going on than just speeches.

Our very own Samyel was lucky enough to attend the event. You can read all about my adventures traveling, exploring Seattle, and (most importantly!) getting to meet the real faces behind Guild Wars. Read it at Guild Wars - TenTonHammer!

  • We'll teach you how to fix your favorite rocket launcher!

How about where to find some duct tape to fix up some armor you found? Don’t worry! We now have a crafting section that contains all of the information to truly fix up your ride. Today’s update includes the basics on crafting and how to gather materials to begin your life as a tradesman. Check in frequently for more information on crafting, such as how to break, fix, and upgrade an item!

Ah, crafting. To create weapons, armor, and gadgets to blow your enemies to smithereens and survive their onslaught. Crafting is generally a simple endeavor in most MMORPGs. You take your materials and you make your item. After you’ve made enough items you get a skill point. When you’ve “earned” enough skill points then you can make new items. Eventually after enough of this you can make items people truly desire. Auto Assault doesn’t follow this tired and traditional way of crafting that has been rehashed since the beginning of online gaming. Instead it goes with a unique approach that delivers an in-depth crafting system that provides an interesting twist to item rarity.

  • Rogue-in' it Up!

Like to play games of hide n' sneak? Then your class of choice in Dungeons and Dragons Online: Stormreach is probably the rogue. Orogurath tells you how to stay alive, impress your teammates, and give good stealth in this handy guide.

Staying alive and healthy is best done by liberal use of your hide/sneak skill. Even in the thick of combat, you can hide and reduce the likelihood that certain mobs will target you. This will reduce the aggro you generate and allow you to escape more easily from danger. You should rarely attack first. Sometimes your group will ask you to Sap a mob or try for a critical against a sleeping monster, but most of the time, you should be finishing fights, not starting them.

  • An "unbiased" look at EverQuest 2's newest expansion...

Coyotee Sharptongue, on his journey for the truth, interviews Penny Arcadia to get an unbiased and journalistic view on the Kingdom of Sky. Or is it a stab at "independent" sites that push the flavor of the day by unfairly criticizing competing MMOGs? Hrmm.

“Wait a minute.” He asks, looking up from his readings. “Are you affiliated with PoP by chance?”

“That’s not the POINT Coyote!” Penny Arcadia says, smacking her fist into her hand for emphasis. “The point is, Kingdom of Sky – Norrath on whole is a bland, poorly designed, poorly contrived world made by unimaginative gods! Unlike Planet of PhysicalCombatMaking, which is too glorious for words! And on sale this month at a vendor near you!” She adds quickly with a toothy smile as the reporter struggles to get the microphone away from her.

“Will..you..give ..me..” Coyotee stammers as he pulls the device free. “Are you telling me, that your opinion of Norrath, is in no way influenced by your close association with…with this parallel universe?” He frowns as he waits for a response.”
