  • A little bit goes a long long way. This is probably the fifth interview from the DICE summit on these famous brothers. Is there anything new to see? Not really, however, it's always interesting to see what they have to say.

GameSpy: During your presentation, you talked about how in the early days of gaming you could just throw a piece of software in a plastic baggie and make a lot of money. Games could have a sole creative designer behind everything. We've definitely moved away from that! Let me ask you both: do you think that's a loss for the gaming industry?

Robert Garriott: Well, there's a lot of give and take in any sort of business. In some ways there's a loss in terms of immediacy and creativity, and it's hard to get your creative output out there. Versus "back in the old days." But there's also a gain, and that gain is the quality of the production. There's no question, you ask anyone today - "Auto Assault or Akalabeth?" and the choice is obvious. There's so much more in a game now than what we ever expected. And the price is about the same! The costs have gone up - from six weeks in a closet, which is how Richard made Akalabeth, versus a hundred person team for several years - the costs are astronomical. And the quality is astronomical. And yet the price! Akalabeth was $35. And now the price is $50...

Late Edit: After writing my Loading... today I went through my mail to find the following:
Into the Sunset by Niborea of our Vanguard Community.
Niborea's father passed away on Tuesday. Her tribute to him deserves top billing, ahead of any comment I may have on any topic.

There are so many topics to cover in this industry and so little time to do so.
Sony Online Entertainment or SoE as we media piffity-puffity types like to call them, recently announced their Station Access Collection. Not since the Shadows of Luclin expansion (SOL) for EverQuest have gamers had as obnoxious an abbreviated name as the new SAC from Sony. So, here's the deal on SAC. Sony has taken EverQuest Evolutions, EverQuest 2, Star Wars Galaxies, The Matrix Online and Planetside and dropped them into one box for one price. Players can partake in all of those games for one monthly fee. The Station Access pass has been around for a while and many gamers like the option of having a few games at their disposal for one monthly fee.
The problem of course, is that with the possible exception of EverQuest 2 which has its own issues those games are all very old, suspiciously unpopular or unable to make a go of it on their. Hats off to SoE for putting the virtual respirator on these games so that the folks who enjoy them can continue to play.
Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment held their first press conference regarding StarGate Worlds, MMO based on one of the very few television shows that I watch, StarGate SG-1. The game is currently in pre-production, a fancy term for "We're not making it yet." Very little was disclosed at the press conference that would be considered news to anyone who has ever played a MMOG. One tidbit that did catch my eye was that the game would be based on the entire Stargate universe, including the recent addition, Atlantis.
I can't imagine a more open-ended, MMOG perfect setting than the Stargate universe. From the team setup to the premise that each show is about a mission just seems to reek of MMOG. It also breaks from the fantasy enviroment that saturates the current crop of MMOGs. The fact that the Stargate takes them to new and unexplored places should give the creative minds on the project a lot of leeway in creating interesting and challenging areas for players to explore. I'm as excited about the possibilities for this title as I have ever been about any MMO. What do you think? Is there a better backdrop out there than the Stargate universe? • The famed comedy writer Coyotee Sharptongue makes his TenTonHammer debut by riding along with Qeynos finest to clean up the streets of Nettleville Hovel. Read all about Norrath's favorite reality TV show while examining the rampant crime in EverQuest 2.

“I'm Captain Hastings and this is Guard Ashburn. We belong to the Nettleville district of the Qeynos Guard.” The first of the men introduces, drawing a quick nod of confirmation from his counterpart.

“This place has always been a “red candle” district if you know what we mean.” Hastings informs grimly as the two men begin walking.

  • Warriors of Light: Cleric Tactics in DDO

Darkgolem offers up his guide to playing the cleric class in Dungeons & Dragons Online: Stormreach (DDO) to its fullest advantage. Do you know when to hurt, and when to heal? Or when it's appropriate to use damage spells? Find out as DDO Ten Ton Hammer's resident power-gamer shares his secrets.

Don’t forget the benefits of using your shield in combat. A cleric out of spell points and support abilities can draw the attention of foes scattered from a melee by hitting them then backing off, raising his shield, and keeping them centered on himself until his melee friends can deal with them. You’d be surprised at how effecting the damage reduction of a raised shield can make you a defensive bulwark.

  • Gangster tactics in the Gulch!

World of Warcraft @ TenTonHammer gets queued up for some PvP action in the popular battleground instance, Warsong Gulch. This capture-the-flag style battle between 10-man crews from the Horde and Alliance will test your wits (not to mention level, experience, equipment, and all that good stuff!). You'll be at a disadvantage without getting schooled on the bg basics, which is where we come in!

On the surface, it's purely a game of "capture the flag." Two flags, two bases, and your object is to bring the opponent's flag to your base three times (i.e. earn three points before your opponent does). One significant rule change from the traditional game is this: that you have to defend your flag in order to score a point. In order to score, your team must touch the opponents' flag to your flag in your home base.

  • The Official Site has a new devlog up. This time it's joramh's Revamping the Ship Guide.

One of my primary responsibilities at FLS is coordinating the introduction of these historical vessels into our game world. This can be a lengthy process when you consider that ships not only require the structure, but placement of the crew, the cannons, the sails, and ensuring damage is displayed accurately. Prior to coming to the Flying Lab team I had a life as a web developer, so naturally the revamped ship guide was a good fit for me to spearhead.

Go take a look at the rest of it. It's pretty interesting.

  • A hero defined...

Brokain tells the riveting story, about him defeating an entire legion of Orcs in the Clefts of Rujark. Stay on the edge of your seat, as he recounts how he saved his entire party from certain destruction...

“Exactly.” The man answered. “Without me they were doomed. We would’ve still been wandering the entrance halls looking for how to get deeper into the mines had I not realized that we needed to find this ‘Overseer’ gent. So I lead the group back to the lift and we went through the door next to it, obviously the overseer’s lair. It was dark and the walls seemed to close in on us as I took point, the monk in our group behind me as backup…but she really just wanted to enjoy the view, if you know what I mean.” The man winked and nudged one of the other two men, Hakim, with his elbow.

  • Looks like character transfer is the phrase of the day. If you want to move to Rexxar and you're on Suramar, Draenor, Feathermoon, or Windrunner, you need to get busy. The transfer will end on Thursday, February 16. That's tomorrow.

Click here to transfer your character.

Now, I'm happy for all of the people who get to transfer their characters to new realms to alleviate all of that clogging. However, I'd be extra happy if Blizzard could get off their duffs and fix the lag problem on Sen'jin which is a new server. It was unplayable last night and nobody wants to pay for a game that horks you off because you can't play it.
